Tapestry

Listening to NPR Morning Edition this AM, they did a bit on [RUL=“http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/me/20000824.me.15.rmm”]Carole King’s breakthrough album Tapestry. Maybe the popularity of that classic album will be something youngsters will scratch their heads over but if they give it a listen they may feel differently.

In a day of interchangeable Jennifer/Christina/Brittney/Mariah pop bimbos it’s refreshing to listen to a real songwriter that sings with heart. Every song on that album was a winner and a ton of them were monster hits. The album was on Billboard’s chart for five years. They don’t make 'em that way any more.

I’m tempted to get the tribute album but not sure if I can bear Celine Dion singing Aretha Franklin’s trademark Natural Woman. Aretha’s on the album, but on a different track.

I’ve said this before, but in my opinion:

Carole King = excellent songwriter, horrible singer

The sound of her voice is not pretty. In fact, it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard. Her songs are done justice by people like Aretha Franklin.

Ah, memories . . . my dad had the Tapestry album, and one of my hobbies as a child was going through and listening to dad’s record collection. What a great, great album. I have to disagree with boli, though–I think Carole’s versions, at least, of “I Feel the Earth Move” and “It’s Too Late” are the definitive versions, IMHO.
