Survivor 2/21 - (OPEN SPOILERS)

Since I can’t find a thread, I’ll start one.

I am sad that

Yau Man is gone. First time he was done in by Dreamz, this time by his own awesomeness.

Meh challenges this week IMHO, hell Chet helped.

Cirie came across as a real conniving bitch tonight. She thinks that being the swing votes gives her all the power, but it just makes her a major target. And her open warfare with Jonathan is not good, because her tribe mates are not going to want to listen to the constant bickering between the two. Perhaps she wouldn’t be making all these rookie mistakes if she had actually already been on he show. Oh, wait.

The nice thing about old friends is that you always know what to expect. Penner talks to much. Eliza rolls her eyes and flutters her lashes like a camel in a sandstorm. Cirie takes control (earlier than in her own season).

The Fans had better facepainting. Didn’t help them in the reward challenge, though. I still think Joel looks like the bastard offspring of an illicit affair between Lou Ferrigno and Pete Rose. Kathy’s going to know those Exile islands like the back of her hand if they keep this up.

I actually think Cirie did the right thing, as much as I’m going to miss the bootee. In an alliance consisting of her and the two couples, she has a chance at controlling things, because, let’s face it, none of those four are MENSA level intellects. Can you imagine her having as much influence on Penner, Yau Man, Ami and Eliza as she did tonight on the couples? Okay, maybe Eliza. But the amount of stroking she’d have to do to keep her in line would be exhausting…Eliza has the strategic profile of a rabbit with a gun: nervous as hell all the freakin’ time and ready to go off on anyone that looks at her funny.

What was with the votes? So much for Jonathan’s four person alliance.

Oh and loved Mike B referring to Chet as a girl. Classy, that one. Him and his fugly-ass tattoos.

Not liking the trend toward more spoiler boxes in the Survivor threads. I can only barely grasp the concept of opening an episode thread of any television show before watching the episode. I time-shift, which is equivalent to being on the West coast, and I’ve never once accidentally opened an episode thread before I watched it. That means the spoiler boxes are for people who intentionally open threads knowing they haven’t seen it yet.

I do some of this, because my time-shifting of scripted shows is extreme. I have over 50 hours of backlog at this point, having just tonight watched the shows that aired the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Some of the shows I watch, like Friday Night Lights, have only a single unified thread for the whole season, so for those I am actually opening threads that discuss episodes I haven’t yet seen. But when it comes to doing that, the very first thing I do is check the timestamps on all posts and identify how far in I can read without getting spoiled. Once the cutoff is known, only then do I start actually reading.

It just seems to me that if anyone is reading the thread after the show airs on the East coast – regardless of whether they live on the West coast or if they time-shift – the onus is completely on them to avoid spoilers. Expecting everyone else to keep you spoiler free is just plain rude.

Solid episode. That reward challenge kicked all kinds of ass both literally and figuratively, though I agree with the previous posters that the IC was kinda lame.

The crazy fan lady is starting to grow on me, though she doesn’t look long for the game. She hit the chopping-block trifecta: she’s annoying, she’s old on a young team, and she sucks at challenges. This would make her very strong in the late game, but this is still the early game. Then again, the fans are stupidly playing the late game strategy here in the early going, so she’s got a shot.

I would have liked Yau Man to stay around, but not at the expense of losing either Parvati or Eliza. It’s too bad Jonathan (“Penner”, apparently) wasn’t the one on the block, but his ticket may be up next TC anyway with his incessant whining. He’s such a friggin’ moron. I thought Cirie was quite clear: his arguments were exactly the same as the other alliance. What he’s missing is that the other alliance is two groups of two, which allows a fifth to worm in much easier than it would be to break into a true four-person alliance.

I would dearly love a final three of Cirie, Parvati and Amanda, and it looks to be quite possible. The second trickiest part would be voting out the first boyfriend during the final 5 TC, but I could see either Amanda or Parvati being easily convinced. The really tricky part, of course, would be the final 4 TC with Cirie, Amanda, Parvati and James/Ozzy. How do you not favor the guy in that immunity challenge? Well, the final 4 IC doesn’t usually favor strength or speed, but instead seems to focus on balance, so that would put James at a disadvantage. Since balance would favor Ozzy, he should be the first boyfriend booted. Thus Amanda gets to be the bad guy, now with more puppy-dog eyes. heh.

