I know a few posts have been made to the other thread, but somebody has to start a weekly thread…
If Rupert was truly agonized over voting against Rudy, the smart thing to do would be to approach Ethan. Rudy + Ethan + Rupert = bye bye Jenna, who is at least as useless as Rudy (apparently her role in the IC was to stand on the raft and supervise.)
Was it Boston Rob who had the brainstorm of lifting the boat out of the water upside-down? I didn’t think he was that bright.
This episode is just more evidence that Rupert is just not good at Survivor.
I’d also point out that it was the first of the season I’ve seen, and I only caught the last 20 minutes. I like to start off seasons that way, so I’m not jaded by the initial BS groups go through. If they haven’t gelled by the fourth day, they ain’t gonna.
With that said, I’m a big fan of the red team. They showed that they work together pretty well, have some survival smarts, and are physically competitive. Rupert’s team is melting away - they just don’t have any cohesiveness at all. My jury’s still out on Hatch’s team.
What was with Rudy’s exit speech? “Look out for me” or something? Yikes.
Jenna is beyond annoying. What an arrogant, bossy snot. Rupert and Ethan and Rudy should’ve voted her out on principle.
Rich Hatch’s nudity is past the funny point and into the “we get it already” point, at least for me. I’m sure his tribemates felt the same a while ago.
I think that was Boston Rob with the boat idea. Smart move. Won the challenge for them.
Rudy gets the award for best confessional speech since Christa’s back in the Amazon. It looked like the Probster really got emotional at Rudy’s exit too, which is something that I don’t recall ever seeing before.
It sure looked to me that Boston Rob had the idea to pull the boat onto the platform, though it is hard to say for sure. The editing gave that impression though. Still, I think he gets the award for most improved player so far.
I do think Rudy needed to go home if the tribe was going to have any hope of winning anything, but I also think that Ethan should have pulled his head out of his posterior and get into Rupert’s good graces, if only to rid himself of Jenna, who he seems to hate with a fiery passion. I heard somewhere that they dated for a while … interesting.
Chapera seems to be the team to beat, though, and Boston Rob wins for this week’s Brightest Survivor. Lift the boat up … brilliant. I’m rather ashamed to say that if it had been me, I may not have thought of that.
My friends and I formed a pool this time around, picking names out of a hat, $5 a name. My list of five included both Rudy and Tina. I’m certainly out $10 so far, but after last night, I have hope, because my list also includes Boston Rob.
What I’m really hoping for, though, is a tribe switcheroo. It’s certainly been done before, and I think it would be a great idea–blow all those alliances they were so keen on (forming an alliance before building shelter??) and make everyone start over.
Yes, it was Rob telling Amber to sit on the end of the overturned boat, so they could get the other end of it up on the raft and tip it over rightside-up without having to bail. Good idea, that.
I don’t remember Jenna being quite so bossy and snotty in the first season of Survivor. She is quite the bitch this time around.
I do agree that Rudy had to go, though. Yeah, we know he was a Navy SEAL, but the guy’s what, 78? He’s past his prime. He’s in better shape than most 78-year-olds, but he still wasn’t much help.
And that exit speech? “I have friends, so don’t cross my path.” WTF? Bitter much?
aint it cool news has spoilers leading up to the final two. Things like this have been seen before and proven wrong, but it said Rudy would be voted off last night. I kinda wish I hadn’t read it.
Gad Rupert spare us the crocodile tears in your next interview. Guess he’ll always be the big baby of the group as well as not being all that popular among the contestants from what I’ve read (ex-survivor Jeff Varner’s website.) Also he’s a terrible player in my opinion.
I just loved Rudy’s exit speech. Revengeful and bitter exit speeches are the best!
Yes, Boston Rob seems to be smarter this time around and is becoming a good strong player, but I still don’t like him at all.
What was with Colby’s opening speech about Richard. I can’t quite remember it correctly (somebody help me out here,) but what does going around naked have to do with being gay and overweight. Sounded very homophobic to me, to say the least. I guess he’d feel alright it Jenna M. was doing it.
I think Colby was just noting the irony and humor of being a straight guy stranded on an island with a fat, naked, gay guy. Colby is one of the more intelligent players. I wouldn’t interpret his remarks in a negative way.
I’m also thinking (hoping?) that Rudy’s exit speach was meant as a joke. It’s hard to tell with Rudy, since he’s got such a dead-pan delivery.
Rudy had to go, but Jenna should be next. I’m pretty sure she was just as bossy last time around. Bad strategy…
Thanks for starting this jsc1953 : I almost did it twice but in the end I said well, there is a thread – to be clear I’m saying you were right to do it.
