Is it me or has Jeff gotten more forward over the years compared to the first Survivor, to the point where he can be kind of a jerk (especially in Tribal Council)? This seems to have occurred in Fear Factor as well - Joe used to just narrate, but now he’s got no problem just going off on some of the contestants (who usually deserve it). I wonder if this is done on purpose or if hosts just turn surly after a while.
It’s Darrah Johnson. And, actually, she has succeeded. In week 6, for the IC, when they had to drink those smoothies made of various items, it came down to Darrah and Sandra. Darrah ended up winning.
And, really, I don’t see why everyone is ganging up on Darrah when Tijuana is pretty much on par. Where’s the hate for Tijuana?
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Everytime he is on screen, I jump up, screaming obsenities at the television screen. He is just so ARROGANT!
And then I have to explain to my flatmates that, “Yes, he can hear me… he’s getting my VIBES!”
I did not understand how they came to the consensus that Darrah would be next to go.
It was a joke. Boomhauer is a character on King of the Hill. His speech is unintelligible.
Every year people say that’s it- they are never watching again, and every year most of them still do.
For me, it waswhen the worst winner ever- V won. What a disaster. Still, like veryone else, I came back. I think the Outcast twist both sucked and was unfair- but I am still watching.
And the strong have won. Remember Ethan, quite possibly the best player ever? Colby had the game in the palm of his hand until Tina fooled him into taking her, rather then the much disliked Keith.
Each year teaches a new lesson to the next generation of Survivor’s. Don’t let the strong physical threats go too far. Don’t let the overtly playing the religion card types fool you- they are still playing. Don’t reveal your alliances too early. Get rid of the well-liked coat-tail rider before the jury. Isolate and eliminate the “super schemers” as soon as you safely can.
Rupert fell victim to the Colby rule. Of all those remaining, Jon had the best shot at the $100,000. Burton probably has the best shot at the million. Lill is the least deserving player, but like last year, her lack of threat and easy gullibility will be exploited by those that are there to win.
elf6c, just for clarification on my feelings about not watching anymore, I’m not quitting because my favorite got voted out. Had the producers not brought back previously voted out contestants (with axes to grind) and Rupert was voted out because he was the next “strong” man eliminated after Sean and Burton because he was unable to secure his alliance’s loyaltly, I’d’ve been disappointed but not surprised and certainly not angry. But I’m angry about the twist in the game and the repercussions it’s had (and will apparently continue to have). Rupert did eliminate his strongest physical threats, only to have them brought back.
It would be impossible to have strategized for what should have been an entirely unlikely event such as this. Sure, it could be argued that contestants should be prepared for the unexpected, but that particular twist goes against the very rules of the game; to outlast your competitors.
I’ll be travelling on Wednesday, so I won’t be around to see it when it airs, but I have enough invested in this season to want to see the repercussions of Rupert’s ouster and the reveal of this “big lie” we’ve had dangled in our faces all season, that I’ll be taping it to see when I get back. After that, I absolutely couldn’t care less who wins this thing, as the outcome is so tainted by this Outcast thing.
And unless I hear that the producers have learned from their stupidity and will never, ever pull this stunt again, there’s not a chance in hell I’ll ever watch another regular season* of this show. I watch television to be entertained, and, to a degree, feel satisfied or rewarded somehow for having watched a program/series/movie, etc. This is 2 seasons in a row that I was not only dissatisfied with the experience, but I was downright angry. Once it’s not fun anymore, what’s the point?
[sup]*There’s a chance – a small one, but a chance, none-the-less – that I may tune in for the All-Star version, only because I’d like to see Rupert have another chance at this thing, if he’s actually in it, as is speculated due to his absence from the talk show circuit. But no more “regular” Survivor for me, with the caveat mentioned above.[/sup]
Shayna I know how you feel. I hated, hated, hated the Outcast gimmick. This has happened to me in the past- when V won I swore I would never watch this stupid show again. Also, remember Pascal’s purple rock? Again, a massively stupid move by Burnett. Still, the good usually outweighs the bad. And I always came back. Burton’s still in, and the idea of Jon facing the jury does fill me with amusement.
In regards to Rupert- he voted Shawn out after promising him they were ok. He kept Jon over Shawn and he kept Jon over Burton. Those mistakes came back to haunt him. He also alligned himself with the 2 weakest members of his tribe who were the least trustworthy- they have been scheming behind his back for weeks now- since the Trish debacle.
Rupert was not ever going to the jury. He was so concerned with winning every battle that he lost sight of the war. His pathetic last speech went along ways towards removing what respect I had for him after his tantrums as of late. Nobody likes losing, but for a counselor to act in such a manner is embarrasing.
You think Ryno liked getting voted out? Or how about Savage who instead of a tie was betrayed by the dim-witted, previously dumped for good reason Lill? And yet they comported themselves with 1000 times the dignity of Rupert. Maybe Rupert is just a creature of the editing and Burnett’s desire to have a good guy (Rupert) and bad guy (Jon) for us to root for and against. Heavens knows this has happened in the past.
In regards the the Allstar edition see my post on the previous page.
