One of which was closed with a redirect. TubaDiva: “I’ll ask xash,” and “they told me it only happens once,” and that was that.
Obviously, since I’ve OP’d this before, it burns my butt–on all the sites where it rears its head, but more so here because I open SD many times a day and, moreover, because I respect the care and dialogue it has with its community, shown most clearly, perhaps, with its respect to board maintenance and security. And I can actually discuss it here with normal human beings.
Rather than resurrect, I OP here with a different base thought.
Does the Tapatalk obnoxiousness get special dispensation from Jerry and the Cherubim and Seraphim who protect this Demi-Eden? Why is it not extirpated root and branch like the other malware?
Is it that SD hasn’t done so because it has defeated the technical skill of the webmasters?
Honestly, if that’s the case, or, if it could be done, that you just don’t have enough budget and manpower to tackle it, that would be interesting to know, and I’d love you just the same.
Or do you Just Not Care?
I’d still love you, recognizing that in relationships you take the good with the bad.
Speaking personally, it’s not that I Just Don’t Care, it’s that I don’t have the personal ability to fix this to your satisfaction.
I’ll see what else I can get happening upstairs, but I personally am not doing this to you. The Straight Dope is not doing this to you. TAPATALK is doing this to you and we don’t have any control over it.
(For those helpful Dopers who have previously written and given me instructions on how to modify that setting on this side of the Tapatalk app, I’ve tried that and it didn’t work/didn’t help. This is an older version of Tapatalk that is not responsive to anything I’ve attempted through the access that I have. I am also not able to upgrade Tapatalk to make it more responsive.)
The only real option is having Tapatalk removed from the site. It’s a third party app that no one in management approved in the first place. I figured it was best to leave it because people use it and while having that popup is annoying, it’s better than people not having access to it at all.
That’s why we’re in the place we’re in with this right now – as annoying as those popups are – especially to IOS users who don’t even USE Tapatalk – the benefit it provides other users is enough that we moderators ask for your consideration on behalf of your fellow Dopers.
So, does logging in, and *staying *logged in, not work for you to make the popup go away? Like I said in another thread, I see it sometimes on my Android, but it’s only when I use a browser that doesn’t have the cookie that saves my logged-in status. I assume that same cookie (or maybe another one) saves the fact that you’ve been presented the popup and declined.
It seems that it keeps pestering you because it doesn’t know that its already showed you the popup previously. Do you not have cookies enabled, or something? Or, do you never stay logged in?
I have requested that Tapatalk be looked at and updated if possible, with the hope that in so doing we can better control what Tapatalk sends out to people, especially those who are never going to use the app.
Yes, PLEASE do not get rid of Tapatalk. ~95% of my time here is through Tapatalk on my phone (the older version of VBulletin, rendered in mobile IE is practically unreadable because the posts are in exTREMEly tiny font (and for some reason, quoted text is REALLY REALLY BIG)).
Please note that simply updating Tapatalk is not enough, you have to also remove the script call to tapatalkdetect.js in your style sheet. It’s easy to do, especially you guys only have the one style, but it requires admin access.
