I’m really Arcite, but the board says I’m logged in as GoHeels. What the heck is going on? Let’s see who it shows as the author of this post.

This is really weird. I just made the post above. Then I closed my browser, re-opened it, and it says I’m Arcite again.

Weird. Does one of your family members of workmates use your computer? (I know it’s unlikely but someone might as well ask)

Arcite’s just found out that his multiple personalities have gotten their own screeen name.

No, the computer(s) I log in from are used only by me. I did think of the possibility, though, that GoHeels works for the same company I work for, and if we both log in from work, we’re going through the same proxy server? I thought the board identified people with cookies. Proxy servers don’t have any effect on them, do they?

Your proxy is probably caching the pages, and feeding you pages meant for GoHeels. You aren’t actually logged in as him, but you are seeing his pages.

Also, I believe there is a setting in VB to set the headers to no-caching.

Well, is Arcite’s proxy caching my pages? 'Cause I see GpHeels too.

You see yourself logged in as GoHeels? That’s the problem Arcite is having.

But the first post is indeed authored by GoHeels, which is what BigGirl was saying.

Is your computer an NT Workstation, by any chance?

No, it’s XP.

And even if the proxy were sending me pages meant for GoHeels, the board shouldn’t allow me to post as him, correct?

Yes, it’s possible the board would let you post as him, as evidenced above.

The best thing to do right now would be for both of you to make sure that you are set to use cookies. Go to your User CP at the top of the page, and pick the Edit Options link.

Set Automatically login when you return to the site? (uses cookies) and Browse board with cookies? to YES for both of you. That may solve the problem.

XP/NT - could amount to the same hill of beans (or a similar-sized hill of similar beans).

NT (and possibly XP, for all I know), when it is networked in an NT domain, stores some of the user’s files on the server so that when you log in as yourself on someone else’s machine, you still get your own desktop, files, etc.

I’m not sure if your cookies are also subject to this, but if they are, then it could be that:
GoHeels logged in (to NT) as you, then accessed the SDMB, causing a cookie with his/her login info to be stored in your cookie jar.
You logged in (to NT)as yourself on GoHeels machine sometime, then forgot to log out and he/she accessed the SDMB later that day.

Or something like that

Or something else entirely.

I have had cookies on the whole time. And my cookies are stored on my C drive.

Do you see a session hash in the address bar? Something like “S=75984735984789574893578943798”?

** Arcite ** - Like you say, GoHeels is proabably someone at your work.
I notice neither of you has a visible email address.
Perhaps if you ask a mod they can send a message for you to GoHeels telling your email and mentioning this thread.

This is the real GoHeels

This is the fake GoHeels

This reminds me of the days when I’d go to the board, and I’d be logged in as ResIpsaLoquitor, WhiteLightning, Silver Fire, or JayLa. (or some other random poster who I may or may not have heard of before)

When I’d post, things would be fine. As far as I know, neither of those people has a post that is in reality authored by me. Also as far as I know, I’ve never had a post that was in reality authored by a person other than me. (except for those two posts last Friday by my brother)
