What am I doing wrong? (SDMB Chatl)

Umm…so I thought about going to the SDMB chat and have a live journal account, etc. I get to the chat screen no problem but it tells me that I have to type “/join #your channel number” before it let’s me do anything. Huh?

Once you’re inside a chat program, to get to the straightdope chatroom you have to join it - that’s what that /j means. The chatroom you want is #straightdope. Any chatroom is preceeded by the # sign, then the name, no space, if you want to join other ones. So type:

/j #straightdope

Make sure the IRC chat server you are using is an undernet server (it will have Undernet.org as the last part of the address) otherwise you won’t find us!

Standard disclaimer: #straightdope and the people therein are not affiliated with the Straight Dope, Chicago Reader, Cecil Adams, erc. Talk to us at your own risk.

Were you trying to connect today? From teemingmillions? If so, you came in multiple times… at least a dozen or more, but you kept disconnecting.

I’d suggest downloading mIRC and then follow mnemosyne’s advice on how to join us. We’re mostly a nice group but watch out for Jessity. She bites.

http://www.undernet.org/webchat.php

Click there, click connect. Let it install the small applet needed to run.
Once you are connected an see people chatting type /join #straightdope to connect to the correct channel. The names on the right are the people in the channel. You start off in #newbie when you connect, so you need to move to #straightdope using the command above.

Aesiron, honey, you should know by now it’s not Jessity you need to be afraid of…

Thanks, you guys. I actually didn’t receive a notification that this had received any responses so I was busy hiding under my bed and feeling like a loser. I just wanted a little chat!

Actually, Jessity was very nice to me. She tried (in vain) to help. I could see who was in the room but couldn’t seem to see anything going on.

I’ll try again with the above advice.

[Slight hijack]
Using mIRC and undernet, I don’t see #straightdope. I wonder if this has something to do with my ISP.

#straightdope isn’t in the default channel list. To join, either add it to your channel list or type /join #straightdope in the status box. See you there!
