Stupid OSX Question

Because of a change in the way we’ve got our computers set up, I just started connecting to the internet on my main desktop directly via PPPoE instead of via our network.

Is there some way to disable the “Do you want to stay connected to the Internet?” dialogue box which pops up every half hour or so? It’s really quite irritating, and since I have DSL, there’s no reason why my connection shouldn’t or couldn’t be open 24/7.

It’s also really irritating and I’m afraid that if I have my head turned for a couple of minutes that I’m going to miss the threshhold for responding and my 'net connection will be terminated automatically, then I’ll turn back to do something and end up losing a document or SDMB post or something.

Help?

click on the ‘network’ pane in the system preferences…

you will see a list of availible connections, select the appropriate one (built-in ethernet, i assume)…

click on PPPoE from the availible network protocols, as i assume that you have selected this active already…

there is a button called ‘PPPoE Options’, click on it and you will see the list of options that includes one that says ‘prompt every _ minutes to maintain connection’…uncheck that option…

i am using Panther (10.3), but i would assume some slight variation of the above instructions for the previous versions of OSX…i highly recommend upgrading if you haven’t already…

I don’t have an Options button in my PPPoE window and I’m using Panther. My guess was that she had the, now redundant, internal modem box in her network port configurations still checked and that was the source of the prompt. TeaElle, if you just hit cancel or no in that dialogue box, do you lose your connection? If not, then it’s unrelated to your ethernet and is originating from the modem software.
