That Sinking Feeling - "Catwomen"... *spoilers obviously*

I did a search and couldn’t find any previous topic about the movie, so here I go…

Has anybody seen the stuff for the upcoming Halle Berry Movie “Catwomen”? When I first heard that Halle had been cast in the movie, I thought it was great. Personally I think that Halle has that “meow” factor that made past Catwomens like Michelle Pfiffer, Eartha Kitt and Julie Newmar wonderful (and the lack of “meow” factor making Lee Merriweather… and dare I say Sean Young… kidding  just bad)

But everything I have heard since then has really lowered my level of my interest and raised my level of disgust.

First of all kicking the mythos of Selena Kyle out of the door and creating an entire new character of Patience Philips. I understand that Warner Brothers didn’t want to use the Selena Kyle character in this movie cause they want to save her for the new Batman project they got on their plate, but still… if it isn’t Selina Kyle, it isn’t Catwomen.

(slightly off-topic for a second, is it just me, or is Selina Kyle the most tragic character in the comic book industry, she always gets killed, jailed, killed, left carrying the baby, she never gets an easy break)

Then there was the first photos of the costume… I remember everybody I tooked to thought it was a joke… a bad photoshopping venture by some crazed fanboy (like the Demonter picture that was floating around last summer). Sad thing in the end the photos turned out to be real. Making the sleek and regal Catwomen look like some hooker with a mask.

Then there was the Entertainment Weekly article from a few weeks ago. I cannot imagine a article that seem to piss me off. (I cannot seem to find the online version, though I have my magazine copy in front of me).

The director (whos biggest credit was a supervisor for “Alien Resurrection” (yeah, great movie, not), seems to be more interested in making a girl-fight movie then a true Catowomen movie.

Seriously, even with my ranting, I will give the movie a chance, but I really don’t have much hope for it. sigh

Well, in some versions of her story Catwoman is “some hooker in a mask”, but yes, that’s an ass-ugly costume.

The movie seems so divergent from the source material thatyou have to wonder why they even bothered to get the rights (see also Starship Troopers, LXG ! Change her name, and I’d have never guessed it was supposed to be Catwoman.

Do you mean these photos?

If so, then I agree. Yuck.

Is this “Catwoman” at all related to the DC Comics’ Catwoman? Nothing I’ve seen, other than the name, relates at all to the Catwoman I know from the comics. Batman isn’t even in the film at all?

This just looks dumb.

To the best of my knowledge Batman doesn’t even exist in this universe.

I have to agree with the other poster. If you are going to change the source material THAT much, why bother buying the rights and instead just make a cheap original knock-off.

Do what i plan on doing: Don’t see the movie!

I also give this advice for the upcoming zombie abortion that will be Superman.

Why is it that Marvel can put out movie after fantastic movie and DC can only put out these nightmares?

Now I’m flashing back to the early 1990s when the Batman franchise was hot while Marvel was churning out straight-to-video dreck like Captain America and The Punisher. Everything comes and goes in cycles. If Marvel churns out a few more Daredevil-type movies, the pendulum will probably start to swing the other way again.

As for this, and the question about acquiring the rights, the simple fact is, Warner Brothers owns the rights to all DC Comics characters. (There may be a few exceptions, but they are exceptions.) Warner Brothers owns DC Comics.

Marvel Comics on the other hand, are not a subsidiary of a larger corporation. After all the crappy earlier adaptions of their properties, Marvel decided to wait for the movie rights to their properties to expire. Then, they created their own studio, so that they have full control over their characters.

Basically, the DC characters are being brought to the big screen (and the small screen) by a movie studio, while Marvel characters are being brought to the big screen by a comic company.

It’s all about respect and understanding for the characters and the stories…

Frankly, if the film was directed by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay written by Shakespeare, I’d still have a hard time getting over that damned ugly costume.

But hey, maybe it’ll look better on film, like the Nightcrawler makeup in X2.

Maybe.

Well, at least it’s not spandex.
BTW…"Zombie abortion, "Tars? I think that’s my favorite term of the year, so far!

I loved DAREDEVIL! And it didn’t do badly at the big screen, either.

I liked it until the moment that DAREDEVIL freakin’ KILLED a guy.

And I absolutely REFUSE to put that in a spoiler box. If my spoiling comment has prevented even ONE person from seeing this movie, I’ll feel justified in my work.

Basically, Daredevil as a character has only four things about him you can’t make changes to. They are:

  1. He’s blind
  2. He’s a lawyer
  3. He dresses up as a superhero in either a red or yellow suit
  4. He does not kill people; rather he brings them to justice, because he believes in the judicial system.

Y’know? Like, I don’t know, a motherfarkin’ LAWYER might?!?

Not to mention killing that guy didn’t further the plot ONE IOTA.

What “Superman” movie would this be? I thought the Nick Cage movie was long dead.

I had to go to imdb to confirm this, but it looks like McG is going to be the director for the new Superman movie.

Yeah, the costume is terrifying… and so is pretty much everything else I’ve heard about this film. It’s starting to look very much like a train wreck in the making.

The fan press and the Internet Geek Squad are already sharpening their claws to flay this one to bits as soon as it hits the theatres.

Me? I’m gonna wait. If even half my regular, trusted sources say, “Hey, this movie isn’t bad at all,” or even “this movie is so bad, it’s good,” I’ll likely go see it. My kid’s a big Catwoman fan.

But I’m not counting on it. I expect it will be violently excoriated by every critic there is, vanish without a trace, and end up in the $5 DVD bin at Wal-Mart in six months or so…

^A quick death to Wal-Mart Bargin Bin Hell is the only way this movie might actually succeed (so bad it’s good in a culty stort of way)

You know. If it was just “Charlies Angels” I would say yeah, but he had to go and spoil it all by making “Charlies Angels 2”. But the second one failed do to the studio allowing him to do anything.

Plus I know have this image of Drew Barrymore as Lois Lane in my head, and I am going to allow that sweet image to last for a few more hours. hehehe… (though even though she might be a little to old, I think the perfect Lois Lane would’ve been Sela Ward from “Once and Again”/“Sisters” fame).

okay that is my fault for typing to early in the morning… way to many grammar and spelling errors… :-p

…“culty sort of way” not “stort”…

…“the second one failed due to the” not “do to the”…

…“Plus I now…” not “Plus I know”…

I feel so embarrassed… hehehe… WAY to early in the morning for me…
