The recent death of Johnny Sheffield reminded me of a commercial I saw on TV just once. I want to say it was around 1975. I don’t remember much about it, other than it depicted a young boy wearing a brown vinyl loincloth with a toy knife that may have been on a belt. Some sort of ‘Tarzan play kit’/‘Tarzan costume’.
Yeah, even as an adolescent I saw something wrong with a kid going out dressed just in a loincloth.
It couldn’t have been much before 1975, because I saw the same ad. As I recall it ran on one or more of the “local” (not network-affiliated) channels in the Los Angeles area, during daytime programming. The address for ordering may have even been in Tarzana, and if it wasn’t, it should have been.
I thought the Tarzan loincloth, or whatever they called it, looked neat, but then I was just a little kid. A swimsuit with a dagger! There was definitely a pair of trunks or something under the flap on the screen, though.