A couple weird things I noticed:

Why was Amy snuggling with Amanda while Jeff was bringing the votes back? Amy’s gay, right? Could Amanda be playing both sides of the flirt game? That would be too awesome for words. I could totally see Ozzy being used and discarded much like the anorexic chick did to the teenager with the weird name last season. I’m almost rooting for that now that I think about it.

Why did Eliza vote for Yau Man? And for that matter, why did Amy vote for Cirie? Was she swayed by Jonathan’s appeal to vote your conscience?

Finally, why do the favorites appear to have a huge dry cave while the fans only have the one-seater? Seems a bit unfair, no?

Oh crap, I missed it! Anyone care to spoil the whole thing for me? Especially the challenge…

Agreed on all counts about the spoiler boxes Ellis Dee, especially when the OP starts the thread after the show has aired so there can be no complaining about how there was already a discussion going. How much self control do you really need to simply not open a thread until after you’ve seen a show if you do not want to be spoiled?
The only reason I added a spoiler box in my post was because he wrote in the title “no spoilers” and I didn’t then want someone from the West Coast come in and start bitching about my post.

That didn’t look like snuggling to me, just an exhausted person resting her head on the person next to her. Besides, Amy’s not stupid enough to fall for anything like that.

The reward challenge was great. James took off like a shot whenever Amanda got flipped. I think the two couples alliance is stronger than just being two couples. I honestly think that’s a real 4 person alliance. Cirie was in a bad spot either way. If the 2 couples alliance is just that, then Cirie does have a better chance. However, I think I’d have gone with the other 4. Jonathan ruined that by his approach to Cirie. There’s a time to bully and a time to stroke. He didn’t choose wisely.

I’m still not sure why Ami voted Cirie. However, I am sure that I really like Ami’s boobs.

Reward challenge - each team got a catalog where they picked 3 items that would be their reward - Favorites picked kitchen stuff, shelter (tarp & rope) & something else, Fans picked fishing gear, shelter, & something else. They also get war paint, which is applied with varying levels of skill. Challenge was basically a rugby like game on a field about half the size of a football field, but knee deep in water. Each team started with 3 large sacks (about the size of a small pillow) full of something that didn’t get too heavy to carry when soaked (i.e. not sand). You had to get five of the 6 total bags into the other teams end zone to win, so it was necessary to steal sacks from the other team. There didn’t appear to be any rules beyond no hitting/kicking - people were tackling each other, picking up and throwing people, etc. It got down to the strongest of each team (James & Joel) holding sacks in end zone, while everyone else tried to steal the sacks. Favorites one when Penner (why does Jeff call him that all the time?) stole the 5th sack and ran it back to the other end zone - I’m guessing by that point everyone else was too exhausted to do anything about it.

Favorites get reward, send Kathy & Ami to Exile Island. Kathy makes no comments about never knowing a lesbian before. Kathy also bails on redoing all the clues, since she doesn’t want to either help Ami, or swim back and forth between islands several times.

Bad storm that night. Favorites are very happy they have a new tarp, Fans have a rough time of it. In the morning, some of them are shivering uncontrollably.

Immunity challenge - 2 large rope net bags are suspended in the air, maybe 15 feet up. Each bag has an opening about 2 ft across, with a rigid ring to hold it open. Each team picks 2 men & 2 women to hold the ropes that hold the bags up. The rest of each team throws coconuts into the other teams bag to increase its weight, until one team lets go. It appeared that you had to pick up a coconut, run up to the bag, and throw it in. The next person on your team had to wait until you ran back to the pile to take their turn. Fans win when they figure out early that underhand works much better than overhand.

Cirie throws in with James/Parvati and Amanda/Ozzie, and demands they vote out Yau-Man. Ozzie wants to vote out Eliza. Arguing ensues. Later, Jonathan & Cirie argue, since Jonathan is angry she left his alliance for the other one. At the end, Jonathan decides his alliance should all vote Parvati, hoping the other alliance will split between Yau & Eliza. More arguing at Council, Jonathan and Yau vote Parvati, Ami votes Cirie (for no reason I could see), everyone else including Eliza votes Yau.

