Sweat Bees

For the first time in many years, I’ve had sweat bees lighting on my arms this weekend. I love the little guys… so cute.

Do you have them at your place?

I grew up with them and hate them! They’re not cute and they’ll stay in one spot on your skin and sting when you try to brush them off.

Pics or it didn’t happen.

I’m sorry, that was rude. Just like to see what you’re talking about.

We had 'em where I grew up in Western PA. Where I am now, however (just north of Houston), we seem mainly to have giant red wasps that sound like a Huey coming in for a dust-off. “Cute” is not the first word that springs to mind.

Are those the same assholes that we have that are obsessed with toes? They don’t sting as much as bite toes. I hate them.

Hmmmm… not sure about toes. Though toes do sound like an easy target.

No offense taken. I’ll try to zap some photos of them soon. I’ve got lots to do outside this weekend; an opportunity to feed these bees.

I like to “enchant” a few of them to hover around my hand, and then gently move them en masse back and forth. Hours of entertainment, and it impresses the kids.

Once I figured out they don’t bite or sting, I became somewhat enamored of the little fellas.

What the hell is a sweat bee?

Sweat Bee.

We get them in the house this time of the year. I finally figured that they are small enough to fit into some tiny holes in the cement blocks of our house. They then find there way inside, and buzz around by various table lamps. The ones we get are iridescent green, and very pretty.

Now that you mention it, I haven’t seen those little guys around here in many years, and it’s not because I sweat less in the summer! I wonder what happened to those little icons of my childhood…

Its like me asking whatever happened to lightning bugs. There honestly used to be hundreds and hundreds, out every night for about 90 minutes after dark. Now if I see 5 all summer, its a lot.

Finally! One obnoxious insect that we don’t have in South Texas. Thank you for this.
