I’ve been using Windows since it first came out and have gone through most all of its iterations, good and bad (Vista, anybody?). Generally, it’s been a functional and reliable OS. But this latest transition from 8-8.1-10 has not been pleasant. If you read the initial post, I related the fucking disaster that happened the first time I tried to update to 8.1 (so much for keeping the system “stable”), which is why I was annoyed that MS decided to automatically “upgrade” my computer without my say-so. Luckily, my laptop didn’t crash again in the process, as I really didn’t want to have to fork out $800-$1500 for a new laptop, nor do I wish to have to learn the quirks of W-10 (although I know that’s coming at some point).
I don’t need MS “minimizing (my) risk”. I manage my risk very well, thank you. But if I choose to be reckless with my computer’s health, it certainly doesn’t affect you or anyone else.
Frankly I am mildly irritated by the enforced updates too. I didn’t want to go to Windows 10 but then one morning I had it. Windows 10 improves the start menu by integrating the tabletisized part of Windows (since 8) into the start menu. It’s just a graphically rich start menu now.
Look up how to stop sharing data with MS and turn off all those options. Turn off the uselessness of Cortana. Now you have an easier to use Windows 8. I am about 75% certain there is an option to make the start menu like Windows 7.
Historically, the huge variety of Windows OSes out there in varying states of update do contribute to malware/virus/hacking issues. The approach MS and Apple take to forcing us into updating is really the only option they have because of the sheer number of uncooperative people out there. It would be nice if we lived in a world where each individual could be trusted to handle their own computer security but we don’t, so these companies act like nannies.
There’s always Linux. I tried Ubuntu for a long time. Maybe because of something I did in my n00bishness it had issues but none of the errors stopped it from running. I just got tired of it after awhile. I didn’t want to spend my time on Linux forums. Plus the office software looks like shit.
Did you read Broomstick’s post? That is weird! And Kiros doesn’t know a single device can do all that shit he is doing. It’s like they live in bunkers.
Are you a complete fucking moron, or do you just play one in the Pit when people say mean things about Microsoft? How in the world is a fucking Xbox One going to play my entire Steam library in three-plus rooms of my house and host all of the media I own? Oh, wait, I have a Windows computer that does that, and my complaint was about the fact that it unilaterally restarts every week or so.
I didn’t read your whole post because it was boring. I tried a couple more times but didn’t get to whatever the hell it is you’re talking about. I guess you had to hide the fact you’re whining about your PC waking from sleep every once in awhile in a cloud of dull fluff. Dull fluff. I had no concept of such a thing until I read your post. So thanks for that.

[li]Still no fix for the damn sound card. It’s been limited to a single usable output jack since the Anniversary Update.[/li][li]What in the hell is up with the randomly disappearing Start menu???[/li][li]Why do I have to keep reminding Windows what icons I want displayed on the taskbar?[/li][li]My Mac, my Ubuntu machine, and my Android phone are all capable of running Solitaire and other games offline. What the hell, Microsoft???[/li][li]There’s absolutely no excuse for having forced updates in the Pro version.[/li][/ul]
I would seriously consider switching over to the Mac if it wasn’t for my Windows-based Quicken files. Incessant pestering is preferable to forced updates…honestly, my Mac offers more reminders for me to connect a backup drive than anything else. I get an OS update popup maybe every month or so? I’ve been pleased with Ubuntu, but since I enjoy playing with it – and since this occasionally results in various problems – I don’t really consider it practical for my everyday use. And again, Ubuntu actually gives me a choice about running updates, whether they’re just standard program updates or OS upgrades.
Go to Mac, don’t look back!. Judging from the issues you describe and how it took me no time at all to find out how to migrate your files, I really think you ought to go over to OS X. You need your hand held.
Remarkably, my current job actually requires me to interact with human beings for most of my 8 hour work day, thus, my home computer does not need to even be switched on, much less surfing the web. What computer work I need to do at work is done on computers provided by the company. When I’m not actually using my computer for anything I *>gasp!< *actually turn it off.
Our other two systems run computer-controlled hardware for my spouse. There is absolutely zero need for any of those systems to be connected to the internet for any reason. We set up stable systems, do regular maintenance/diagnostics, and replace components if needed but not needing internet connections on those devices actually makes things much, much easier and eliminates problems like viruses. It doesn’t matter that Microsoft is no longer supporting one of the operating systems because the “security vulnerabilities” simply aren’t an issue for a computer than never talks to any other device or network.
Any internet-based stuff for the home business is done on the internet-enabled computer.
I know it makes fanboys such as yourself cringe, but in fact not everyone needs to be connected 24/7.
This will probably blow your mind, but I don’t have a smartphone, either. And I’m fine with that. Of course, if I have a need for one I’ll get one but too many people don’t understand the difference between “want” and “need”.
You know, I got along just fine when DOS was a new thing - I don’t need a “graphically rich” start menu. Between being colorblind and the normal deterioration of age I’m really looking for something simpler. The heavy graphics shit is hell on those of us with less than perfect vision. It’s less useful, not more.
Screw them. People learn to brush their teeth and wipe their asses after they shit, they can learn how to roll a metaphorical condom over their internet link. You know, I’ve encountered so many people with your attitude lately I’m beginning to think at least some of them are paid shills for Microsoft. Almost word-for-word the same arguments.
Remarkably enough, I recall a time before we all had computers in our homes and offices. We got stuff done back then, too. I don’t mind some of the new automation, but I don’t need most of it.
