I regularly give other MMOs a spin and in the last 5 years not a one compares to EVE.
To some extent it is apples and oranges but I really think EVE is the thinking person’s game. WoW is fine and fun and certainly requires less brain effort which is attractive. But if you want depth then nothing comes close to EVE.
I really think the new people here should form their own SDMB corp and have at it. EVE rewards self-fulfillment. Rewards charting your own course. If you need hand holding find another game.
Yeah…I have heard many similar stories. I have also heard stories where a good FC rallied people to kill a carrier.
But then that is partly what FW is about. A stepping stone into PvP. Good FCs will rise to the top and bad ones will drop off and the journey makes for a lot of fun.
I really want to do FW but the faction hits which, when gone far enough, are too much and unrecoverable. My primary style in EVE is as an industrialist and participating in FW would gimp my ability to do that too much.
You know what the most frustrating thing about this is for me? I completely agree with you. I think it’s the best damn MMO out there. I heartily recommend it to anyone who asks about it. It’s even got a native Linux client so I don’t have to screw with Crossover or Cedega to run it.
…And I just don’t have any interest in playing. Not a bit. Couldn’t tell you why. It baffles me too.
Three of 'em, even.
Although, to be honest I think that has a lot to do with the nature of the factions. Caldari is huge because there are many, many Caldari players. From what I’ve heard, many of them are simply taking their PvE ships (Caracals, Drakes and Ravens) out and PvP’ing with them. A big ol’ blob of cruise missile launching Ravens will put a carrier down, even if they’re noobs.
What’s interesting is that the (ex-MDK) CEO of the corp I’ve just joined (after the debacle that was BRUCE) is routinely getting anywhere from half a dozen kills on up, per day, with a very simple sniper setup. I need to hop in a Muninn soon to get in on some of that killmail whorage.
I can see that… but by the same token, it’s also a way for folks who’re tired of 0.0 games to come back and get some actual pew pew. Some very, very good corps have signed up for FW too, although no names stand out in my memory at present.
But yeah, hopefully this’ll get more people into PvP and fewer people whining about how someone was a big ol’ meany and shot at them in lowsec.
Yeah… which brings us back to our earlier discussion about alts and skilling up
My main is hardly ever in Empire anymore these days, as I’ve got a hauler alt and my “main alt” is skilling up to be able to run lvl 4’s, and already has a vibrant datacore harvesting business going. I didn’t really mind signing him up with the Gallente militia. Although, tbh, I might move on over to the Minmatar faction so that I can start earning LP’s which are much more useful (Republic MWD’s FTW!) Then again, I’m really only in it for the free war decs and multitude of targets, I don’t expect that I’ll ever run any plexes or fight for any bunkers.
From what I’ve seen, FW really is worth it. You might want to consider rolling an Achura alt so you can get in on the pew pew.
Well…my main is ranked on In-EVE at something like 1050. I could easily pop into the top 1000 if I focused on my faster training skills (last few months I have been on my slower shooty skills). That puts me in the top 0.5% of EVE players. He has excellent pew pew skills. I WANT to use him and not wait to train an ALT for a few months.
Thing is our industrial efforts are extensive. We burn through 10 billion ISK/week in mats/comps. I have a hauler 2nd account and she is ace in that role. She is also my Trade ALT. But it really takes both of us (as well as my corp mates) to handle all we do.
My problem with FW is not FW itself. It is the inability to recover from faction loss. Once too low you are screwed. There is no way to work your way back into their good graces. I would not expect it to be easy to regain standing (it shouldn’t be) but not impossible as it stands now. Gallente already really dislike me (yeah…I know I am Gallente…go figure). Locking myself out of Min/Gal space is too much to contemplate without a means to fix it.
And as to Caldari outnumbering everyone else they do. But realize that Amarr are Caldari allies and Amarr are the smallest of the lot. Someone posted some numbers and it is not so lopsided when taken together.
I certainly am not answering for you but I have a guess.
EVE has so much depth and possibilities that it can feel more like work than a game.
Back in the Great Northern War I was a Director in the largest (by player count) corp in EVE. It was, frankly, a job. I got burned out as did my CEO and a few other people (I also had real life issues that year).
I came back a year later and by pure chance so had my former CEO at nearly the same time (she had had very serious RL issues too). She, myself and a few other decided we did not want the headache and formed our carebear corp.
