Many images are not being displayed on Facebook. I tried clearing cache and logging in again, but I’m still getting ‘broken images’. There are notices like ‘Image may contain: One or more people, people sitting, and text’, or ‘Image may contain: outdoor’, or ‘Image may contain: 7 people, people smiling, people standing and outdoor’.
I’m using OS X El Capitan version 10.11.6, and Safari version 11.1.2. Is there something going on with Facebook? Or did my FB settings somehow get change; and if so, how do I reset them? Or is it my computer or browser?
I have nothing much to say, except I noticed the same thing this morning too. I reset the wifi a couple times thinking I was getting a bad connection, but some pictures display just fine, and fast, same with videos. But a lot of pictures are just showing me the circle arrow to reload, but it never reloads.
Could be a simple glitch, but I suspect it’s yet another example of a technology entity needlessly screwing with their interface.
A few months ago I noticed FB had changed something resulting in a double-space after every word I type in a comment (on my iPad, in Safari). That persists to this day.
I further suspect they either do this nonsense intentionally or just don’t care, because they’re desperate for us to use their app rather than a web browser.
Computer users are being continuously shut out of online shit as it is endlessly “optimized” for mobile devices. I guess that’s OK for people who prefer to interface with the internet using a tiny screen and two thumbs, but my preference is for a real screen, a real mouse, and a real keyboard, and I hate that computer users are seemingly being hung out to dry at the expense of mobile devices.
Jesus you guys it’s not a conspiracy. Their content delivery network seems to be having a problem delivering content. It happens. I see missing images on mobile and desktop.
Yeah, same issue here, both on mobile and desktop. I was trying to send a friend a picture via Facebook messenger about four hours ago, and no dice, whether sending from mobile or desktop. Also, getting lots of missing photos in my feeds on both mobile and desktop, app and website interfaces. So, yeah, no nothing to do with shuffling people off to the mobile app.
But I also think there’s ample evidence that FB and the various other tech superpowers aren’t exactly hitting the ball out of the park when it comes to doing things in their users’ best interests. So I stand by the second part of my remark that it’s possible they’re in favor of anything that drives people toward their preferred method of delivery, which I’m guessing is their app.
As the expression goes, it’s often a good bet to attribute problems to carelessness rather than bad intentions. But the tech industry continually convinces me to extend this benefit of the doubt with caution. FB has tinkered with their interface often enough that it has fouled up my experience on multiple platforms multiple times, they seem determined to force certain choices (why do we always have to select “most recent”? Why is it so important to them to default to “top stories”?), etc.
Then there’s Apple, whose updates keep re-arranging interfaces that were fine the way they were, and with no real possibility to return. Same for Windows and MS products, along with their wanting to turn everything into a subscription service.
I’m a pretty liberal guy politically, but I turn into William F. Fucking Buckley when it comes to tech stuff. While I’m not exactly standing athwart technical advancement yelling “Stop!”, I do want more reasoned and purposeful changes.
So when I see an issue like today, which could very well be a benign glitch, I am forced to wonder if that glitch would even exist were it not for a mindset in the tech industry that seems to encourage change for the sake of change.
