Talk about avoiding reality.

She’s not killing him, she’s letting him die!

Personally, I think mhendo did nothing wrong and Quasimodem should have been Warned, not just Mod Noted, for his personal threat of violence (especially if this is not the first such threat).

Thanks to Ambivalid for reminding me that some people would likely make fun of me for my comment, giving me the fortitude to come back in here and address it.

The thing you guys don’t seem to get is that I’m the one who actually treats people like people: taking into account someone’s strengths and weaknesses is part of treating them like a human being. Treating all people the same is actually mistreating the people who do not respond well to what you do. No human being treats everyone the same, and they shouldn’t. The goal is to treat people well.

I’m sorry that the person I’m attacking doesn’t always wind up being the only one annoyed by what I say, but I figure it’s really not that annoying to those people who actually treat people well. And I’m sure it gives the rest of you stuff to make fun of me for, which apparently is something that makes your day brighter.

No one will not ever get a pass from me for what mhendo did. He knew that Quasi wasn’t understanding what was going on. He decided to do what he could to make him feel bad anyway. That’s the mindset of a bully–take the person who is disadvantaged and single them out. He admitted that he was given pause before he did it, which means he knew it was wrong, but then he rationalized it away so he could do it anyways. The fact that he thinks what he did was right is the reason I felt the need to call him on his shit.

All I did was point out that one possible consequence of his bullying behavior is that Quasi’s life may be shortened, because he will no longer have the mental stimulation that this board provides him. It may not, of course, but sometimes you have to be a bit hyperbolic to get through people’s thick skulls.

Say what you want, but everyone who read that is going to remember what I said. And maybe one day, that means it will finally click.

Oops, in editing I actually left out something. If, after Quasi’s response, mhendo would have freaked out and apologized for making him so upset, or at least just stopped doing it, then I wouldn’t have come to the conclusion that his intent was to make him feel bad. I might have actually believed his rationalization that he was just trying to treat Quasi like everyone else, as stupid as that idea is.

And there’s a big difference between making an allowance for someone’s mental illness and coddling them or treating him like a baby. Everyone else who responded to Quasi negatively was perfectly fine, in my opinion, and you could hardly say they were coddling him.

Thats a horrible thing to say! How can you be so insensitive? There may be posters here who have suffered years of bullying because of having over-large craniums, and here you go opening old wounds, reminding them of the pain and suffering they have endured.

And not only that, but what about those poor unfortunates who have less intelligence than others? How do you think they feel about you calling them stupid?

Its a shame that you have so much contempt for your fellow man, that you denigrate so easily and spare no thoughts for their feelings whatsoever. It costs nothing to be nice, but obviously you do not care enough to spend even that.

The whiney, hysterics like BigTard, Oakminister and Tripolar are making me just vaguely nauseous.

Yes, it’s wonderful to have a housepet around, and I know you miss your housepet, but Quasi is an adult with dignity and intelligence, not a fucking animal or child who needs to be coddled.

Not too long ago, Quasi wrote

This is a man, not a goddamned pet you can keep around for your own amusement who has the self-awareness and intelligence (despite the confusion his dementia causes) to not only know that he’s embarrassing himself*, but that this isn’t the person he wants to be known as. Do you really think he enjoys “cringing” at what he wrote?

Read what he wrote “I sit here and cringe at my words”; “It bothers me, guys and ladies, it really does”. He was smart enough, and he had enough dignity and self-awareness, to leave when he was ready to go and before he said something he couldn’t take back.

Mhendo’s second post (the “stupid old douchebag” one) started with a nasty comment back to Quasi after Quasi said some pretty nasty stuff first, but…and this is key…he also spent like 10 lines rebutting Quasi; treated Quasi like an adult, who’s opinions were worth rebutting, not a child who gets patted on the head and told “Yes, yes, now run along. Your opinions are very cute, dear.” And unlike BigT, Quasi didn’t want special treatment–he asked for help when needed, but he didn’t want the board wrapped in cotton to ‘protect’ him.

Quasi showed class in how he left (temporarily or permanently) with his head held high. His “supporters” would do well to try to support his decision and emulate him instead of running around shrieking and wailing.
*If only BigT had half that self-awareness.

BigT, if anything ever unpleasant ever happens to me, for the love of your deity of choice, don’t defend me. I can’t imagine how hard it must be having to deal with irreversible, life changing, debilitating issues, with you making it ten times worse.

In other words, shut the fuck up, you patronising, ignorant, dehumanising cock.

If only he could get laid.