I am not saying our way of playing is how to go by any means. Just saying that EVE can actually seem more a job than a game (you should see our spreadsheets…waaay more complex than anything I do for work).
That, understandably, turns a lot of people off. However, it also means (I think) that you get a FAR better than average crowd in EVE. I login more for the people than the game. While I have never met most of the people there in person I know if I ever travel to Iceland, Great Britain, Sweden, Germany, Norway, Jordan, Australia and a few other places there are people there who would meet me at the airport and take me for a drink at the least.
In the end EVE is what YOU make of it. If you want a simple game to pass an hour for fun WoW and some others may be more your speed. If you want something with a bit more meat than EVE is hands down the best.
I’m playing mostly with “Carinosa Peligrosa”. Excuse the lack of the ñ; Eve-Online doesn’t support it. I’m not new enough to need a present – I do well. I’m about three months into the game. I spent the first month with another character whilst figuring out what I was doing.
Other newbies: I’m a member of Eve University. Come by Korsiki (The Forge) if you want to apply, and feel free to use me as a reference. It got me off to a great start.
Hmm level 4 missions are hard, even with a bigger set up. Just tried suggler intercept level 4, and end up fighting 5 BS, 12 Cruisers and whatever frigates at once in the first room. Had to jump out 6 times, and that was just the first room  The second looks twice at bad, I guess I’m only a level 3 guy yet hehe.
I guess the tier II drones aren’t that good for me yet. Yeah they kill a frig in about 1 second when I tell them too, but at 750K, it’s too expensive with that many ships around. I’m gonna go back to the tier 1 and suffer through them taking 5 seconds per frig.
yep diffinetly not ready for level4 tried the second room, and I’m not even close to being ready to take 8 battleships and 20 cruisers. almost killed 1 and got 8 million in repairs
p.s Im not so stupid I’m gonna pay the 8 million, just checked the price for comparison, Ill let a hull repairer do it.
My character is named Lokiathar. Carebear mission runner/miner/industrialist/researcher. IOW, the proverbial jack-of-all-trades, working on training up the scanner/exploration skills right now.
The faction warfare sounds kind of interesting, but my manufacturing/research is done in Gallente space and my selling/mining is in Caldari. So I really don’t want to piss off either race.
If I had the money, I would probably start a second account and give the factional stuff a try. Although I would need to be sure and get a Drake to fly no matter what faction I was in. I really like them.
If you’re really good at making money, the isk price of GTC’s seems to be coming down a lot recently. I’m not good enough to do that myself yet, but I foresee a day where I’ll play without paying actual money.
Controlling aggro in missions is critical. There are a few sites that will tell you what causes aggro in which missions (as well as damage dealt and so on).
Even with great skills and a pimp ship there are some missions I dare not gain full aggro (although in some I try to do it on purpose when I know I can tank them all to make them all come to me…easier than driving around and easier when I salvage).
Also remember killing things fast is a form of tanking (less of them to damage you). I always zap the frigs first since they are the web/scram bunch then drop the cruisers. With your Tempest you should have a good range so use it to your advantage and keep that range up. Also, sitting still = more damage to you. Keep moving even if you are slow. It helps mitigate damage to you.
But in the end yeah…as mentioned before just being able to fly a battleship does not mean you are good in it. And frankly on time taken to complete a L4 mission you very well could be more profitable doing L3 (by being able to do them faster). Eventually the L4 are certainly more valuable but only when you can ramble through them with little issue.
Can someone point me to where to go next? I finished all of the missions with the first two agents. Other than slowly leveling up skills and mining, what could I be doing? Are there more agents somewhere, and if so, where can I find them? I’m in the Lonestar area right now, I think Tokanawai or something like that.
I assume you are tlking about the tutorial agents you finished the missions for? If that is the case, you should be able to find level 1 agents around, just poke about in nearby stations and check to see if agents are available to you. If you want to work for a specific corp, check the info on the corp, there will be a list of agents you can use. As you complete missions for agents, your standing with the corp will go up and you will gain access to higher level agents (and higher quality agents of the same level - the higher the quality of an agent is, the higher reward you get for completing missions). Note that there are different types of agents; a security agent will be more likely to give you missions fighting than a manufacturing agent (which would give out a lot of courier type missions).
Hope that helps, assuming I understood the question.
Yeah, that answered it. I explored around the solar system directly outside the “newbie” one and hadn’t found any yet. Just wanted to make sure I was doing it right, which it seems I am.
