If I edit the post, I don’t see anything which indicates that I’ve done so, not even to me (or to other people, if I log out).

I’m not sure. An orange pencil may show up when you quote the entire post above yours and the system automatically removes the quote (since it is obvious what you reply to). Or something like that.
