Survivor 36: Ghost Island premieres tonight

I’d pretty much come to the conclusion that ego is the primary motivation for pretty much any action for Chris.

Also, I don’t seem to recall any previous bad blood between Desiree and Libby (though it’s taking me longer than usual to get to know all the players and catch on to how they relate to one another, so I may well have missed something). Desiree may have tipped her hand with the failed blindside attempt. Could become a somewhat interesting subplot. Or not.

I’m with you on that, I don’t even know who Desiree is .

I don’t think Desiree and Libby were ever on the same tribe until the merge. Probably why they targeted her.

Yes. She was one of the last Malolo standing (I think there are 3 total: Michael, Libby and Jenna(?)). She’s also the most dangerous one socially…Jenna’s kind of meh and Michael is a physical threat, but not a social one.

Doing the math, this is the youngest group of castaways ever. The average age is 28, between China’s average age of 30.2. It’s tied for first (with China) for the fewest players over 40 (2). And Angela, at the Age of 42, is the youngest “oldest” player ever.

Yes, I hope it’s not a sign of a trend.

Seeing Chris do himself in was great. And I love the irony in that by making his Idol more powerful he ended up hurting himself - had he just been content with having the Idol be useful only for the one TC, he would’ve been forced to play it and would still be in the game.

I can see the benefits of shifting to younger Survivors, in that the oldest ones were frequently picked off early, and tended to wear down more mentally and often “go along for the ride” if they made it into the late game. But I also think there’s downsides to the younger ones (more airheads, perhaps?) and I agree that I’m having trouble telling the difference between a lot of the younger white women … I can identify Kellyn by now but Jenna/Libby/Chelsea are indistinguishable for me.

I recognize Kellyn only because she reminds me of Vanessa Bayer. I know Libby is the one they were targeting. I honestly don’t have a clue who Chelsea and Jenna are and which tribe they are aligned with.

Also, until Jeff asked him a tribal, I was questioning myself if Sea Bass was already voted out, because I didn’t notice him at all this episode.

Good call on Vanessa Bayer! I like her (and I like Kellen).

I was initially thinking Chris shouldn’t even play for the extra power on the idol. Then I thought his vote didn’t matter anyway, so it was probably a wash whether to play for it or not. Then I considered the possibility that a challenge monster like him could win II and therefore an idol he could save for a rainy day would have value. But when you don’t win II, you have to use it, dummy!

I would have been interesting if Chris played his idol and there weren’t those two votes for Libby. No vote would count and they would have to re-vote.

True! And weird! I wonder for whom they would have voted.

It would have been loco for Dom not to use the Legacy immunity so I’m glad he listened to my screaming at the television.

I agree with above that the girls kind of threw away an opportunity to blindside Libby and let the feud fester another day but I can understand. Chris could easily win the next challenge (or three) and was apparently pretty annoying.

Did anyone understand how the Ghost Island Extend-An-Idol challenge worked? It looked like there were ten or twelve containers that he could choose from at random but after picking the first one, he read from a note that said (paraphrasing) “Your Idol can now be used at either of the next TWO tribal councils”. Did they know what order he was going to pick them in? Did the producers, knowing that it was Chris, secretly put a picture of his face on one of them figuring he’d pick that one first?

If he had to pick them in a certain order, it’s kind of cruel to put the card of death in the second container.

Yeah, I noticed that too. If it was all random the note should have said “this adds one tribal council to your idol’s life”.

He had to pick them in a certain order, but choosing from the left or right side. The first row of bamboo had one stripe on them, the second had two, and so on.

Eta: just rewatched and he had to pick one of two each time down a line. So each couple had “no vote” or the correct number of tribals it was good for.

As I understood it, there were five rows of two choices each, and he had to choose between the two (starting at the bottom closest to him, then going up). So I assume each one was a 50/50 shot of either an extra tribal for the Idol or losing his vote.

Yup, he had the chance to add 5 tribals to the idol without losing his vote. He made one successful guess and then one bad guess, so he added one tribal, but lost his vote.

More importantly, as I asked my husband when Probst called on him, “How is he still high after all this time?”
