That song you love - you put it on and everyone goes WTF!!!!

Theme from ‘Ice Castles’

Okay, here’s my foreign offering (unless you’re Turkish), Dostum, Dostum, from the 70s.

Okay. I’m bookmarking this thread. You guys would have been great with us on college radio during the early to mid eighties, when we tried our best to make the station sound like CFNY.

One of my favourites: Reparata, found as described in this thread.

How great it is? Very.

How about Rachid Taha? Hilarious vid, too.

As a bonus I’m adding the original version, which falls into the category of TTFU*, which is a shame as really like the Brel-ish vocal.

*Tune the Fuck Up

I bumped the other music thread from a month ago that I really liked, so I figured why not bump this awesome music thread too.

“Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” by the Flaming Lips. I can’t explain why, but I always thought this song sounded pink.

And here’s something completely different. “Paddy’s Lamentation,” from the Gangs of New York soundtrack. Damn warmongering Lincoln.

Theme from ‘Ice Castles’

Sleepers Awake,

…and Koeeoaddi There, of course.

The only song I’ve gotten shit for is Whitesnake’s Is This Love?, but I don’t care. I fucking love that song, and not “ironically,” but sincerely, and I don’t care who knows it.

I have hundreds of popular tunes from the 1920s-1940s, old prison hollers and cowboy songs collected by Alan Lomax, medieval ballads and folksongs, the entire Beastie Boys discography, homemade recordings of people reading bad short stories out loud, children’s songs sung by Weird Al and Kate Winslet in a duet, WHAM!'s “Last Christmas”, you get the idea…and nobody bats an eye. But Whitesnake comes on and that somehow is going too far. t:mad:

I don’t know how many of you are familiar with the Katamari Damacy video game series. I’m a big fan of the soundtracks from the games, which feature a potpourri of songs performed by various Japanese acid-heads and extraterrestrials. They’re some of the craziest, catchiest, happiest songs I’ve ever heard. Here’s a sampling:

Katamari on the Rocks

Katamari Mambo

Baby Universe

…and if you think those songs are insane, you ought to play the games.

ROYAL RAINBOW!!!

There’s a new song by the band IAMX called Bernadette that I think is pretty awesome, but I can imagine most people not finding the appeal.

I kinda love that. That’s a theremin, isn’t it?

I love the music from these games! We got so hooked on the songs that we would randomly start singing them in the grocery store. We finally just went ahead and got the first soundtrack. I’m not much of a gamer but all of my friends are. This is the only game I can kick ass at.

I have a deep and abiding fascination with Yehoram Gaon’s Ladino recordings, which is kind of weird for an Ashkenazi boy like me.

El Rey Nimrod
Un Kavretiko
Avre tu Puerta

I like screamer songs, where one part of the song you can scream as loud as possible while karaoke’ing (with bonus trivia quiz! I give the song lyric, you guess the song! No fair googling!):

  1. “NOW I’M JACKING OFF”
  2. “OHUUUUUAAAGH AAAAAAAGH AAAAAA WAAAAAAAA”
  3. “SHE LICKED MY ASS”

Any interest in more modern Ladino stuff like Yasmin Levy - rather wonderful IMO.

Very nice, although she lacks Gaon’s perfect diction - I don’t speak Ladino, but listening to him, I feel I could transcribe the entire song without a single error.

Count me as another who doesn’t understand why anyone would dislike Rasputina.

I tried to play Joanna Newsom’s first cd at the bar I worked at once–it did not last long.

Another acquired taste: Kirsten Hearsh’s solo albums (especially the one with all the Appalachian folk songs about murder) and Throwing Muses (especially ‘In A Doghouse’).

Anything by Gentle Giant.

You’d think I’d just put Wilson Phillips on or something.
