I began to lurk on the SDMB sometime about October or November of 2001. I signed up in July of 2002 in order to make my first post: a hearty agreement with those blasting the handling of the 2002 baseball All-Star Game. This is my last post.
In between that post and this post, I’ve had some good times, some good arguments, some good socialization, and also some bad of all the preceding. I’ve spent most of my time in the Pit and GD, with occasional excursions elsewhere, and it’s always been good - something I felt was worthwhile. While I’ve never pretended to be Mr. Nice Guy, I’d like to hope that I’ve been perceived as Mr. Reasonable Guy.
I spent some years as a mod in IMHO, another experience with both good will and good ill involved. I appreciate it, both for what I was able to do for the board, and for what the board felt I was able to do.
I’ve very much enjoyed my time here. I think it should be apparent that someone who has read this board almost every day for eight years and posted on this board almost every day for seven years does, in fact, enjoy being here.
For some months, I have been balancing two things: 1st) my absolute enjoyment of being a reader and poster on the board, and 2nd) my absolute annoyance that the board performance is worse, by far, than it has ever been. For some months, I have spent over half my time on the SDMB clicking and reclicking and reclicking to read - the board, a forum, or a post; losing replies and new posts and losing new threads; losing searches. I’m no longer interested in the latter.
I’d like to encourage you to check back here every few months. It might take a miracle to get this place running like a normal message board, but stranger things have happened.
Noooooo! I named my firstborn son after you!
Well, not really after you specifically, but we did name him Frank. And I’ve always admired you here as a poster.
Frank, I’m pretty new and I don’t know shit from shinola, but I really enjoy this cyberspot, even if as you describe, it is a very frustrating messageboard due to seemingly easily resolved technical issues that site admin cannot seem to rectify.
I’ve enjoyed reading some of your stuff since I’ve been around lo these hoary couple of years, and I can’t understand why you feel you need to stop posting/visiting.
There’s simply too much entertainment value/knowledge/good debating 'round these parts to let it go. I share your frustration in the board’s performance, but I really wonder why you would suddenly just up and leave after so many years.
But to each his own. Here’s to hoping you change your mind.
You’ve been a part of the place for so long, I’m so used to seeing your name about the place. We haven’t interacted much, but I always found you to be reasonable as a moderator.
I totally get where you’re coming from. The poor performance is exceedingly vexing. Worse yet, there is no longer any illusion that anyone’s hearing the complaints or acting on them. And, in fact, there is no point complaining to anyone if you’re not going to believe what they tell you in response. It just all sounds/smells like they’re always shining us on. It only leads to more frustration, why bother!
I wish you happy trails, my friend, maybe we’ll see around the intrawebs sometime!
I don’t think it will. I think they honestly think they are doing the best they can.
Plus, it seems a lot of people experience far worse performance than others. Or are far more bothered by a five minute outage once a month. (At least, that’s what I get.)
