Stupid Social Justice Warrior Bullshit O' the Day.

I hope he nails them to the wall. I was thoroughly impressed by his interview on the Reuben Report. He struck me as a very reasonable, thought-provoking individual with a sincere commitment to intellectual rigor. The administration’s actions against him and their failure to protect his rights were nothing less than egregious.

Interestingly, I’m pretty sure if there was a “Right Wing Nutjob Bullshit O’The Day” thread, the non-lefty SDMB posters wouldn’t be trying to shut down the conversation in, telling people they’re making shit up, or belittling them the way some folks are carrying on here.

I’d suggest the response is far more likely to be “Yup, that person sure is being a dickhead” in most cases not involving actual violence or realistic threats thereof.

Not so much. If this had been the only thing, I wouldn’t have minded the doctor being a woman. But by the last season at least the "in your face"SJW content had been rising by the episode.

What tore it for me was an episode set in 1800’s London and half the population was portrayed as being black or Asian. When his companion commented on that she didn’t know there were so many coloured people in Londen back then, the Doctor replied “Yes well, history has been whitewashed.”

That’s when I turned it off.

Ah. I’ve missed the last two seasons, so I can’t speak to that specifically.

I do recall wanting to punch Moffat in the face for his ham-fisted attempt to address the abortion debate in Kill the Moon. If you can’t say something intelligent about a social issue, it’s better not to say anything at all.

When Moffat’s female companions aren’t being insufferable bitches to their boyfriends, they are floundering around helplessly in the absence of the doctor. But Clara’s utter paralysis in Kill the Moon was bad even for the series. The whole thing left such a bad taste in my mouth that I lost interest after that. I do hope to catch up soon and maybe recapture a bit of the old passion.

We have a ton of threads along that line and they feature plenty of conservative bitching.

I’m more annoyed about having my motivations impugned when I am in fact a liberal myself.

I’m guessing you have doorhinge, Clothahump, Shodan and a few others on Ignore if you’re not seeing non-lefty SDMB posters trying to shut down the conversation, telling people they’re making shit up, or belittling them in any Trump- or other right-wing-politician-related thread. Because it totally happens.

While Doctor Who presents a very sanitised and silly version of history, 1) “half” is hyperbolic and 2) there were, in fact, a lot more coloured people in Victorian London than is commonly believed now and the reason for that common belief could reasonably be described as “whitewashing history”. Pretty weak tea.

“Kill The Moon” was horrible, though, and not just for the abortion message.

You’re just saying that because of your agenda…

I have the first two on ignore, but I can vouch for the fact that Shodan is very quick to dismiss anything coming from the left as being untrue, unfounded, anecdotal, etc.

I feel that the critics are giving this thread way more significance than it actually has.

Like people who attacked the Trolls R Us Thread because ‘‘You’re just looking for things to bitch about!’’

Yes. It’s coffee table bullshit. Attacking either of the threads is like barging into Starbucks and interrupting a conversation to scream, ''THINK ABOUT THE MESSAGE YOU’RE SENDING!!!"

HOW DARE YOU SPEND TIME TALKING ABOUT WHAT YOU HAD FOR DINNER LAST NIGHT!!

Gosh, think of all the productive things we wouldn’t be doing anyway if we weren’t wasting time talking about trivialities for a little fun.

When I quit Facebook to ‘‘focus on more important things,’’ I became infinitely more creative about how to waste time on stupid bullshit.

Kill the Moon was written by Peter Harness.
Don’t know if that exonerates Moffat somewhat…

Not really.

For the most part, I think the show is brilliant. I honestly don’t mind being entertained by bloviating asshats as long as their biases aren’t glaringly obvious in their filmmaking (or writing.) Moffat’s narrative failures are, for the most part, subtle. I think there are important things to be said about social justice issues, and probably science fiction is a great place to say it, but instead of a ham-fisted, ‘‘things are so whitewashed’’ comment, try running more historical episodes that feature people of color? There are ways to say things without clubbing people over the head with them.

It was the thing that annoyed me most about Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle. He created a bunch of beautiful characters whose dire day to day circumstances richly illustrated class-based oppression during the early 1900s, and then he sacrificed his protagonist on the altar of rambling socialist theory. The final 20% of the book is basically an academic lecture.

Kill the Moon was one of the worst episodes ever–until they made the episode where it turns out that the little crusts that form in the corners of your eyes when you sleep are really parasites, and sometimes they decide to take over and convert your body entirely into eye-snot. Kill the Moon had to move over for that.

Eh - it was a clever idea poorly executed and the twist at the end was good. KtM was a stupid idea poorly executed and the twist at the end was stupid.

Doctor Who has long been used as a soapbox for various writers’ personal crusades. As long as the story is good, I try not to let it bother me.

I guess my point is, if you are often reminded it’s a personal crusade, it’s maybe not such a good story. I can think of a few stories I would give a pass, but not many.

I’m a writer. Writers have the enormous privilege of shaping an audience’s worldview by showing them reality through the eyes of another person. I’m sure that we all, in one way or another, have an agenda. But we also have a responsibility to be not just intellectually honest but creatively honest in our work. That often means betraying our ideologies for the sake of truth.

Now that I’ve said that, I’m just sitting here wondering to what extent I’ve failed to live up to that standard.

I generally stay out of threads about your president or politicians.

I don’t think it was the librul lefty loonies who showed up WITH A GUN to “self-investigate” Pizzagate. Just for starters.

Can’t say I blame you there.

So, you hang with Americans for culture?
