I’m trying to eat protein every morning, but am getting tired of eggs and peanut butter. Any tasty suggestions for getting protein with my breakfast?
Meat, fish and cheese have protein. Wheat germ is good too. nuts and other nut butters have protein. Yoghurt and milk.
-Pickled herring or smoked salmon
-Handful of almonds or peanuts (watch serving size)
-Cold chicken or other leftovers
I use breakfast as an excuse to indulge my fondness for good cheese. I also like smoked salmon on a bagel.
I fry up a pound of bacon on Sunday night and put it in a tupperware container. Each morning, I microwave 2 or 3 pieces to have with my eggs.
Some oatmeals and cold cereals have added protein. Wheat Chex has 5g per serving.
You could buy a can of protein powder and make smoothies. Or high-protein bread/muffins or pancakes. Tons of recipes out there. Check out Low Carb recipe sites.
Are you a guy?
All you really need is a frying pan.
Sorry, you know someone was going to do it. May as well have been me.
Cottage cheese has a remarkable amount of protein in it per serving - it has about 15 grams per serving, while an egg has just over 6. If you don’t mind cottage cheese, I’d say give that a try.
Cottage cheese on whole wheat toast. sprinkle with sesame seeds. Can add some fruit slices.
Also, a soy smoothie is good. Just fruit and soy milk and if not adverse to artificial sweetners, a little Splenda.
I’m not a big breakfast person, so I usually just slam down a whey protein shake. Works for me. Sometimes I barely have enough appetite for that.
If you want to get creative, you can always toss a scoop of whey powder in your pancake mix.
One of the lines of Slim Fast drinks has 22 grams of protein.
Special K has a low carb/ high protein version of their cereal now.
The protein to calorie ratio and protein to carb ratio is quite good for a cereal. Additionally, of the carbs it does have, there are very few simple sugars (cheap carbs).
Each 30g serving provides 10g protein, 14g carbs and 3g of fat.
Sausage, ham, and bacon.
Hummus ?
And Spam!
Total Protein isn’t too bad either. I can’t remember the exact breakdown but it is comparable.
There are also high protein nutrition bars. Depending on your desired level of carbs, the Balance and Zone bars are good in protein for the price at around 12g per bar. Genisoy Low-Carb Crunch is probably the least disgusting true Low-Carb meal bar though.
I don’t really endorse eating these kinds of bars in place of a breakfast of real food, but for some variety or in emergencies, they are convenient.
I like a chicken sandwich on whole wheat.
I don’t care for ‘breakfast’ foods-dDon’t like eggs and lots of other breakfast foods are too sweet for early eating.
If you are a guy, I wouldn’t recommend anything with soy proteins in it. My trainer told me that soy is alright for the ladies, becuase it contains natual plant estrogens, but it doesn’t do good things for a man. If you are a guy, stick to whey proteins. I think that they are easier to mix, IMHO.
I don’t know if the trainer is full of it, but it made sense to me.
