Recently, the Karachi version of Carrom, a game called Duboo, has become popular on one of the Chinese short video streaming sites, Kuaishou. It’s obviously based on the Indian game of Carrom, but instead of being played on a wooden board, it’s played on a highly polished stone table. Here is a YouTube video of one match..

Questions:

  1. Have you ever heard of this game before?
  2. Have you ever played it?
  3. The wooden rails, as seen in the linked video, have what are essentially diamonds or spots akin to those used in 3-Cushion Billiards. Since the board is a square, how would one use those to one’s advantange; what are the formulas involved?
  4. The board in the video looks to me like it could easily be 5 or 6 feet on a side. How would the size of the board change the dynamics of play compared to India’s Carrom?
  5. The striker in Duboo is a pretty large circular piece of plastic and is often used for combination or repeat strikes on target pieces in the corners. Again, how does that change the dynamics of play compared to India’s Carrom?
  6. Is this game present in Pakistani communities in other countries?
