Survivor: Exile Island Ep. 8 - "An Emerging Plan"

Ironically, I didn’t even start watching “Survivor” regularly until the Big Medical Emergency in the Outback. Maybe I should go back to that.

Heh! I saw his farewell message and said, “Wow…who knew Nick was pretentious?” The message itself wasn’t so pretentious, but using your farewell message to give a great big pep rally for Nike’s corporate slogan (“Just do it!”) is.

Yawn. There was one exciting moment this week–and I missed it because I went to go get some Advil. Trying to get the childproof cap off, and suddenly my roommate yells “Bruce just took a machete to the face!!!

Not nearly as emergent as I had hoped, but I suppose we’ll get there. I was freaked out about the tooth thing, though, because tooth pain actually gives me nightmares. (I have very bad teeth that hate me.)

Shane is such a dick I can’t even love to hate him. And when did Cirie get all loyal? They’ve been talking about kicking her out from day whatever!

Did you happen to catch his enderview on the morning show? A big, fairly good looking man (if I do say so myself), but he came across as just being … off. He’s a little weird. Sure, it was the numbers thing, former tribe sticks together, getting rid of a physical threat, but I just wonder how he actually got along with everyone behind and betwixt the scenes.

Terry was offering her safety for two weeks. If former-Casaya wanted to pagong former-Lamina, it would take 12 days. (Shane would probably go when Terry whipped out his idol.) So she wouldn’t gain anything by rolling.

Exactly. And she’d lose: be seen as a traitor, no doubt lose the votes of all former Casaya’s in the faint chance of ending up as final two.

What did Nick toss to Cerie, before he left?

It looked like a manky old sock, but it was probably something a little more useful.

He probably gave Cirie a motivational talk at some point between merge and TC.

“I know you’re feeling a little left out over here. You’re older than the rest. You’re not in as good of shape. takes sock off But you see this sock? It’s old and smelly and kind of ratty-looking, yeah. But this sock goes out and DOES IT! It keeps my foot warm all the time, while I’m going out and pursuing my dreams. You can be this sock, Cirie! You just have to go DO IT! Cirie, BE THE SOCK!”

And ten seconds after he left her sitting there on the beach, she probably burst out laughing and busted a gut or something…

Agreed. Terry’s plan is, apparently, to win every single immunity challenge from now till forever, although he does have a one-challenge cushion. I thought the “throw the challenge to gain numbers” strategy was pretty solid and obvious, especially when the Casayans are so incredibly transparent.

I don’t think I have respect for any remaining player this season. Frantically gobbling down rice before your new tribemates show up? Classy. Austin blurting out his “strategy” at tribal council? Genius. Bruce thinking he’s gained everyone’s respect after they clumsily suck up to him? Vapid.

The only thing I’m looking forward to is the eventual implosion once the pagonging is done.

clip show: yes, they ate a snake.

Oh, and Austin? If you’ve got a strategy that involves trying to fool people, don’t tell them about it. And if the strategy is to appear to be weak, then let go of the damned log. But, to be fair, it did work… the other group said in their huddle that they’d vote off Austin if he hadn’t been so weak in the challenge, so go figure.

If Terry can really put the heat on next week, and I doubt it seriously, he might be able to convince people like Bruce and Cirie that they can make it farther in the game allied to him, since it’s obvious that if it does get down to the tribe of six in the Final 6, then it’s Bruce, Cirie and Shane, or some variation of that order, off next. I really hope Bruce is smart enough to realize that; his strategy last night was “sure, Terry just promised me final 5, but my current alliance is saying final 6, baby! Woo!” with the devil sign fingers in the air… :dubious:

I was engaging in a little thought exercise last night, but I didn’t come to any conclusions, so I’ll toss it out there for y’all to help me with.

I was wondering if Terry could have used both of his immunities to throw Casaya for a loop. It would be contingent on finding out who Casaya was voting for ahead of time, but here’s my thought.

Let’s say Terry finds out who Casaya is voting for before tribal council (we’ll use Nick for the purposes of this exercise). Then he gets all of the former La Minas to agree to vote for Shane. If he can swing Bruce to their side, so much the better. Now, just before the vote, he gives his immunity necklace to Nick. Would the Casayans have had a back-up vote (I don’t think so)? If not, maybe they split their votes among a couple of the LaMinans, and the LaMina voting bloc carries TC. If each of the Casayans instead decided to vote for Terry because he left himself vulnerable, he whips out the immunity idol and says, “Nuh-uh!” and we re-vote again, with a possible fracturing of the Casaya bloc.

The downside is that the Casayans might have just defaulted to Austin and voted him out. I think at that point suspicion would swing toward Terry owning the immunity idol, so Casaya would make him burn it at the earliest possible opportunity.

It just seemed to me that, 4-6 LaMina to Casaya, and possessing two immunities, last night was the only opportunity Terry had to really shake things up. His only real hope at this point is to keep winning immunity challenges so that, when he’s the last LaMina left, he might be able to play the Casayans against each other. “Hey everybody, I’ve got the immunity idol, so one of y’all’s going home tonight. Which one will it be, huh?”

