Survivor: PI - 9/18/03 (Premier) - Probable spoilers

I’ve thought about that as well. But the problem I found was the food. I’m not sure what they would be able to eat. Rifle hunting would be dangerous with city-folk. Bow-hunting would be less dangerous, but really cruel(and most likely ineffective) with city-folk. Gathering would be difficult(well at least in the Rocky Mountain area,) there arn’t a whole lot of obvious edible plants. The would have to get a guide to show what is okay to eat, and it still would be hard to find much. I guess they could set up traps, but that, as well as the hunting, would need a huge waiver from the local BLM. That pretty much limits it to fishing again, and fishing in the mountains is no where near as easy as it is in the sea apparently(grap spear, waddle out, point spear, bring back fish).

It would be cool, but as you say you would need savvy campers, and that doesn’t seem to be the format they are going for.

I am really happy with this season’s start as well. I like Rupert the best, but agree he’ll make it far enough to get on the jury, but will be voted off as a threat before making it much further than that.

Lot’s of chuckles. I noticed the “Morgan behind” caption as well. My favorite laugh, after the already mentioned pirating by Rupert (and he does look like Hagrid, cracks me up), was Lil’s comment on the water. It looks rusty. Where exactly was the rust coming from, is there an extensive amount of plumbing on the island we aren’t seeing, or could the experienced scout master have missed the possibility of tannin? Between that comment and not checking the map, I had tears.

Plus Lil’s comment about boiling the water for 40-some odd hours. WTF was that about? If you boiled it for 40 hours, it would boil away. How long do you have to boil water for it to be safe, just a little while, right? Twenty minutes or so?
She should know that, as a Scout Leader of many years.
I couldn’t quite tell if she was serious or just being sarcastic. She’s a little hard to read.

I really hated Andrew’s (do I have the right name? The “leader” of Morgan) comments after the IC.
“Let’s learn from it and move on.”
Bite me, Attorney-Boy. This isn’t the boardroom or the courtroom. That kind of “One-Minute Manager” shit always bugs me.

I agree. And how do you keep the masses of people away? In Africe, or on an Island I can see how they kept “civilization” away. But with masses of fans here could they really do that?

I never had much interest in watching Survivor before, but I had caught bits of the special on VH-1 about the previous Survivor shows and thought it looked rather interesting and decided to pop my cherry on this one.

I’m loving it!

As with many others, Rupert’s my fave so far. I thought Nicole jumped the gun trying to form alliances and chose the completely wrong person to ally herself with. I think I could get hooked on Survivor now.

Anyone know if the previous seasons are on video or anything? I had such little interest in any of the earlier ones that I don’t know who won any of them (except the first one, caught that from the VH-1 special)

I met this cat from the Cowlichan(?) tribe when I was in Nanaimo. (After all, Canada is in North America.) He’s a documentary filmmaker, and he loaned us one of his films. It dealt with salmon fishing, including how to make a First Nations salmon spear. (They used modern materials, but obviously it could be done with traditional materials.) It also showed how to clean and smoke the salmon. Good stuff. The fishing looked rather good. They stood on the bank or used a canoe and tossed the spears. They used such tactics as driving the fish toward a spearman. Certainly food abounds, and “city folk” could survive without too much trouble.

I’d also like to see them dealing with the cold for a change. The thing is, though, that the Viewing Public like to see women who are not wearing too much. Northern climes are not suited to such “panda” (a term I learned here on The Dope. ).

So I’d like to see a Survivor: North America, but I doubt it will happen because the players will want to stay covered.

Crunchy Frog asked:

Highlights from Seasons 1 & 2 are available on DVD. However, they have not released any of the full seasons on DVD. Given that they just did so for Big Brother 3, of all things, I’m hopeful that we can look forward to some Survivors on DVD. I know I would rewatch the first season, at the very least.

Complete series of The Real World have also been released on DVD.

If they do release Survivor DVD sets, I hope they do it right. Complete episodes, with bonus footage, audition tapes, and extra features like appearances on Letterman and the Today show. But most of all, I’d like to watch the show with commentary tracks. Burnett and Probst would be great, but I’d also like to hear the players’ comments as they were watching the show. Especially if they recorded them individually, so you’d get the different viewpoints on what was happening.

I think it was clear she was making a joke, as in “this water is so filthy, you couldn’t drink it even if you boiled it for a ridiculously long amount of time.”

Welcome aboard, Cap’n Crunchy! I’ve been hooked since I watched the finale of the first season. Highly addictive stuff, but very enjoyable.

As David B notes, they’re not available on video. I’d watch S1 myself, since I missed almost all of it. If you happen to find someone who has them on video, I’d recommend S2 (Australia) and S6 (Amazon) as the best ones to watch start-to-finish. Frankly, though, I liked 'em all.

