test thread for working out how multiple quotes works

Mods, as the title says, I am not really saying anything, just doing a “practice thread” to experiment and verify a little bit of research on how multiple quoting works

so please pardon the multiple empty posts in this thread, huh, somehow, I’ve heard of the 60 second rule, but it never really stuck well in the front of my mind when posting, interesting
I wonder if its been 25 seconds yet, shoot wish I’d watched the clock, sorta.

ok I think its been long enough, lets try

well cool, so far so good, lets see what this looks like in preview.

Looks awesome, just like it should look and just like I’ve seen in other actual threads.

Always wondered how it was done, and sometimes it would have come in handy.

Hey Yall (Admin and Mods that is) why isn’t there a technical bullet in the FAQ for multiple quotes. I mean, yeah I figured it out so it can’t be difficult for anyone but the slowest of the slow learners, but still, seems like that would be one of the things in there. To me anyway.

I thought this thread was going to be about nested quotes

There’s something about multiple quotes.

I’ve never been able to get it to work on my mochine – although I have another machine right next to this one that I use occasionally, where it does work. It must require some browser behavior that my browser (an ancient version of Firefox) doesn’t have.

When I need to do multiple quotes, I have to do it the hard way – quote each post individually and cut-and-paste them all into one editor window.

I often wind up doing that anyways, as I’ve already written the response before I realize I need to double quote–whether to reply to two different people, or because one quote doesn’t provide enough context.

how did you do that?

as I just did here:smack:

You have to do it manually. We had automatic nested quotes for a while, but, boy!, was it a mess. The quotes would get seven or ten deep, people would try to strip out the irrelevant parts and wind up attributing things to posters that had been banned for ten years, and there was much lamenting.

Good times.

For any non-trivial post involving any non-trivial combination of quotes, spoiler boxes, or other fancy stuff, I usually open a plain-text editor and do all the composition there. On my Linux machine, that is usually gedit.