I know I would be tempted to hide that immunity idol as long as humanly possible, but at this point Terry can be sure he’s going to have to use it two episodes from now, unless he keeps winning immunity challenges.

The flaw in your evil scheme is that there’s no re-vote. If someone whips out the immunity idol, the person with the 2nd most votes gets booted immediately. So in your scenario, the vote is Terry 6, Shane 4 – Shane goes home. Which is not bad; but the balance of power is now 5 to 4, and Terry doesn’t have the immunity idol any more.

I had to laugh when Cerise was complaining about the “sales pitch” she had been given to switch alliances.

“It was like he was a dictionary salesman. And I’m like, ‘I have a huge set of encyclopedias, and you want to sell me a dictionary?’”

Uhm, sweetheart, you apparently aren’t much familiar with either . . .

There is no re-vote, the runner-up in the vote total gets the boot (its been left unsaid what happens if there is a tie for runner-up), so if it had been used last night, Shane would be gone.

I think rather than try to explain Terry reasoning it is easier just to say that Terry has no-frickin’ clue how to play Survivor. Terry’s best hope was to get things to 5 Casayans to 4 LaMinans then spend the next three days trying again to steal a vote from the Casayan side, hoping that with the head Casayan gone maybe people are more apt to switch. He’s still at a disadvantage at 5 vs. 4, but with more hope than sitting at tribal-blocs of 6 vs. 3.

Thanks for the clarification. I didn’t know that about the voting.

I think it’s an interesting “what if.” Despite being a complete whack-job, Shane seems to be in the driver’s seat at Casaya. Taking him out could conceivably be worth burning your super-secret immunity. Or not. Hard to tell.

On the other hand, he might be one to keep around, using the no-way-in-hell-will-a-jury-give-him-a-million-over-me reasoning.

Listen, if you join with us you make it to the final five. Doesn’t that sound like a good deal? We keep you to vote all your people off then once they are gone we vote you out. But you do get to make it to the final five. Really, it’s such a great deal.

You can tell that Terry is used to ordering people around because his persuasion skills are horrible.

Sorry it is late. Baby duty forced a delayed viewing of the DVR! And I don’t feel like a missed much. This is a truly awful cast. I think I just like Austin and Sally. Everyone else I can take or leave.

And now, the less anticipated, highly derivative RICH RANKINGS! (Tribe and previous ranking in parenthesis)

FORGOT TO FILE A 1040- I guess you couldn’t outwit everyone!

Tina,Melinda,Misty,Ruth, Bobby,Dan- It is sad that the losers are probably a more interesting group than the jury.
Nick- (Merge/La Mina)- I liked Nick early on, but I think I was just confusing him with Austin. I can’t name three things about him.

(COMING NEXT WEEK- THE BOBBY JON LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD- The Jury deserves a special distinction from those in loser lodge.)

EATING BEEF JERKY- You’re still playing, but you’re praying for a tribe scramble!

Austin- (Merge/LaMina)- I’m not sure I understood his whole scheme. He wanted to look weak so he waited until the final three? Plus, he did that amazing “pull back up” trick that I couldn’t do after 8 hours of sleep!?

WHO SAID ANYTHING ABOUT A MERGE?- Middle of the pack players, the lotta ya!

Shane- (Jerky/Casya)- Talk about bipolar. One second he is trying to get out, the next he is holding a Casaya pep rally. I think Shane will be the guy that forces the break in the alliance. Courtney will decide it is time!

HEY! LOOK AT HIS MOHAWK-You might make the merge, but you’re grimacing from the jury row!

Danielle- (Merge/Casaya)- (This space left intentionally blank.)
Sally- (Tom/La Mina)- I still think there is room for a Cirie/Sally alliance to shift things around. Call it a hunch.

LOOKING FOR A BIG TOM TO ENGLISH DICTIONARY- Big Tom has spent more combined days on the show than anyone. But he didn’t quite grab the brass ring.

Courtney- (Merge/Casaya)- Moves up because she is starting to look like the perfect #2 choice. Has all the “best” qualities of Jerri, Jenna and Katie.
Cirie- (Tom/Casaya)- Hasn’t her fate changed since episode #1? She was right to reject Terry’s “wonderful” offer. He completely mishandled that. But I learned one thing this episode: if you have a set of encyclopedias, you do NOT need a dictionary!
Bruce- (Mohawk/Casaya)- He is a bit clueless, but I sort of like him. Sadly, I think he was taken in by Aras and Shane’s flattery. However, he was correct not to swing. If Terry had offered him the immunity necklace, he might have had incentive.

ARE YOU A RAT OR A SNAKE?- Reserved for a MAXIMUM of two players. You have to be in the driver’s seat for this spot.

Aras- (Rat/Casaya)- He is right. He gets along with everyone. He may be the consensus choice.
Terry- (Rat/La Mina)- The idol and a possible run on challenges are the only thing that keep Terry in this spot (and who else would go here?). But if there is a “sales” challenge, Terry is screwed.

btw, that’s one thing we learned from the Clip Show 3 weeks ago – Austin and Sally are Tight (for reasons I’ve forgotten).

Fighter pilots tend to be very competitive. (They have to be.) Now, I’ve never been in the military; but it seems as if they may be better at thinking tactically than strategically.