Yes, he kept the physically weaker Jon over the physically stronger Shawn & Burton – which is exactly as you admonish players to do. I don’t see that as a strategic error on his part.
Because the producers sprung a completely unexpected twist at him that he couldn’t possibly have forseen! Don’t you see how bringing back previously voted off contestants affects not only future scheming but how you alligned yourself in the past? Who the hell could be expected to be clarvoyant and plot against something they’d have no reason to expect?
I’ll spoiler my reply, just in case (though it’s been previously mentioned here without spoiler tags, I still think it’s spoilerish):
Jeff Probst is said to have admitted that several of the contestants lied to the cameras about their plotting in an effort to throw he and the producers off track. It is speculated (and so far what we’ve seen points to speculation being accurate) that those who lied were Sandra and Christa wrt Rupert.
We’ll simply have to agree to disagree about Rup’s parting words. I thought it was nothing more than an extension of the honesty he’s portrayed about the hurt he felt a the hands of macho men Shawn and Burton. I thought it was refreshing to see someone actually admit that they were hurt. I think he sets a fine example for the youth he counsels.
I think in the next Survivor, it will be Rupert vs. Hatch at the final.
Yes, no offense meant to anyone with a sthrn accent. We Nawtheners luv that.
I did say I like her, and hope she wins. I think she has this flying under the radar thing down pat. Being in the middle might get her to the end.
You’re not supposed to do that when there are two tribes, only when the merge has happened, or you’re damn sure you absolutely have to get rid of the stronger person.
Ethan was probably the nicest person to ever win the game, but in my opinion he was far from the best player. He was basically carried along by Tom and Lex and got lucky in the last episode.
But make sure you get the 1000 brown M&Ms or Ozzie won’t go on with the show.
Sanscour
I read today (forgot where–I was following link after link after link but I think it was usatoday.com) that two of the invitees to the All Star edition declined. Original reports had everyone accepting, so I wonder which two got cold feet? It also says that the top prize is still one million, but the runner up money starts higher. The first person voted out gets $25,000, up from $2,500 for regular Survivor. Considering what a ratings blockbuster this should be, I’m surprised they didn’t beef the grand prize up to $5 million.
OMG and the preview for this Wednesday looks awesome! I wonder what someone could possibly do to get stripped of immunity after winning it? My wife suggested cheating, but how?
I think theat Brian and Elizabeth are the Survivors that turned it down. Elizabeth has carved out quite a good post-Survivor career in entertainment TV - she’s going to be on the View, I think - just like Jeff Varner, who is now a correspondant for E! Brian has done everything he could to distance himself from Survivor, so he never gave it a moments’ consideration.
And I think they did beef up the prize to $5m.
The name I’m surprised I don’t see is Michael Sculpin - the post-toasty pig-killer.
I’m a little surprised at the folk who are so upset over the outcast, as tho it is inconsistent with the “rules” or the “spirit of the game.” Hell. The only spirit of the game is to mess with these folk for the viewers’ entertainment, and the only rules are whatever MB wants them to be. I’ve said it before - I think this change was a breath of fresh air into a series that was becoming overly formulaic.
If i have a complaint, it is with the success obtained by folks flying under the radar. V, Tina, Ethan, a whole bunch of folks left this time. My interest wanes near the end of the series, since I don’t give a shit about the remaining players one way or the other. Heck, at least I strongly dislike Jon.
I’m wondering if any two folk could prove themselves less well suited for their “professions” than Lill as a scout leader, and Rupert as a troubled teen counselor?
Interesting: Rupert was ‘unavailable’ for Letterman’s show. Either he couldn’t be bothered, or…
And yes, Elisabeth won the coveted seat on The View. She wasn’t my first choice though.
Nice he was, but he was also very strong in the challenges, and he was good at concealing it. Further, he found a way to succeed without making himself a target. Finally, he showed a deft hand at making the correct alliances and decisions. For those reasons, I think he was the “best” player.
Colby was the “strongest” player- but dumb as a box of rocks when it came to playing the mental aspects of the game. Heck he even has two rules named after him. One regarding knocking out the overwelming physcial threat before its too late, and the second regarding ditching the well liked tag-along teammate who never made any enemies and taking the jerk instead.
-
And already mentioned above- you ditch the threats after the merge. Not when the team game was still in doubt. That’s how they blew the lead, and their alliance blew the game. Rupert also talked about the importance of loyalty to Shawn to get his vote, but then broke his word to him the next show. Rupert knew Jon couldn’t be trusted, yet still picked Shawn over him because his feeling were hurt over his skirt. Rupert voted out the wrong people at the wrong time. They did not have numbers yet, and they let the other tribe back in the game.
-
Unexpected twist? There is a twist on every single series. In the minimun they had not done the tribe switcheroo either. Nor had the tiebraker been worked out. It still may be the stupid purple rock.
-
Rupert’s comments the last 3 weeks speak for themselves and I agree that we will have to disagree.
On the Allstar edition- the “noted schemers” like Hatch and a few others will get the boot first. I would like to see Lex get another shot. Colby too.
