I like the “Ask The…” threads; I want to see more of them. I thought about it and I came up with a list of people and occupations that I would like Dopers to tell us about first hand. Feel free to add your own…
Ask the:
Artist
Scuba diver
Skiier
Pro Football Player
Pro Baseball Player (any spring training blogs?)
Actor
Burglar
Cop
Plumber
War Vet (WWII through Iraqi Freedom)
Astronaut
Navy Seal
F/X Technician
Nuclear plant worker
Politican
Rocket Scientist
Little Person
Giant
Judge
Biker
Cyclist
Construction worker
Spy
I can think of a bunch more. Dopers, If you are or know anyone who fit any of these categories, I’d sure like to hear youe stories.
I thought about that; finally I figured that since I was more or less asking people to post that GQ was the place to ask. Mods, If I’m wrong, feel free to move.
“ASk the X” threads generally go in IMHO, unless it’s something that’s bound to turn into a debate, in which case GD is the place. “Asking for Ask the X threads” threads can go in IMHO too.
Well, I can do “ask the (former) law clerk to a federal judge.” You get to ghostwrite some of the opinions and in many ways be almost a de facto assistant judge. Doesn’t have quite the same ring, though.
There are a number of artists here on the SDMB, but there are a ton of different media that we work in. The now-defunct Teemings magazine (no linkie because it’s gone, per Eutychus) used to have photos of some of the board’s artists’ work. If there’s a particular type of art you’re interested in and you specified, I’m pretty sure you’d get some decent answers.
(I work in polymer clay and design jewelry, plus I test craft products for manufacturers, so if there’s anything in that you want to know about, just ask!)
Well, I could do an Ask the Semi-pro Football Player thread, but unfortunately my SDMB time is rather limited at the moment. Maybe in couple of months…
Well, I contributed a bit to the “Ask the Waiter” thread, but I don’t know if I’m your typical waiter. I could start “Ask the (former) General Manager of a Restaurant/Bar”, but I dunno if that would be remarkably different from the Waiter thread. “Ask the guy who knows pretty much everything about Tears For Fears and Radiohead music” would get a response from Anastasaeon and probably a smartass remark from Freejooky or Ilsa_Lund, and not much else…but hey, if I hang around on a messageboard with a bunch of philistines, who am I to say anything about it?
How about “Ask the guy with a dozen latent psychoses, half of which are genetic while the other half are willingly self-created and perpetuated, that occupy various levels of his mind while he watches them to see what they do and how they affect his thought patterns”? You’ll get lots of great and (extremely) detailed insights into things that don’t make sense to anyone other than me, plus I’ll convince even more people that I’m either talking out of my ass, crazy, or an idiot! Fun for the whole family! How 'bout it?
[sub]…no, huh?[/sub]
Anyhow, I’d like to see “Ask the…”
College Philosophy Professor
Martial Arts Expert
Authoritarian
Professional Musician
Murderer (not bloody likely to happen here, but hypothetically it’d be quite interesting)
United States Copyright Lawyer (might help to clear up a lot of board issues)
Practicing Satanist
Ideally, I’d like to see all of these at once. THAT would be an interesting few days.