Nagging is all that Windows 7 used to do. The problem people have with Windows 10 is that it doesn’t just nag–it restarts your computer and installs the updates.
Also, when you do a big version upgrade on your Mac, does it undo a lot of your changes? Because that’s what happens on Windows 10. My DPI was reset. Software gets uninstalled. Drivers that work get “upgraded” to ones that don’t. It always took a couple hours for the update, and then a couple hours to put everything back the way I had it.
I’ll admit updating my Linux machine requires me to restart, but everything is exactly where it was before. And I do it when I feel like it, and it’s rather rare. My current uptime is 48 days, and no updates in sight.
I’ll get behind people not installing updates when they become liable if their computer gets used in a bot attack. Seriously, it’s like getting a recall report because your car has bad brakes and being like, “Nah, I’m good.”
The most recent bot attack involved things like baby monitors, not laptops or tablets. How about we make people liable for ANY device used in a bot attack?
Or maybe we should go after the real criminals - the ones hijacking electronics and hold them responsible.
No this is incorrect. This is part of what MS is doing, and there was a lot of trust in them for this reason. But MS has trashed that trust. They began to include things in updates that were more about reconfiguring software to suit them. Most recently they were deliberately misleading about updates in order to force people to go to 10, which is less stable than 7, at least as an initial proposition. It’s reached the point where you have to ignore the brief update title and dig into the detail to find out what an update actually does because MS has stopped even pretending to be honest. I had a look through offered updates recently and there was something with a title that implied it was necessary for security reasons but when I read the detail it was actually an update to cause information to be sent back to MS about your system’s readiness to upgrade to 10.
There, there. I actually used to be a Microsoft apologist too. Given your ability to use a search engine, I’m confident no one will need to hold your hand when you decide to give some flavor of Linux a try. (^_^)
I have zero problems with Windows 10 (though I do think 7 was superior)… but the Xbox One was the biggest mistake I’ve ever made. A gaming console that was geared more toward multimedia, yet manages to fuck up both of those aspects regularly! I can only watch Blu rays or DVDs about 10% of the time, due to some quirk in the software. And I keep it up to date, it just doesn’t work worth a shit.
At home only my GFs laptop has Windows 10, it “upgraded” itself some months ago.
I found out what she thought of it when I had to reinstall the printer after it stopped working, when I asked her log in password at first I thought that the string of four letter words directed at Microsoft was her just venting and not the actual password; considering that she never swears that was very telling.
It didn’t because I already knew you don’t own a smartphone. What’s it like typing a text? Let me guess: 5-5-5, 8-8,3,3,4-4-4,8,3-3!
That’s disappointing there are on better options for colorblindness. High constrast doesn’t help?
I’m a paid shill for realism. I admire your trust in people. In the world I live in people open every attachment that comes in their email or click on links and happily fill in their personal information. This is why MS and Apple force these updates on you: for security. The Linux people don’t have to because nobody uses Linux so Russian hackers don’t bother with it.
Oh god now you are going to say something about how great it was when computers used punch cards.
Oh c’mon, yes the last update reset Cortana but you are exaggerating.
Yes, you’re drivers on the Linux are some generic most basic version that always work because they are the same legacy drivers used by every piece of hardware.
Did you read it? Dullsville! Wah! My computer restarted! I think I will write a novel before getting to the point!
See? the baby monitors didn’t have windows on them. And you offered up the least efficient approach to solving security problems, but that’s unsurprising since you love your abacus and typewriter.
So they want people to upgrade to 10 because it’s a huge pain in the ass for companies to support legacy software. I mean there really is no bigger pain in the ass for a software company than supporting every fucking configuration possible. Their forcing these updates on you IS for stability and security. Their wanting to know system configuration information is to maximize the likelihood the way you’ve abused your pc doesn’t cause problems when they update.
I did, it was fine. I stopped. I’m an adult now and there is no appeal for me to spend my afternoon looking up errors on some Linux forum.
You should have bought a playstation 4. It’s tremendous. Believe me.
It’s not MS, it’s the manufacture of your printer. They didn’t adequately test their drivers. Whine at them.
A lathe and two routers. Although the routers can also be converted to drawing pictures by swapping a pen for the bit, and a few other tricks.
My phone does not connect to the internet therefore texting is a non-issue. Oddly enough, I use my phone as an actual phone.
No. Not usually.
Upping the contrast on two hues of equal saturation when my retina can’t distinguish the two different colors is zero help.
The truth is that most web and interface designers give jackshit consideration to those with vision that is different from the norm in any way. On average computers are becoming less useful for that category of people rather than more.
So you work in customer service, then? A help line, perhaps?
No, they do it to protect their own asses from lawsuits from idiots and to cut their own costs regarding legacy software. They don’t actually give a fuck about you once you hand over your money.
Nope, that sort of sucked. Ditto for reel-to-reel and cassette tape data storage. Like I said, I remember when DOS was a new thing and that was an actual improvement, as were floppy disks and internal hard drives.
I also like my sliderule.
Except they don’t - Windows 98, for example, is pretty much left to twist in the wind these days, as is anything earlier. Which is why we don’t connect anything with an operating system older than Win 7.xx to the internet.
Except it doesn’t stop at your system configuration - they want to track your every move on the internet for their own reason, mostly with an eye to increasing their profits whether or not it fucks over the end user. Also, to sell as much data as possible to third parties to, again, maximize their profits. All that nice, juicy data then becomes a target for hackers. Round and round.
