Here’s my understanding of how it works.
If you hit the reply button in somebody’s post, it will open an empty window for you to write your response in. The resulting post will have a link back to the post you are responding to.
If you highlight the text in somebody’s post and then hit the reply button in their post, it will open an response window which will have their quoted post in it. (This is what I did here.)
If you hit the reply button in somebody’s post, it will open an empty window for you to write your response in. If you then hit the quote button at the left end above the window, it will create a quote just like above.
If you hit the reply button at the bottom of the page, it will open an empty window for you to write your post in. But this post will not have any links to other posts.