If you really want to know, the winners are in the spoiler box below:
S2: Australian Outback was won by a middle-aged woman named Tina, who beat out young Texan Colby after Colby stupidly chose to take his friend Tina to the finals instead of the very unpopular Keith.

S3: Africa was won pretty handily by Ethan, a young professional soccer player with basically no personality. Fan favorite Lex, a much more colorful character, missed out on the finals when he got sick in the last couple days.

S4: Marquesas was won by Vecepia, a middle-aged woman who is quite sure that Jesus forgives her for breaking her agreement with fan favorite Kathy, who finished third. Worst finale ever.

S5: Thailand was won by soft-core porn actor Brian, who appears to be quite the jerk in real life, but who kept a lid on it during the game and did a great job of playing his teammates for fools.

S6: Amazon was won by bitchy model Jenna, who stomped weirdo Matt in the final vote. Again, the fan favorite placed third. This time, it was a guy named Rob, who did an amazing job making and breaking alliances seemingly at will. Rob was also the most amusing contestant ever, with any number of priceless observations and one-liners.
If this season holds your interest, you will be able to see a number of the previous contestants next spring, since the next series has been announced as an “all-star” version mixing and matching contestants from previous seasons.

Here is the “Survivor FAQ” from Television Without Pity: http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/faq.cgi?show=47

Some of it is specific to TWoP, but there’s a lot of useful general info there, too. (This is what I used to catch myself up–I started watching in Season 6, The Amazon.) Look particularly in the second section of FAQs for the asking about “significant events” etc.

There are also links to all the recaps for all the shows. (Click on “Recaps & Extras”) That’s where I looked for details when I heard various things from past episodes referred to.

Of course, this was all before I discovered David’s site…

I’d say that both TWoP and RNO are great resources, but in different ways. TWoP is heavier on the snark, and reading it is like making fun of the show with your bitchiest friends. RNO has more in-depth analysis of the game play, which is more useful in understanding the show.

Reading the latest analysis of what the current Survivors should have learned from previous seasons is really informative. Definitely check that out.

Coming late to the party but wanted to share my thoughts.

Agree with most of you who thought Rupert stealing the shoes was a complete HOOT. Though, truly, a good pair of gym shoes should have fetched way more than a pineapple. And the woman who traded her necklace for $10 worth of chicken. Argh. Why waste GOLD on something so disposable? And that one tribe who left with a wad of cash in hand? Stupid, stupid! Did NO ONE think of bug spray, sun screen, blankets or maybe even a cheap plastic tarp?

I would have negotiated the boat first, then used whatever was left (stolen shoes, gold, money, watches) to pick up the following in this order:

*tampons (sorry, mates, when you gotta menstruate, you gotta menstruate)
*kerosene and matches
*2 big pots
*water bucket
*big knife
*hatchet or machete
*hammer and a few pounds of nails
*fishing equipment (I would have probably gotten a fishing pole. Who knew a spear would be so handy?)
*wheat or rice or oatmeal
*blankets
*clothing for those who were underdressed
*plastic tarp
*duct tape (you can ALWAYS use duct tape)
*aluminum foil (you can ALWAYS use aluminum foil)
*sun screen
*bug spray (or, in lieu of this, mosquito netting)
*a freaking deck of cards!!
*a big jug of vino for morale
*the biggest bottle of Suave (or similar item) that I could find
*shoes for those who didn’t have them

I understand why they all panicked but they should have taken the time to get a list together so they didn’t miss anything essential.

Very enjoyable first show.

I agree with most of the items on your list but I definitely would have added some protein to the diet - a few dozen cans of potted meat or some dried salami or a dozen big jars of peanut butter. Virtually all of the past players have talked about the debilitating effects of protein starvation in the latter parts of the game. Granted, they seem to be doing okay on the fishing, but they certainly shouldn’t have planned on that.

And personally I thought Sandra did quite well in what she got for her necklace. She not only got all the chicken, she also took all of the cooking equipment. She might have done better in different circumstances, but under the less than ideal conditions she faced, I think she made a great deal.

I’m beginning to like Rupert a little more, and feel perhaps I was premature in my initial judgment. He seems dedicated, into the game, hardworking and resourceful. Part of what I don’t like about him, though, is his slovenliness, but that’s a minor complaint - go, Rupert!
Osten, Osten. what can I say. I thought for sure after watching the previews last week it was going to by Ryan who was whining to go home - what surprise. Osten, you are the biggest fucking crybaby, and you make me sick! I have ZERO respect for him now. Quitter. And not even because anyone is picking on him, but because the going gets tough for the team. Well, fine, take your little tush and go home, babycakes. Ryan definitely needed to go, at some point, but Osten should have been voted out this week.
There. I feel better. GAme IS getting better.

Oh, and David, Burnett is the guy/company who produces Survivor, right?

NOTE TO SELF: ALWAYS PREVIEW, ESPECIALLY WHEN POSTING SPOILERS!!!
