Stupid liberal idea of the day

Me? No, my thought was that if one’s property taxes are too high, sell the house and look for a new property, that even with newly assessed property taxes fits one’s budget. mhendo made the point that at the time of sale in cali, property taxes are reassessed which confused me because I was thinking primarily in terms of house 1, the one being left behind. Why would you care if those taxes went up if you’re no longer on the hook for them? But he was thinking about house 2, the one being moved into.

Don’t you owe curlcoat an apology, then?

But wouldn’t that be the primary concern of the person who’s actually moving house?

Say i bought a house for $150,000 in 1990, and that house is now worth 600,000. That’s not an unrealistic scenario in many parts of California.

And say i get a new job, and need to move house. I decide that, because my own house will sell for $600,000, and because i don’t want to be saddled with a larger mortgage, i will look for a new house that also costs about $600,000.

But in making that move, i am now on the hook for property taxes based on a $600,000 value, rather than my previous situation where my property taxes were assessed based on my $150,000 purchase price. With the 1% cap on California property taxes, that raises my annual property tax liability from $1,500 to $6,000. That’s not insignificant.

I should add, by the way, that while i’ve been critical of California’s property tax system, and of the proposition that created it, i don’t think that the rates themselves are too high. The problem for me is more one of equity. Just because you haven’t moved house for 20 years doesn’t mean that you deserve to pay one-quarter the property taxes of your neighbor who moved in last month.

For what?

I would expect someone who’s concerned about their property tax responsibility to look for a property that would result in the property tax they’re willing to pay.

Saying “fuck you” to other posters is a violation of the Pit’s language restrictions. Please avoid doing this in the future.

No warning issued.

If I may, I think mhendo may be saying that those who have owned the house for 20 years may be paying too little. 2 people on the same block with houses of the same value should pretty much pay the same property tax.

Now you’re just begin obtuse.

It is possible both to be concerned about your property tax rate, on the one hand, but to also recognize, on the other, that the only way to reduce your rate would involve moving into a substantially smaller and less desirable house.

I feel rather awkward defending curlcoat here, because her arguments in this thread are about as stupid and self-serving and hypocritical as her arguments in most threads related to politics, but it seems to me that simply telling someone who complains about property taxes that they should move, without taking all the other factors into account, is a rather pointless way of responding to the concern.

Would you say it’s pointless on the level of telling someone with no healthcare that they should get a better job or telling someone living below the poverty line that they should work more hours?

Yes, i would agree that it’s in the same ballpark.

If your point is one of equivalence, i suggest that all of us might benefit from holding ourselves up to higher standards than curlcoat subscribes to.

What do you mean by that?

You’re pulling my chain now, right?

No, I don’t feel that I’ve lowered my standards at all and am confused as to why you feel I have.

Because it’s already been explained to you - and you agreed - that buying a cheaper house means her property taxes will go up, not down.

Property taxes were Milton Friedman’s favourite type. I don’t think curlcoat has any friends in the world. :frowning:

At first I thought this was a Stupid Liberal Idea but on consideration it’s a reasonable idea stupidly presented:

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY): That laundry detergent looks yummy.

It seemed stupid in that Schumer himself was tempted to eat one (“I don’t know why they make them look so delicious”). It seems less stupid because forty kids in New York alone were also tempted and did, which suggests that it’s a real issue to be addressed. I’m not yet convinced that this was the right medium for this campaign, however.

How about another shout-out to the liberal media? MSNBC in particular:

MSNBC Caught Doctoring Clip From Romney/Ryan Rally

Well, bless his heart, he just doesn’t know any better. Lives in Houston, voluntarily, it appears. Not sentenced to live there, or anything. Attitude of Oakland, climate of Calcutta.

At any rate, we are always grateful for any link to TownHall, who’s non-partisan commitment to plain truth is the stuff of legend. But doctoring? Where, how, what? The clip is entirely seamless, there are no jumps or jerks. The only thing that differs is one’s interpretation of the crowd’s chanting. Is it not possible that the crowd is disorganized, discontinuous, with one group shouting one thing and one group shouting another?

Pray tell, where is this “doctoring”? You been had, son. Again.

The folks in the townhall website link you have provided seem to think that the crowd is calling “Romney, Romney” and he then graciously corrects them to include his running mate.

I did not hear this.

Sorry. I listened carefully to the raw CSPAN footage, and I thought the crowd was clearly calling “Ryan, Ryan, Ryan!”. Romney then tries to get them to call his name as well, and is greeted with resounding silence. This is how many, many, many others have heard it too.

Just because some biased radio personalities hear it a different way means squat.

MSNBC did not “doctor” anything. This is a crock.

I just watched the video one the article you linked to. Is this a joke?

As soon as these blaze people get to the part where supposedly the crowd is chanting Romney Ryan so enthusiastically, THE ANNOUNCERS GO APESHIT and talk over the video so I can’t even hear what they’re supposedly talking about?

Besides which the point of the video was how awkwardly Mitt looked trying to get the crowd to say Romney/Ryan, how long it took for the crowd to care, and how lame and unenthusiastic the few people who bothered to say it were.

Face it bud, no one cares about Mittens.
