Straightdope wish list

Here’s a link to archived threads.

And I wouldn’t mind being able to search for “sex”, either.

To Hell with being able to search for “sex” I want to be able to have my searches for threads about a “death ray” not get cluttered with discussions of mortality. So, yeah, find some way to beef up the search feature to allow for three letter searches.

I’m not really interested in a sports forum, but I think that the sports fans should have it. If only to allow it to stop keeping me from spotting the threads I’m interested in actually reading in Cafe Society.

I’d like to see a pukey smiley. I agree with all the people complaining that emoticons are silly and childish. But there are times I like behaving that way.

I’d like to thank What Exit? for mentioning the change in display options. I’m looking forward to that. (Gonna be able to search through the U.S. History trivia thread more easily now!)

I would love a sports and games forum. First, it would allow for more Mafia games, and I’m all for more Mafia games. Second, I think sports threads are quite possibly the most threadshitted genre of thread on this entire board, and maybe that would be reduced if they were taken out of Gen Pop, as it were.

Though I’ve no interest in them, I too would like to see a sports and games forum. I like the idea of avatars (that one could turn off) which are non animated.

In which case I amend my wish to the link button automatically putting selected text in the “text to be displayed” pop up.

I hate it when posters simply write “Couldn’t agree more” and then leave it at that, but this is one of those times for me. Hostile Dialect said it perfectly.

Of course, the performance could be a bit better, but other than that, leave more than well enough alone. Have your avatars if necessary, as long as I can turn them off.

Well said, HD. Except the bit about the Sports and Games Forum. That we really need. The rest I like just as is.

That is cool–only problem being I can’t tell from the threads list whether it’s a manageable what-was-a-two-pager or a less manageable what-was-a-four-pager.

I don’t think I’ve ever wandered into a sports thread and I don’t ever recall seeing so many of them cluttering up CS I can’t find something to read. I’d say give reality shows their own forum before making a sports forum. A sports forum would get less traffic than Comments on Staff Reports.

Faster Searches

Three letter searches

I am not into sigs, avatars or smilies but more opportunities to have titles aside from Member and Charter Member.

Yeah, I switched back immediately to 50 – I’m too used to it.

No. On vBulletin, “archives” are the low-bandwidth, search engine-friendly version of the board. They don’t include any more accessible messages than on the full version of the site.

non-animated avatars that we could turn off

searches to include three letter words

searches to include older threads

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but I’d like the ability to click on my User Control Panel, click on View all Subscribed Threads and then conduct a search within only those threads I’m subscribed to. Not threads started by me, nor posts made by me. Just within those threads to which I’m subscribed.

Sigs & avatars are fine with me as long as I can turn them off. Smilies are a fact of informal online communication life. It doesn’t matter how eloquent you are, sometimes people need to know you’re smiling when you say that. Barf smilie? Has anyone in the history of this message board actually ever barfed as a consequence of something someone posted? I don’t think so.

Rather than a sports forum, I wouldn’t mind a forum where pics are allowed. In fact, it would be nice if I could turn on avatars, sigs & pictures for one forum only, preferably the picture forum.

While we’re creating new forums, let’s activate the children’s forum, and make that the SFW forum as well, and do away with this silly three-click rule about NSFW in all other forums. If you work someplace that prudish, stay off the fucking internet.

Yes, I said “fucking.” Ooh, hope I didn’t just get you fired, Sister Mary.

Just to repeat, if avatars are activated, the switch is built in to turn them off in our user profiles. So while I don’t really want them, I would not mind them.

That would be cool. It would save the server some overhead I would think.

If we can turn them off, why do you need them to be non-animated?

The reason I ask is because I do not want avatars, even though we can turn them off, and for the life of me, I can’t figure out why. Why should I oppose them if I can turn them off?

Can I wish James Randi, Michael Shermer, Martin Gardner and Buzz Aldrin were members here?

Also, I would like to ride the pony.

I can help make the avatars if they get passed through. This would be mine:

There are a lot of sports threads I don’t start simply because people can be snotty about both sports and too many threads on any one topic.
