[I searched this forum for ‘Lion King’ references, but didn’t see this anywhere.]
Our kids are just starting to watch films like ‘Lion King’ and such. I’ve tried to find those alleged obscure hidden ‘adult’ jokes and subliminals in the film, but maybe I just can’t bring myself to concentrate enough to catch them. I know for many years, animators have been playing games with their work. The 'net is rife with sites on this sort of thing; honestly, I simply don’t have the patience to sift through all the B/S. So, my question to all you fine Dopers:
Have any of you caught any of these hidden references in kids films? Lion King, or otherwise? Or is it just another myth?
Thanks for any info…
Myth. The only one in the Lion King was the letters SFX in a shot where some dust is kicked up by Simba. This was added in by the Special Effects dept of Disney Animation (the group responsible for dust and rain and clouds, and other effects like that). Unfortunately, because it was such a vague hint of the letters, it looked like SEX.
They have since obscured that little in-joke in the recent DVD release.

Thanks G/L. Fast and efficient are ye. Didn’t think this qualified as an urban legend or I woulda checked there first.
It’s not quite a kids 'toon, but the Beavis and Butthead movie was said to have some subliminal stuff. When I watched I only noticed one, but I wasn’t much into it, so…
The one I saw was when they were at Hoover Dam, they did a kind of ariel (sp?) view, and the Dam and it’s workings were a pretty good replica of your average diagram of the female reproductive system. I don’t think it was an accident.
This was addressed in Cecil’s mailbag
None of this has anything to do with subliminal message. What AveDementia cites is just a visual joke. The whole idea of SUBliminal message is that you don’t see them. So if you see it - whether ‘it’ is a thing in the dust in The Lion King, a castle in The Little Mermaid, or anything else - it’s not a subliminal message. How that phrase became interchangeable with a subtle joke is beyond me.
A few years ago Disney had to pull VHS copies of “The Rescuers” off shelves because of an adult visual image.
IIRC, there was a brief shot of a topless woman that apears in the background of one of the scenes.
