Tapatalk popup nags, other problems

I’m getting nearly constant popup nags about the Tapatalk app. Every time I change screens. And I was logged out after a day, even though I checked the box to keep me logged in.

My problem, or the board’s?

Samsung tablet, latest Android 9 update.

We have just had a board outage that lasted most of the day, not sure how that would have affected you being able to stay on the board but it’s a good bet that had something to do with it.

As to the Tapatalk message, I don’t think that’s us. Is anyone else seeing this?

I definitely saw a Tapatalk popup, which went away after I disabled all JavaScript.

Who still uses Tapatalk on this site? Is it actually useful or is it just an artifact of a previous time?

The tapatalk nag and you being logged out both have something in common. There is a cookie that gets set to keep you logged in. There is another cookie that gets set that should prevent the tapatalk nag from appearing more than once. The tapatalk cookie expires after a few months IIRC, so you’ll see the nag again eventually, but you shouldn’t see it all the time. Maybe a couple of times per year should be it.

Since you have both of these issues, it kinda points to a cookie issue on your end, though with all of the board issues lately I suppose something could have been corrupted on the server side as well.

Did you install or enable anything on your tablet that would block or clear out cookies?

Disabling scripts is kind of the Nuke It From Orbit approach. It works, but again, if cookies are working, you should only get the nag once. I also vaguely remember that disabling scripts globally breaks a couple of minor things here on the SDMB, though at this point I don’t recall off the top of my head what they were.

Tapatalk is essential for me. I wouldn’t use this site without it.

Tapatalks ads are very annoying. They mess up part of the screen and make posts hard to read.

I’m experimenting with using my browser again. I may soon remove Tapatalk from my phone.

No, and the problem started just before the outage, and hasn’t come back since the outage, so it was probably related to it.

Thanks.

I used Tapatalk when the ads on this site were so bad that it was unusable. Ads blocking half the screen, random PDFs getting downloaded to my phone, etc… that’s improved and I no longer feel the need to use Tapatalk.

Why would it be an artifact? Is there some other phone app for message boards that left Tapatalk in the dust?

Safari? Chrome?

It’s doing it again: Tapatalk nag every time I change screens and frequent logouts.

How can I tell if it’s a problem with my browser’s handling of cookies? (Latest version of Firefox for Android.)

Or is the server acting up again? Is there another outage in the offing?

Okay, I rebooted the tablet, and that seems to have fixed the problem. For now. Sorry for the false alarm.

According to Chicago Sun-Times management, when they renovated the website a little ways back the functionality of the site was designed so that it would render correctly for most all users whatever the device – computer, tablet, phone. I was told you wouldn’t need Tapatalk.

I dislike trying to read the Dope on my phone as I have a small screen and big fumbly fingers so I can’t really verify this situation to my own satisfaction.

However I would tend to leave it in case there is someone that truly needs it unless it becomes such a huge issue that we would have to do something.
