Just kiddin’.
For those of you who haven’t visited chat because you don’t want to or know how to use a regular IRC client, Undernet now has a Java applet for Webchat.
Go to http://www.undernet.org/webchat.php and click “connect”. You will then be prompted to download and install the java applet. Choose a username. In the bottom window type /join #straightdope and that’s it.
Easy enough? I thought so. You’re welcome.
Someone will be along shortly to add the boilerplate info, I’m sure.
#StraightDope is not affiliated with blah blah blah…
One more thing. I’ve tested the java applet and the connection seems to work great.
When you’ve joined a channel, there is a slim window near the bottom where you can type. That is where you should type /join #straightdope.
If you are not connecting, try another server from the drop down menu on the first page. All those servers are Undernet servers and will allow you to connect to #straightdope.
Okay, so I tried this, and I have a question/problem.
I try to log in, and I get a “java.net.NoRouteToHostException:Host unreachable” error. It’s happened on about 4 different servers. Is this a problem with my machine? (Which would SUCK, since I need to talk to someone who’s only on IRC during the day…)
Please join us in chat. I will try not to creep you out (but no guarantees; just ask ValerieBlaise, tiggeril, porcupine, chique, Falcon, Sapphire Bullet, SeaDiver, Nymysys, etc.)
