I’d like to know what makes you think it could be the former rather then the latter. To me it just screams fake. It just seems designed to push as many RW buttons as possible.
Yeah, that’s not a serious thing.
I thought the bigger giveaway would probably have been “LGBTQQI2SAA”, which I’m not convinced has ever actually been a thing said in earnest. Not a great troll, but mildly amusing. I probably would have found a way to mix in furries and otherkin as well for bigger results.
There were three options, you know. ![]()
Why could it be real? Because the world is filled with actual nutjobs. Poe’s Law is in full force these days.
I agree it’s almost certainly fake. The next question is: is it a left-winger or a right-winger pushing RW buttons?
Or neither? Some people just want to watch the world burn.

Perhaps you should check before sharing, or is adding to the general normalization of mendacity your aim? You’re just making yourself and your pals look like liars.
FYI: your own link is now updated to say that it was indeed a false flag operation including an admission of responsibility by those who perpetrated it.
If was a douchey troll primarily looking for people to get worked up over a fake nonsensical story. I’d choose one that would appeal to the base instincts of the RW crowd, especially one that plays into the narrative of good conservative folk being persecuted by those nasty, nasty “SJWs”.
There are BS stories out there designed to push LW buttons, but for whatever reason they don’t gain nearly as much traction.
(Oh, and this BS story popped up in my Facebook feed as if to illustrate my point!)
ETA: saw Buck Godot’s post after posting. Looks like RW trolls, trying to show how “far the left has gone”. My brain hurts trying to figure out how making up an absurdly fake story achieves that. Seems like every troll caught IRL has a higher aspiration then simply being a douche…
“UPDATE: A group of self-proclaimed military veterans has taken responsibility for the flyer, saying it was intended to reveal “how far the left has gone.””
I always love when the right has to make shit up to make claims about how far gone they think the left is.
Because if we were even a fraction as ‘gone’ as the right, they wouldn’t need to make shit up. It would be out there for everyone to see and there’d be no denying it.
To provide some anecdotal support for your claim, some douchenozzle wrote a tell-all book called Trust Me, I’m Lying, about his lucrative career inventing fake news for various media sources. (I sampled it but couldn’t justify giving him money.) In the book he said he tried to invent fake news for liberals, but they didn’t bite. He could only make money pissing off conservatives.
I have no idea what his own political leanings are. Some derivation of “asshole.”
Veterans??? When I was I college (on the GI Bill) we would have ridiculed those assholes right out the door. We didn’t need “help” like that. In fact, we got along quite well with everyone. Maybe because we didn’t have shit stirring trolls “helping” us? I wonder, was this a group of real veterans, or some bunch of “stolen honor” assholes.
Was actually my first thought as well.
“Three people, using the names of Terry Steinawitz, JaMarcus Tsmubue and Phillip Witol”
Well, as other articles point out, the first name is made up as no one was able to find any evidence of such a person. The others appear to be fraudulent as well.
So three cowards who won’t use their real names attempted to smear the left as anti-veteran and as usual, the right took the bait.
Brian:
Excuse me. Are you the Judean People’s Front?
Reg:
F*** off! We’re the People’s Front of Judea!
Monty Python FTW!
Well, that’s just gotta be legit!
Bolding mine.
Found the second dog whistle. Ooh, an “urban” name! Scary!
What the heck kind of name is “Steinawitz”, anyway? Sounds like that last syllables of typically Jewish names melded together in a awkward and unnatural way. Horowitz and Bernstein, sorta. Sort of like the “urban” name, its produced on a stereotypewriter but doesn’t actually ring “true”.
“Stein” appears to be German for “stone”; some online translator renders “witz” as “joke”. Make of that what you will.
All three surnames are made up and generate no hits other than this story.
Its no coincidence that one sounds very Jewish and another vaguely African.
wit·tol (wĭt′l)
n. Archaic
A man who knows of and tolerates his wife’s infidelity.
[Middle English wetewold : weten, to know (from Old English witan; see wit2) + (coke)wold, cuckold; see cuckold.]
Nothing.
I assume Witz is a germanisation of the common slavic name endings, like aćs and ić.
