Here, there’s no need to be civil towards the modern day gestapo. No amount of education will cure them of their irrational hatred of people who have done them zero harm and have essentially no history of harming or oppressing anyone, no amount of reasoning would move them into a position of sanity. While it’s obviously not certain, it seems likely to be related. Of course they risked harming some of the very people they think they’re protecting, but we can’t assume a lot of intelligence or thoughtfulness is involved.

A bit of good news from the homefront; the group behind an anti-transgender referendum here in Washington has failed to collect the approx. 250,000 petition signatures they needed to get the initiative on the November ballot.
It really boggles the mind that the people behind this campaign thought that one of the most trans-friendly states in the Union (the nondiscrimination law has actually been on the books for ten years now, a state where the largest city’s mayor is a married gay man, and where the locals generally have an attitude of minding their own business and not bothering others if they aren’t bothering you, would go in for their hateful nonsense.

At the same time, there’s something revelatory about this. It turns out, and I hope you’re sitting down for this, that transgender people can still be arrested for inappropriate activity in gendered locations. Holy shit, dude! It turns out that we don’t need additional laws after all!
Yeah, that’s weird. Why didn’t she just say “I’m transgendered, I’m allowed to take photos of people in changing rooms without their consent!” :rolleyes:

That’s not what anti-transgender people are going to think, though. They’re going to point at Target’s trans-friendly policies and say “see what happens when we treat the transgenders like people?!” Even the linked news article suggests that the incident was a consequence of Target’s new policy.
Though it probably was. If the suspect actually committed the crime, they’re probably a cis male who claimed to be trans in a moronic attempt to get out of trouble. Or some asshole trying to show everyone why Target’s policy is a bad idea.
The article said he already identified as a female including a female version of his birth name.
Though I have no idea how that was determined. Unless he has ID in that name.
There are several things we don’t know:
- Is this person sincerely trans, or is this person trying to find a loophole in law/policy?
- Did this person actually engage in illegal behavior? (It’s been alleged, but we don’t know all the facts).
Here’s what we do know:
3) Target’s trans-inclusive policy presented no impediment to arresting someone for alleged inappropriate behavior.
For 1 and 2, we should wait to get the facts. For 3, we already see confirmation that trans-friendly policies don’t leave women unprotected from pervs.
Pretty sure that was sarcasm, in that that’s exactly what the anti-trans people think, or at least pretend to think, is what happens when transgender bathroom rights are acknowledged; men are going to hang out in ladies’ rooms for the sole purpose of committing perversions, will tell any authority figure who questions them that “I identify as a woman right now so I have a right to be here”, and said authorities will shrug helplessly and allow the perversions to continue.
I.e. the “I’d have done that all the time when I was in high school!” assertation.
