Out of nowhere, I get an e-mail yesterday. It is from a guy who I played with when I was a little kid in Hollis, Queens! A guy who has not seen me since I was, oh, 10 years old or something!
Chatting with him on ICQ was a total trip. I have a friend now who I work with who I have known since I was 16 (making that a 14 year relationship), and that is interesting enough, but here is someoone who has no idea what I’ve been up to for a hugely substantial part of my life, now me of his.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to getting to know Nicky (I feel it right to just call him Nick now!) again, and I wonder - has anyone here ever got to know someone you lost touch with so long ago? Not just in terms of time, but in terms of the age you lost touch?
I mean, running into someone at 55 you last saw when you were 35 is something, but 10-30 is something else entirely…
I, too, got an e-mail yesterday from someone I had not heard from in quite some time. Not as much of a time lapse as Satan’s occurrence, but delightful just the same.
It was from one of the other students who was in my laboratory at graduate school. We were working on the same program (different projects) and were good friends. When she got married to another person in the lab, we sortof lost touch. This was about 4 years ago.
After yesterday’s e-mail, we talked on the phone for about 2 hours. It was great to catch up with both of them, especially because I found out they are only a couple of hour away, and that his parents and sister live about 2 miles fom me.