Thank you! So who got voted off? Not my cute little Yau-man? :frowning:

Yup. Cirie was terrified that if he went to Exile Island, he’d find the HII.

Blame the evil Cirie for that one.

I don’t care what kind of strategy she had, you don’t mess with the Yau and still stay in my good books

Interesting note about Exile Island this time around. It’s better to send new people to the island since they would have to retrack the whole clue-list each time. If you send someone back, they can skip to the end. Of course why would someone from EI tell the rest of the tribe that? They wouldn’t.
Each tribe now has a three person minority, so the tribal council next week shouldn’t be a surprise, unless we mix up the teams (But personally I think that comes at 16 contestants left)

Alas, poor Yau-Man. I knew him well…

The “favorites” are really getting annoying. Christ almighty, they should know how stupid it is to yell and argue with other tribemates this early in the game. Jonathan is as big an asshole as he was the first time around, and Cerie has turned in a bitch, instead of being the laid back generally nice person she was on her first go. I’m hoping they all get voted off before the final 4.

Agreed completely about Jonathan. As for Cirie, well, I’m not so convinced she changed, but rather her circumstances did. In her first season she was persona non grata from day one. She and Dreamz were openly told in no uncertain terms that they were going to be the first ones out, and then the tribe even went so far as to almost maliciously exclude them from things. (I seem to recall a coffee incident.) She was saved only by some sort of twist, IIRC, where she and Dreamz were sent to the other tribe.

Basically, she had absolutely no power whatsoever during her first season, and so was forced to play the nice little wallflower role. By contrast, in this season she has all the power. I don’t really see her as abusing that power, or being a bitch. Not even a little. She had a very legitimate reason to be concerned about Yau Man, and anyone who is a fan of Yau would probably concede that.

She wanted the guy who has a preternatural knack for acquiring hidden immunity idols (he holds the career record with three, yes?) gone from the game, and she stuck to her guns. Good on her, I say.

In short, I don’t think here niceness from her first season was entirely genuine, and I don’t think she would be perceived as a bitch if her target was, say, Parvati instead of Yau.

I really don’t see the big deal in spoiler boxing “Yau Man got voted off!” for three measly hours. It’s common courtesy. Three hours. For heaven’s sake, is your world going to come to an end?

Popular show threads are frequently started earlier in the day and people spend the first page on idle chit-chat and there’s no reason everyone not on the east coast should be excluded from the pre-show idle chit-chat. It would be nice if someone on the east coast would announce, “show’s started, no spoilers for the next three hours!” but I doubt we could count on that.

What is so wrong about spoiler boxing things for three freaking hours?

I love Jonathan. I forgot how evil he can be. I was a little confused during tribal counsel. Both Jonathan and Cirie seemed disappointed at the outcome, but I guess Cirie won this round.

I don’t know why I care, but I’m rooting for the fans and hoping the favs get attacked by fire ants or something.

This is the same Ami that thought Scout, the other gay woman from her season who has been with her partner for the last 30 years that (paraphrased) “You’re not gay enough for the all-girl alliance.”

Surprise, surprise, Scout had already rallied everyone against Ami and she was booted that week.

So yeah, I think Ami was pretty dumb, but she appears to be learning.

And as for the spoiler box argument… I think they’re useless in the episode thread after the show has already aired. I’m with the people who think some of you folks need to get a little self control.

After the show has aired there is no more idle chit-chat.

My world isn’t going to end, but it’s annoying to read spoiler boxes. First they hurt my eyes, leaving a residual burn-in from reading white text on a dark background. And second, I read threads using the mousewheel scroll, but then have to bail out of that to triple-click the spoiler boxes.

But none of that is really the point. The point is having consideration for other people. On the one hand, the west coasters want every single poster to use spoiler boxes until the west coasters – apparently the chosen people – watch the show live.

On the other hand, the rest of us are asking nothing of posters; people should be able to post normally. It is the responsibility of the ONE READER, not ALL THE POSTERS, to keep the reader spoiler free. So who is asking for more? Clearly the ones asking for spoiler boxes.

How about I turn it around? I really don’t see the big deal in avoiding the thread for three measly hours. It’s common sense. Three hours. For heaven’s sake, is your world going to come to an end?
