Ten years of the Dope: a history

Wasn’t there a thread called “A”? I didn’t participate, but it seemed to go on for miles.

Oh, and there was a bar fight in the Pit. Before my time.

I’ve been known to ask “Where’s your head?”

In its 107-page glory, enjoy a.

I know. I was there. I misinterpreted something you said as being about TWOOMC, not about the early searches. Sorry!

Another one that I like but don’t recall the specifics- there were a series of threads started by Meeker the SDMB Musicals or something like that- there were some GREAT song parodies in there about fellow dopers!

How about Scylla’s Evil Nazi Groundhogs!

I’m pretty sure it’s Scylla’s thread. For some reason, the OP just says “Guest”, with no name. Odd.

Who left his computer on at the office only to have cow-workers type explicit statements about goat love?

The aforementioned (and extremely good sport) Hal Briston. (I think it was mentioned on the first page.) And it was sheep love - how he really, really loved lovin’ him up some sheep.

How I missed The Grapist is beyond me. The troll I recall most is Mark Serlin/RainbowCSR/whatever other sock puppet he had. He was…um…something. Oof, he was so transparent in his attempts to post as a sock into some ridiculous thread he’d started to support himself. He was on AOL, so I actually added him to my Buddy List and just watched him log on as one sock, log off, log on as another immediately after, log off, repeat. One sock after another.

Was he the one who said it was all some grand experiment? HA HA HA joke is all on us?

I’m amazed we’re this far into it and no one has mentioned Who Was Mr. Ruda Duda. Granted, that’s more than 10 years of the Dope history–more like 12–but still. That thing went forever, as did the original MPSIMS thread (“Titanic Wallpaper!”).

I remember the SDMB awards–mainly because Way Back When I was voted poster people most wanted to date. Whoo hoo! (I think Opal was the one people most wanted to meet…I don’t recall who folks wanted to have sex with most was, or many of the other categories.)

Reading these old threads, I’m amazed at how many old familiar names are listed, and now gone. I don’t feel as connected to the SDMB now (not that I was every prolific, note my post count) as then; I swear I recognize more names from then than now. Ah, that’s what life and its busy-ness does.

BTW, I’ve tried to find my old threads when I would post under LauraRae–that was my old screenname at AOL, and what I registered under back in March 1999. I grew bored with it and went with Ruffian nine months later, but I’d think that’d mean my old posts from March-December would be searchable. Alas, they have never shown up.

And hubby and I still quote “Funny things said during sex.” OINK! OINK!

That would be meek. A master of coding as well as a master of musical parody. Unfortunately, the current spoiler tags don’t show off his skill as well as they did when they were black backgrounds, but they’re still fun. Here you go:

SDMB ~ The Epic Musical

SDMB ~ The Epic Musical Sequel

SDMB Epic Musical III ~ This Time It’s Personal

SDMB Epic Musical IV ~ Not Safe for Home Either

A strange parcel arrived last night was posted by Balance some time back when I was a lurker. Is that the one?

“Thread”.

Anyone remember that one? Full of basically generic descriptions of posts.

“Witty rejoinder”
“Scathing rebuttal”
“Grevious insult to one’s mother.”

etc.

Maybe not a classic, but hilarious.

Speaking of the SDMB Musical, there was also one where we re-wrote Genesis according to the Dope.

There was a poster that said he was hearing strange noises outside his door, and said he was going to check it out and would be right back.

Didn’t return for a few weeks if I recall. Caused quite a kerfluffel

Not sure if this is quite as well-remembered as some of these, but does anybody recall Wildest Bill and the thread about his Miracle Mexican Fat Burners?

Without Wildest Bill, we wouldn’t have “gotcha ya”.

I remember that…I think he got banned for that little stunt.

That was SqrlCub. That was a mess and not really worth posting a link to.
But, here’s Thread.
