And hell, the pool of potential clients for divorce lawyers just got a boost in the arm.
relentless
One article I read said they have three weeks to ask the court to reconsider. It’s probably a long shot though. In my state it said the county clerks are going to wait for guidance from the state officials. The governor has already issued a statement that it is now the law and they will follow it.
Good. The purulent un-convicted felon we have for an AG was spewing from his festering gob yesterday.
Let’s hope he STFU today.
Best part of this: NOBODY’s existing marriage is in any way abridged, diminshed, demeaned. Those believers in a Sacramental Holy Matrimony have in no way had that Gift of Grace hindered.
This means that a specific form of civil recognition granted by the state, has to be granted to competent adult humans regardless of gender identity. Very simple.
However, recognition of SSM is very much an early-21st century phenomenon, so the joke kind of falls flat.
Talk is cheap for candidates who know they can’t do it themselves. Good luck getting a two thirds majority of both Houses of Congress today…
…after which, passage of such an amendment would require ratification by 38 states. Although as of yesterday, only 11 states had approved marriage equality by direct popular vote or explicit state legislation (leaving 39 theoretically in play), some of the ones who had it approved by court ruling seem unlikely to join in ratifying an anti-SSM amendment at this point in the game.
With the Supreme Court neutralizing two of the Republicans’ biggest issues in the last two days, what issues are they going to complain about now? Too bad there was not a climate change case before the court now - we might have expected a trifecta or victories for thought and reason in just a few days.
The Supreme Court.
Seriously, I think this will be a big part of their campaigning in the presidential race, post-primary. There’s a chance it could help energize their base - the next president may well put 3 justices on the SCOTUS.
Reading the dissenting opinions and I came across this in Roberts’ piece:
“for those who believe in a government of laws, not men…”
WTF is that supposed to mean? We are a government, and a country, of people - not laws. Laws are made by people, decided by the people, passed by people. They don’t come into existence from a computer.
The way that Roe v. Wade neutralized abortion as an election issue? This is really a gift to them in electoral terms. Either issue going the other way would have made things more ambiguous.
My favorite comment of petulance so far was someone saying that Reagan’s legacy is now that he destroyed America by nominating Kennedy to the Supreme Court.
It’s just an old saying popular among lawyers about respect for the rule of law, it’s traced back to Aristotle and his folk:
Politics 3.16
That part was basically arguing against the idea of the wise king, instead advocating for laws above caprice, even if the man making the decision was just, intelligent, or whatever.
Nice proof-reading, Buzzfeed:
South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham said he will respect the Court’s decision, but said he was “ommitting myself to ensuring the protection of religious liberties of all Americans.”
Looks like Christie was the only sane one in the bunch.
God, this is already bringing out the ugly like never before.
Republicans: “Let’s pin our bigotry on our ‘religious freedoms,’ We’ll say it erodes the definition of marriage given to us by God. it’s practically bullet proof.”
Since when did religion own and patent the idea of marriage as a lifestyle? Especially under the the eyes of the U.S. Constitution.
Hell, they couldn’t achieve it in 2004, when public attitude was much less supportive of SSM than it is now.
For all his many faults, he is more sane than the rest. It’s a low bar, I know.
Apparently, the first SSM in Georgia took place in Fulton County within the last hour or so. In GEORGIA!! Wow. Never thought I’d see the day.
Right now, my three times divorced co-worker / right wing nut job is frothing in his cube reading the comments section on FoxNews. Three-times divorced, yeah, let’s not fuck with the sanctity of marriage there, bub.
Today was a good day.
I’m a little disappointed. The decision is nearly two hours old and there’s no video of that preacher in Texas setting himself on fire as promised. Also, I went down to the courthouse earlier today, and not one single gay man put a gun to my head and insisted we get married. No lesbians making out on the lawn. The planet appears to continue revolving. Divine wrath does not appear to be happening.
On the up side, my wife and I are just as married as we were last night. Looks like we’re staying that way.
Some are probably making the phone calls today. There’s already a pool of those who got married out of state and have been living where they couldn’t get divorced because their marriage wasn’t recognized (and couldn’t get divorced in their state of marriage because that required residency.) We’ll see the people lining up to get married because it’s associated with positive emotions. I’m most glad for those who risked, and will risk, greatly on love and fail.
I doubt there’s anybody lining up to watch the first same sex divorce case in their local family court though.
