I tried watching this a few times, but it never grew on me. I sometimes sit through the last few minutes waiting for Justice League, and one such occurence, uh, occurred last week. The Teen Heroes were being held captive by an Evil Robot, and their Cyborg Buddy was going to rescue them. The EVil Robot and the Cyborg Buddy battled fiercely and, at one point, they paused for some taunting. And the Evil Robot was panting. What? Robots get tired? They breathe? I am not the target audience for this show, so I don’t get it, but that just seemed way too silly for anyone to take. Is there an explanation that I didn’t see, since I missed the first 20 minutes of the episode?
The Cyborg Buddy prevailed, of course, since while his still-human side meant he would be weaker than the Evil Robot, it meant he had reserves of spirit to help maintain his commitment to the cause, even while his mechanical reserves were failing.
Parts of the show are very silly. When I first watched it, I didn’t like the exaggerated cartoon-ey style, with the wierd facial expressions, and people growing huge when they yell/fight, etc… But something compelled me to watch more episodes. Now I love the show. I love the fact that it’s on every night on CN. I love the exaggerated expressions and the cartoon-ey bits. I’m not 100% sure why…I think it’s because I enjoy the characters, but the show really grew on me, and it grew on me fast.
It’s surely not for everyone, but I get much enjoyment from it. And the theme song! Who else sings along with the theme song and dances in their living room?..You can admit it…Anyone?.. Have I said too much?
My impression of the show is that it’s a mix of comic-booky story lines with anime style animation. I’ve never been much interested in anime, so there you go.
Maybe it’s internal combustion? (I think Harry Harrison had a coal-burning robot in one of his books once.)
What I want to know is how come all the damn re-runs? They seem to show the same few TT episodes all the time. I thought they had a new season, but they showed about five new ones and that was it. It doesn’t make sense to show the cartoon every night if you only have 20 or so episodes.
And how sad is it that the n-teenth rerun of a TT episode is * still * the best TV watching option most nights?
There have only been two seasons so far, for a total of 30 or 40 episodes. The 10PM showing tends to loop between both seasons (I’m pretty sure the inside-Raven’s-head episode from S1 that I keep missing is on tonight) while the 6:30PM episode limits itself more or less to S2. And apparently someone at Cartoon Network really likes the Mad Mod episode, because it’s on at least once a week.
Pretty sad. On my list the top program of the night is usually a two-way contest between the TT rerun on Cartoon Network and the TNG reruns on Spike TV.
Now the theme song is stuck in my head. (I do like the version with Japanese lyrics, even though I can’t understand a bit of it.)
It’s silly, yes, but that’s a hefty part of its appeal. Fun stuff. I watch it. As with so many shows, I think the funniest lines are the ones deadpanned by (in this case) Raven. Just like Worf always got the best lines, Raven seems to in this show.
we haven’t got the series yet on this side of the world, but it’s due to start this sunday (woohoo!). I’m eagerly awaiting it, any DCU cartoons are goodness in my book.
Bosda does Starfire’s hair do that flaming trail thing is does in the comics? I like Starfire goofy smiley.
… and then I got a call from a couple friends to go see Spiderman 2 and forgot to set my VCR :smack: Goddamnit.
As for Starfire’s hair, they throw comic book references in from time to time (along with references to other things). In the ep about Cyborg’s car (I think) the music blasting from his stereo blows Starfire’s hair into its comic-book style until she shakes it back into its normal cartoon style.
sorry for the tardy response, but I gotta say, NQAY, that is SO DAMN COOL!
I saw the first(?) episode yesterday* and it was pretty damn cool. Cyborg quit the team and they fought Cinderblock and some sleeping guy (‘I’m only human when I’m asleep’ -he’s from the comics isn’t he? I recall a character who had to be kept alseep lest he bring some terrible destruction on the world. Or am I misremembering).
I’m eager to see more, cos even though the treatment of TeenTitans is less canon than the other DCU cartoons, it’s still buckets of fun.
*I say first, cos it was the first ep to show here, I don’t know if it was actually the first in the series. Anyone?
Nothing odd about it. While there’s plenty in the Justice League cartoon for adults to enjoy, Teen Titans is entirely for children. Not that there’s anything necessarily wrong with that - I watch plenty of children’s cartoons, and I’ve caught Teen Titans on occasion (thought I don’t go out of my way for it). It’s just very audience-limiting.