I wondered on PI if Rupert was specially good at catching fish or if he was just surronded by terrible fishers – question answered I guess. I think Jenna & Jerri need him – because they know they have alienated Ethan.
I was surprised Hatch was the 2nd to last guy on the leg of the reward challange – essentially saying he was stronger/faster than Lex – he was – but if I hadn’t seen it I wouldn’t have believed it.
I think we need more of smart-ass Rob, less of Boston Rob
Jenna HAD to turn on Rudy. If she had voted off Ethan, and their tribe lost the IC next week, she would have faced a 2-2 tie. As she had votes from the first TC, then she would have been the ousted member.
This way, she not only gets a 3-1 advantage, she also has Rupert as the obvious ouster (or can still oust Ethan).
*Jerri played it smart this time. She let Jenna do the dirty work (never be the one to lead the attack!) and she rides to merger.
I think Jerri may do ok (though the previews show an argument next week).
*Mogo Mogo is a weird tribe. The personalities don’t blend well (there is some charm lost in this game by bringing the All-Stars back). But I am enjoying Hatch. I didn’t watch series one, so his schtick (which seems turned up a notch) is new to me. I hope he makes the merger.
Despite the notion of wanting to be sitting next to Richard in the final two because he is despised, I don’t think this will happen (or should happen) for two reasons:
Fear. They can talk a good game about him playing in weak competition, but those people are scared of the guy. The may tell themselves that they are as good, but I doubt they believe it.
Respect. I think they all know that if Richard DOES make the last two, he will say at TC that he had the deck stacked against him more than anyone. Yet through this, though he is disliked by the jury, he DESERVES to win because he is worthy.
Referencing the Ethan/Jenna fling, does anyone think there is a better chance of sex on this show than before. Some of these people have ALLEGEDLY hooked up at social gatherings since (even ones who weren’t on the same show).
Not necessarily. They’ve only done the “previous votes in case of a tie” on the first Survivor and Australia. We don’t know that they’re bringing that type of tie-breaker back.
What I love about Survivor is that some people take the rules given by Pretty-boy Probst and follow them to the letter-- and lose because some other group decides to take a shortcut and win everything! Rob’s move wasn’t that brilliant-- because it’s something that you get taught on the very first day of any decent paddling lesson-- but it makes it very obvious that many people on this show would be dead dead dead if they weren’t handed rice and blankets.
I’m betting that next show someone will smash all the locks on that box in order to get fed-- and that Mogo Mogo will lose yet again.
Yes, but Probst never said they couldn’t lift the boat and tip it over. He just said they had to turn it over, bail it out and row ashore. Rob and his team just figured out a way to do it quicker. They also tipped it over underwater - rather than remove all the weighted boxes one by one, they dumped the whole boat over and the boxes all fell out at once.
That’s not cheating, to me.
The locked boxes had instructions on them, “Keep dry, do not open” or something like that. I’m sure smashing the locks and opening it before getting all the keys is against the rules and would result in having the box and its contents removed from their camp.
I don’t remember exactly what they’ve done other times, but in Marquesas, they solved a three-way tie by having the players pick colored rocks out of a bag. Two rocks were pink, one rock was purple, and the player who picked the purple rock was the one to leave.
Seems like they did something different to solve a tie in Amazon, too, but I can’t remember what.
My guess is that Rupert realized Rudy was the best candidate to be voted off, but he felt bound by his earlier agreement with him. So he essentially told Jerri and Jenna to go ahead and form a deal with Ethan. That way he could absolve his conscious by technically not helping to vote Rudy off, while standing by and knowing it was going to happen regardless. Ironically, there was a lot of suspicion that Sandra may have used a similar tactic against Rupert in the last series.
Personally, I’m surprised by the ways the teams are playing. I predicted that Saboga would be the strongest ribe and Chapura would be the weakest, but the exact opposite seems to be happening. But given the personalities on Chapura, it’ll be interesting to see what happens the first time they lose an immunity and the knives come out.
Speaking of which, I missed the discussion in the Chapura camp where the players were talking about alliances (I think). What was said?
I saw part of the CBS morning show interview with Rudy online last night through Real One. He said that he was really mad about being booted and was going to do something about it but after thinking about it a little bit, he realized they voted the right person off.
He said that he wasn’t three years older but rather, “three years slower.”
I was also a little suprised that Saboga is the screw-up tribe. But it doesn’t seem to be unreasonable now. Rupert said he was going to play a different game this time around, not be so much of a provider or leader, Rudy was kind of slow, and Ethan turns out to be a bit of a dufus.
