Strange New Worlds season 2 to start June 15, 2023

HA! (And more characters to appease Discourse.)

So does the presence of Boimler and Mariner in Strange New Worlds imply a time travel episode?

Absolutely -

I figured it was ‘Hulk Serum’…

My bigger issue was that the Klingons were nerfed in this episode - not because amped up M’Benga or Chapel could fight them - but because of the first one:

I know the federation rules against torture!
gets punched
Ok - I’ll tell you everything!

And even outside of that - I fully enjoyed the episode. Can’t wait to see Pike have a little talk with Spock:

So, you’re telling me - I was gone for an entire 5 minutes before you stole the ship?

I mean, they can’t all be badasses. Remember Alexander?

A Klingon in the original series gave up when a tribble was brought near him.

Klingons talk a good game, but some of them are just not that tough.

He was only 3/4 Klingon, I guess he was 1/4 wimp.

I would not be surprised if that was the exact line word-for-word.

I’m just struck by how much Carol Kane’s character reminds me of my bubbie may her memory be a blessing.

I love Carol Kane as the chief engineer. She should be a hoot. Good addition to the cast, and it’s great to see her getting the work.

Fun episode. Carol Kane is great, but I still hold out a slim hope that Hemmer is still alive and will be rescued this season.

So you are saying you are part Lanthanite?

From what I have heard, Hemmer is not coming back. But the actor IS coming back as another member of the species, so he’ll probably be the same basic character.

The show runners said they planned for his death before the character became so popular. He was basically supposed to be a red shirt, but he was so good he got more and more screen time, and now they wish they hadn’t killed him. So they are bringing him back in a way that doesn’t break the show.

There’s a very Star Trekkie way they could have brought Hemmer back, though: His species maintains clone backups, with downloaded memory backups. They are a species of engineers, after all. They could have said that Hemmer’s last backup was before he joined Starfleet, so you could basically reset Hemmer back to where he was at the beginning of the series.

I read all that already - producers often lie about that kind of thing (to maintain surprise), and I think there’s an even easier way to bring him back if the producers want to - just have him survive and call for help. The deep snow cushioned his landing, he’s adapted for cold, and the temperature kept the Gorn from hatching and killing him. We didn’t see him die, and in Star Trek much stranger things have happened.

But who knows.

Don’t do that to me. He was my favorite character and I can’t afford to have false hope to see him again.

RIP you beautiful blind grump.

I thought it was more of that experimental cosmetic serum from last season and they were going to pretend to be Klingon.

I would like the ship to go…now. So funny, so very funny.

That’s the moment borrowed from Lower Decks I mentioned. The captain was wandering around trying to think up her catch phrase:

Captain Carol Freeman: I’ve really got to think of something cool to say when we’re going to warp… something like, “it’s warp time.” What do you think of that? Was that good for you?

Remind me: what was Kirk’s line?

The catchphrase is a more modern thing.

I don’t believe he had one. He said a few different things.
