Technical question - router / home network related

Here’s the deal. I noticed on Facebook, the pictures frequently don’t download when I open a new page. My computer is currently on a wireless home network that in all other respects, works perfectly normally.

Is there any network settings or whatnot that I should check that would cause this?

Assuming it has ever worked properly, I can’t imagine what network settings would block images only. Data is data; it’s all wrapped in a data packet and sent to the application layer.

Check your browser’s settings.

For what?

And what’s strange is that it’s inconsistant (like 1/2 the pictures load and then stop), only on Facebook and only on my home PC where this happens.

Well, I was specifically thinking of two things: (1) Firefox has an “only accept images from originating server” setting and (2) adblock software. I don’t go to Facebook, so I can’t comment on how they structure their webpages. In addition, you’ve not said what OS, browser, etc. you use, so it’s difficult to get into anything more specific.

Now, that is strange, and makes the browser settings less suspect. Have you ever had it work properly on this PC? Have you tried hooking the PC up to either (1) a wired connection or (2) a different network?

I don’t know how it is done, but once I tried to download an image (a stunningly beautiful one by a real artist) and all I was able to get was a link to that image. I imagine that the web page I was looking at had only a link at that point, but some command told it to load that link. You would need a real web programmer (I don’t even have a home page, so little do I know about it) to explain how this could be done.

Just a WAG.

Try to load the page on a different browser and then report back.

FWIW, I use Facebook on a computer that’s wired to a wireless router, and the same thing happens to me about 50% of the time that I click on a photo. I use Firefox 3 with AdBlock. Usually reloading the page fixes it.
