Die sooner. It’s an important detail, otherwise it just sounds ridiculous.
mhendo calls Palo Verde stupid and a douchebag.
mhendo calls Captain Midnight a complete fucking dunce.
mhendo calls Clothahump stupid, a douchebag, and a craven coward.
That’s only searching for threads that have both “stupid” and “douchebag” in them. I didn’t even look for threads where he called people a dunce, an idiot, a moron, or any of the other synonyms for “stupid,” which apparently according to you is a devastating secret weapon.
Thank god the soviets never got ahold of it!

My two cents, for whatever it’s worth.
My most recent interaction here was with Quasi and his team of rescuers. I had remarked on something, he commented, and I referenced an old post of his where he’d had a similar experience as mine–in the past. I had never had an interaction with him up until that point, and knew nothing about him. In fact, the only reason I knew of the post at all was because I did a google search (yes–the search engine, not a search here) with two words, and his post showed up. So I replied to his post, in my thread. Immediately, I was pounced upon, for citing that post, being insensitive to him, whatever. I apologized, saying “if I had known I wouldn’t have said anything.” Interestingly, I don’t recall him being as upset with me as his spokespeople seemed to be. And I seemed to work harder at apologizing to them, than to him.
Then I started thinking about that. And truth be told, I am somewhat conflicted. What was I apologizing for? How was I supposed to know? I’d never even heard of this board or these people until a couple months ago. And if I’d known of his diagnosis, what would or “should” have been different? Maybe I would have been sensitive–like having a context to understand it, but does that make his post less relevant? Years ago, kids were separated in schools; now they are not. Accommodations are one thing (like a blind child needing a tutor to read off the board)–but there are still general standards and general social norms and laws and expectations (the blind child can’t shoot up the school). And yes these rules apply to mental dx. And honestly, we can’t have it both ways. Where does it stop?
Since I joined here, I had a breast cancer scare and had to put my cat down whom I have had for 17 years. Does that mean those subjects are off limits and everyone has to be hypersensitive around me? No. More so, is it fair for me to attack new posters who may not know my situation? I get that the comparison is weak, but it’s the political correctness that is silly. And what is sillier is the idea of people speaking on others’ behalf. “Shhhh don’t say you hate cats! Her cat died 3 years ago!” Again, I have a brief history here, but I have yet to see one post that references Quasi asking others to treat him as the delicate orchid some people make him out to be–in fact, it seems to be just the opposite. So using my school example, if there isn’t a modification available in this setting (i dont know what that would be like) then maybe it isn’t an appropriate context for him. Not everything is for everyone, and that has nothing to do with diagnosis or ability or any one thing. I have asthma. I once lived in an apartment that allowed my neighbor to smoke. I had a choice; I moved. It all comes down to cost-benefit analysis.
I think that there are legitimate concerns (eg his financial safety/privacy whatever) about Quasi on the Internet that were expressed here. However, I also think that there are assumptions being made here that he’s not cared for/monitored in real life and also that it is the responsibility of anyone in this community to do so. If anyone here has a general concern about him, contact the people he coexists with in real life. They can make the difference; you can’t. And as for expecting the culture to walk on eggshells for one person? That is more marginalizing than anything. And yes, I can cite research on this–marginalization is more prejudiced than integration. Speaking for those YOU feel can’t speak for themselves is so condescending–if you want to make a difference, ask that person to speak. If they don’t or can’t or WANT your help then teach that person how to speak for themselves and move on.
/Back to lurking.
They spoke Russian. Americans are impervious to foreign languages. They would have had to know to use English for us to understand and die prematurely. They weren’t that smart. That’s why they went down earlier than they otherwise would.
Damn straight and I am disappointed that Google didn’t do a doodle for it. Those commi bastards.
Best so far
“Hitting below the belt” based on Quasi’s real life situation? Seriously? You realize that the insult in question is “stupid old douchebag,” right? Unless it’s your contention that Quasi legitimately is unintelligent, elderly, or a plastic pouch used to irrigate one’s vagina, none of those things reference his real life situation. Now, if someone had called him senile, foggy-brained, or demented, or made some kind of crack about being surprised Quasi could remember it was D-Day or something similar, that would be hand-selecting a phrase based on his real life. “Stupid old douchebag” is just garden-variety Pit language.
We should be careful, that could end up on the banned list as well.
Combining stupid and old in that way implies exactly those things if you have personal knowledge of his health situation, even though he is neither of the two. I have no problem with douchebag. I have already said what I think and nobody is going to change their minds on the issue one way or the other. This extended drama only serves to keep reopening old wounds so I won’t be posting to this thread again unless there is some turn of events that warrants it.
I think that’s for the best; we’re at our quota for smarmy stupidity already.
Already?!?! We need an admin to increase that.
As to the subject at hand, if** mhendo **did not know that **Quasi **had gone on sabbatical, then I have no problem with him. It was the idea of continuing to fling insults when **Quasi **had no way to respond that bothered me. And I’m glad he didn’t respond because I don’t want to see him get banned. He just got emotionally charged about the subject, which may only be an indirect result of his medical issue. His life has to be pretty stressful in general, and I give him a break and wait for him to cool down, just as I would for any other Doper in similar circumstances. And like mhendo, sometimes I don’t know the circumstances.
No, it doesn’t. Dementia doesn’t make you stupid. It makes you forgetful, it makes you vague, it makes you confused, it might make you delusional or arguably even crazy (the good lord knows my grandma certainly sounds nutty when she gets on a tear about how my aunt and a goon squad drugged and kidnapped her), but it doesn’t make you stupid.
And if you’re so okay with douchebag, how come you were suggesting asshat, shitstain, and dickhead in your list of more acceptable insults? Those aren’t generally considered alternatives to stupid or old, they’re alternatives to douchebag.
Then why are you still here?
Ohh ohhh…buuurrrnnnnn…
This isn’t representative of the situation for all schizophrenics. I know a schizophrenic personally that takes any criticism (real or perceived) as evidence of conspiracy.
Stupidity is defined by wikipedia as “a lack of intelligence, understanding, reason, wit, or sense”. While I don’t take a conventional view of intelligence, I assume that a demonstration of intelligence requires certain structures in the brain. Alzheimers is a degenerative disease affecting the brain and is characterised by difficulties in memory which can be demonstrated by a battery of cognitive tests. In the final stages of the illness, the brain is far less active than at peak capacity.

How cute, it thinks it’s people.
And that person should not participate in this message board. If you do participate in this message board, it is expected that you are capable of comprehending what’s going on and following the rules. If you can’t conform your behavior to our extremely lenient standards, you will be banned, not hugged and patted upon the head.
My point was not that all schizophrenics can participate on this board. Its that mental disease is not a get-out-of-asshole-free card.
You mean like if another opinion pops into that teeny brain of yours? If you had posted this on page 1 it wouldn’t have come so douche-y but to to seagull this turd in now is priceless.