I’ve been on the internet since 1998, and I’ve been saying this ever since. Mentally ill people shouldn’t be using the internet as therapy without supervision, and if they do they deserve whatever they get.

So I was kumbayahing all over the Google Doodle thread, a little confused as to why some people think it’s completely out of bounds to try to be understanding, instead of bashing someone struggling with dementia as “stupid” and “old” (the douchebag part doesn’t faze me), but BigT, you need to pump your brakes here. Nobody is dying because people were mean on the internet.

You’re right that **Ambivalid **is a douche though, but everybody already knew that.

You want to point out anywhere that I recommended coddling Quasi in any way? Either that or shut the fuck up.

Every time you post in this thread, I picture Bruce Banner, mid-Hulkening. Fists clenched, veins throbbing, seconds away from snapping the keyboard in half and rampaging around. TriPolar SMASH!!

I don’t object to people being understanding what annoyed me was the attitude that because someone else decided that treat Quasi as he asked to be treated looked different than what they would do it was not just wrong it was horrible, evil and now apparently murderous.

Oddly this thread has convinced me that the posters who initially annoyed me enough to post it are pretty well meaning but that there are a few others who seriously need to get a grip on reality.

SERIOUSLY? My god man that’s just fucked up. I know you later semi recanted but Fenris is right, Q is not a god damned pet for you to pat on the head. He KNOWS when he screws up and it causes him anxiety and upset. Pats on the head aren’t going to fix it.

A BIT hyperbolic? You practically accused him of killing the guy! (And Qadgop, a fucking doctor, pointed out that your theory is bullshit) It’s NOT going to “shorten his life”. The guy has other hobbies, he has family, he has friends, he’s not going to die if he doesn’t post on the Dope.

Once again: Quasi is NOT mentally ill. Alzheimers is a neurological, not a psychological disorder.

And yes, you DID treat him like a child. Referring to him as a “docile old man”? And the only thing that “clicks” is that you’re annoying, sanctimonious, and seem to think that human beings are supposed to be all sunshine and roses. Well, we’re not. People “make fun of” you because you’re an annoying turd, who’s always going around lecturing them to, “be nice.” Guess what? Sometimes, niceness isn’t well, “nice”. Sometimes you CAN “kill 'em with kindness.”

“If you haven’t got anything good to say about anybody, come sit next to me.” - Alice Roosevelt Longworth

He certainly is mentally ill if his mind is affected by a disease. I’m not sure why you think it makes a difference whether the source of the illness is psychological or not: he’s aware of it and he is under a doctor’s care. monstro had a really good thread on the stigmatization of mental illness not long ago. Give it a read. Anyway, there are undoubtedly psychological components to the neurological condition; he himself was bothered and upset by some of his posts, as quoted upthread.

BigT, at issue is whether we excuse all of his behaviour with a condescending “poor sick man doesn’t know any better,” pretend he’s just like everyone else and just like he used to be, or some sensible middle ground such as calling him out on bad behaviour but with some sensitivity based on an awareness of the situation. I think for the most part people have been on that middle ground. The board as a whole is trying to accomodate him, but if / when it becomes impossible, his posting privileges will be revoked.

Right here, you tiny-dicked, rage-monkey

You’d prefer people just “ignore” Quasi, you’d prefer him to make posts into a vast, deafening silence with no response or challenge, than to have his opinions treated like they were worthy of discussion. And the “piling on” was roughly 1 (one) guy engaging him and treating his arguments as worthwhile plus a bunch of people arguing about a (granted, nasty) three-word insult.

Given that Quasi was already concerned that his posts weren’t getting through, were being monitored, etc (He recently had a thread asking if the mods were pre-examining his posts), I think doing him the courtesy of debating his arguments and treating him like he’s here and a participant is better than “ignoring”.

Dr Drake, yes, he is having problems mentally, but there’s still a difference between neurological disorders and psychiatric ones. And this isn’t about the stigma of mental illness – I have OCD myself. (And I not only read monstro’s thread, but I believe I participated as well)
Fenris, Quasi once got angry when he thought that people might not be taking what he said seriously, (when he was angry at Twickster once, in ATMB), and that people WERE treating him different:

Like I said before, I KNEW this was going to happen sooner or later, and that people were going to freak out.

Wow, Thanks! That’s just what I was going for.

By wishing Alzheimer’s on posters who disagree with you and posting that you’ll gloat at their spiral into senility. Makes sense, Good Guy BigT.

To be fair, that wasn’t BigT – that was TriPolar.
