For some strange reason, which may or may not have anything to do with the fact that this would be the only final on the first night other than the men’s 10,000m and it would give NBC something “big” to show on its first night of coverage (in the past, it would show swimming, but this now starts in the second week), somebody decided that all three rounds (four, if you include the preliminary round for athletes who didn’t make the qualifying standard but are their countries’ only female track & field competitors) of the women’s 100m would take place on the same day. Note that the men have their semi-finals and final the day after their first round.
Here is the schedule for potential women’s 100m and 200m runners, including relays:
Saturday 7/15, day session: 100m first round
Saturday 7/15, night session: 100m semi-finals & final
Monday 7/17, night session: mixed 4x100, both rounds (assuming USA does not, as is traditional for the Olympics, find new and innovative ways to drop the baton)
Wednesday 7/19, night session: 200m first round
Wednesday 7/20, day session: 200m repechage (the “second chance” round)
Friday 7/21, night session: 200m semi-finals & final
Sunday 7/23, night session: women’s 4x100 first round
Monday 7/24, night session: women’s 4x100 final
