I use Tapatalk on my mobile to access the boards. But it’s not a perfect interface so sometimes I want to access through my mobile browser.
But every damn time I do that, I get a nag reminding me that I could use Tapatalk, even when I have come to the web version directly from Tapatalk.
And if I mistakenly hit “okay”—which my fingers are conditioned to do—instead of “cancel”—which is counterintuitive—I have to take a trip via the App Store.
I’m almost certain this is an iOS issue and not a SDMB issue. I get that on my iPhone about half the time when I access the boards that way and I don’t have Tapatalk and have never used it in my life.
No, this is coming from the SDMB. Earlier versions of Tapatalk automatically inserted a call to a Javascript function in your style sheet that pops up that window. It only gets called when it detects you’re on a mobile device and not logged in, I believe.
The remedy is to update Tapatalk to the latest version and then remove that old line from the default style (just search in templates for tapatalkdetect.js in the AdminCP). I believe the new version still has some sort of “hey, do you want to use Tapatalk??” message, but I think it’s easier to disable / ignore.
Are you folks still getting this? Does it happen every time you use Tapatalk? Is it happening to everyone that accesses on a mobile device?
Trying to figure out how pervasive this is. I realize it’s annoying, especially to those who have never used Tapatalk ever and don’t intend to and we’re sorry for that; ideally you shouldn’t be getting nag screens at all, anybody.
It happens every time I freshly access the boards through Safari on my iPhone. Always. And it has happened ever since The SDMB joined up with Tapatalk.
Giraffe’s assertion (relevant bit quoted below) lines up with my experience. I don’t use TapaTalk, and since I usually just stay signed in on my mobile’s browser, I hardly ever see it. The only times I might see it is if I switch to a different browser, clear my cookies, or “Clear Data” through Android for my browser app.
If someone were to never login (or always logout) and/or have cookies turned off (or set to clear after exit) in their browser, that would probably cause them to constantly see the popup.
Also, there are various cleanup/security/privacy/performance/task-killer apps that might be automatically deleting people’s cookies, which would have the same effect.
I have the issue on an Android phone. Not with this board, but on some others if there’s a link to another post on the board my phone attempts to use the browser and I get the TapaTalk prompt. If I accept the prompt I get taken to the basic forums, not the post that was linked.
I haven’t really seen this problem on my Kindle Fire with Tapatalk installed. The only time I do see it is when I’m asked, for some reason, if I want to open in Silk, Firefox, Chrome, or Tapatalk.
I really should just delete it off my Fire as I don’t see what the point of Tapatalk is.
FYI, I just got the Tapatalk nag on my laptop, running Windows 7/Chrome.
I pay for a membership to not get ads (and to support the system…), so I hope this is somehow my fault and not SDMB doing it.
