So they brought back the game-breaking Yul idol, essentially guaranteeing the finder a spot in the finals, or at least up to whenever the idol expires. Boring.
It seems to me though, that the best strategy for that idol is to announce you have it as soon as you find it, which means you’ll never have to use it. If everyone knows you have it, there’s no way they’d get an alliance together to vote for you to burn the idol, since it means someone on that alliance gets sent home.
According to Probst in the TV Guide preview show, Tyler Perry tweeted him the idea for the game-breaking Terry Deitz/Yul Kwon idol. Why they decided this was a good idea to bring back is beyond me.
I thought about that too, but the blindside is king and I imagine they want everyone smiling these huge smiles like, “we finally got rid of that guy!” only for Tony to say, “nah I don’t want to go now” and have all those smiles drop.
But good for Tony for looking for and finding it! I was thinking it was either hidden in plain sight at camp (part of the structure) or buried beneath some marker. But it was just like a normal idol, in a big tree.
muldoonthief, what was the Yul-idol and how was it different than a normal HII?
The safe play for the 5 is to vote off either Spencer or Tasha, so we can assume that’s what the won’t do. They’ll probably get rid of Jefra. If Spencer, Tash and Jefra can pull Kass back in (which would be hilarious!) they can vote off anyone but Tony, but I don’t see that happening.
Same as this idol - you don’t have to play it until after the votes are read. So the only time you use it is if you actually get voted out. Yul Kwon was the last guy to have this type of HII, and wound up winning his season.
I call it game breaking because it’s way too powerful, especially if you find it with only 7 people left. With a standard HII, you can try a blindside and hope the owner doesn’t play it, or lead him to believe that he’s going to get voted and get him to play it needlessly, like last night with Spencer. But the only way to get rid of this idol is to organize a vote for Tony, knowing full well that someone else is really going to go home, which is why I say that revealing it now is Tony’s smartest play.
ETA: Best line of the night, while looking at the papayas: “They look like Morgan’s boobs!”
These people are smart enough to question his “fake” idol he pulled out. They also know there is a super powered HII out there. I think that you could get 5 of the remaining group to put some split vote together just to burn Tony’s idol, now.
Yeah, I’m not excited to see the “after votes are read” Idol back. Just seems too strong. A split vote is very risky late in the game (just not enough people).
I really thought Spencer was going to be smart enough to play the Idol for Jeremiah. (I know he wasn’t privy to Kass’ assertion that she thought he had the Idol, but based on what Woo and others said, he should’ve figured it out). I think he just wimped out and didn’t want to be the guy voted out because he gave his Idol away.
Jefra already had a poor chance to win, but I think this seals it. No one is going to vote for her.
The really sharp play on Spencer’s behalf would have been to let it out somehow that he had the idol, but act like he was unaware they knew. Leave it sitting out or something. Then give it to Jeremiah. I was still hoping he would have the cajones to give it to hand it off, but that would have been a slight stretch.
This has been a pretty excellent season IMHO, but the Super Idol just ruins it. Tony is a dickhead supreme and knowing we’re going to have to listen to him endlessly from now until the moment he wins it all kills it for me. He’s the kind of guy you rejoice about when they get booted.
Jeffra’s right in that everyone is taking Tony’s words as gospel “like he’s Jesus” while he’s the most deceitful one of the bunch – by far. Can’t believe everyone keeps giving him another chance. I know they don’t see our edit, but JFC, can’t they see this? Smart move by Spencer telling everyone that Tony’s getting their votes at FTC. But I don’t see it helping now.
Jeremiah divulging that he’s a model was high comedy. Like we care, dude.
Tony is Russell Hantz with social skills. I don’t see any way he doesn’t win it all. And that sucks, because unlike Russell – whom I liked quite a bit – I cannot stand Tony and want him gone immediately.
I wonder if Tony will realize that no one knows what the special power of his idol is and he makes up some story about it that gives him even more advantage. Maybe that his vote alone counts at TC when he plays it?
I think he might, just because it will give him a chance to talk about his bag of tricks and he likes to make shit up to bamboozle everyone else.
Oddly I also see the similarity between the two but I like Tony a lot more.
He’s arrogant and paranoid (quite a combination really) but he’s not mean or playing just to get at people, he’s playing the game and his love of the game really comes through. Everything he does, even when it’s stupid, is from his point of view designed to get him further in the game.
While I would much prefer that he didn’t win, at this point its going to take some serious work to achieve that. Anyone who does get rid of him deserves the win.
I could see him messing with them for sure. Really though, the only play here is for them to all ally against Tony and force him to use it immediately. “Sorry bud, just for this vote, then the alliance is back on.” Course, that’s not gonna happen.
I was screaming at the TV for Spencer to give the idol to Jeremiah.
Me too. They’ve tried to give Tony the villain edit, but he’s just not an asshole. Russell was a giant douche, far beyond even an “I love to hate him” level of jackassery. They have really been playing up Sarah’s reactions towards Tony at jury, which makes me think he’s an absolute lock for Final Three - which isn’t hard to believe at this point with that ridiculous idol. Which makes the final immunity challenge not all that exciting a few weeks in advance, because he has to win it - no one is going to take him with them.
I was, too, but then we see things that the editors want us to see, and that the folks on the Island might not. Who wants to be the guy who gives his idol away and then gets voted out?
