That's how I got fat the first time.

This is a truly mundane and pointless post.

However, here I am at work. I’ve had my FiberOne bar and coffee and, even though I just ate two hours ago, I find myself snuffling around my cube, thinking, “Nuts. I know I have to have a cookie or something sweet around here somewhere.” Then the epiphany came. That’s exactly what got me 25 pounds heavier and 70 cholesterol points higher than I am now. Snuffling around for snacks when I didn’t really need the food.

So I stopped looking (I don’t have any anyway, but that’s not the point), popped in a piece of gum and started typing. I still can’t get my mind off the absence of cookies, but at least I managed to refrain from eating any.

I had planned to lose another 20 pounds anyway, but recently got back into my old mindset: Oh, tomorrow I’ll do better. But I’ve screwed up today anyway. Bring on the pad thai! sigh Back to Weight Watchers for me.

Ok this isn’t another thread where I offer to send the OP a package with Irish chocolate in it. Well done on losing the weight so far, it’s a struggle but hope you get to your target.

Did someone say Irish chocolate? I don’t mind working out once or twice a week more to drop Irish chocolate weight.

As to the OP – good on you for resistance! It is tough, I find myself going through that sometimes, too, and just have to remember that I didn’t get where I am now by eating when not hungry.

Right before I opened this, I had my Fiber One bar too! I am in WW and certainly do find myself thinking about alleviating the boredom with a small treat.

Hang in there! If you can’t stand it, have just a bite and move on. Complete depravation leads to overdoing it later, at least for me.

I’m right there with you. I eat when I’m bored and I eat socially - both bad things for keeping me fat.

Now that I am at home all day, I eat much less socially and am doing better about eating good things when I’m bored. It has been months since I last had sweets.

(Too bad Thanksgiving and my birthday are coming up!)

Yeah, I find keeping something healthy and low-cal around to feed the snacking demon is very useful. Sugarless gum, celery sticks, baby carrots, baby zucchinis (these are surprisingly good), tangerines and V8 are useful to dampen down the appetite to a manageable level. I lost 40 pounds using tactics like this.

And here’s how my sisters-in-law and I pack on some poundage during the holidays.

Step 1: Oh, I just ate a cookie/piece of pie/piece of cake.
Step 2: Now, I need to eat something salty to get rid of the sweet. Oh, I just ate more potatoes/chips/cheese and crackers/stuffing.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you’re miserable!

Actually, I’ve finally gotten out of the habit, but it’s still amusing/painful to watch it happen every year, at every holiday meal.

I had the Fiber One bars, and liked them, but they made me crave junk food, so I stopped buying them.

My mom calls that “cutting the sweet”.

“Mmm, isn’t this cake good? Somebody grab the Lay’s so we can cut the sweet.”

You can eat waaaay more cake when you cut the sweet.

I eat FiberOne bars because they have so freaking much fiber and fill me up like no one’s business. The downside is that I feel like the goodyear blimp by afternoon because I also try to eat veggies and fruits during lunch - fiber overload!

I’m already getting leery of the holidays - too much food just sitting out, waiting to be eaten. (Too many sweets to be cut, too much salty with which to cut the sweet. ) I guess that’s when I should start wandering around with a huge glass of water or just spend the time chasing my toddler.

I wish I didn’t live a life in which FiberOne bars were the junk food. I wish that I had put on the weight I have because of eating when not hungry. Dammit… I get hungry.

Thanks guys - I’ll try the fiber one bars. I’m gaining and I can’t get out of this rut - I’ll get some on my break,

I do get hungry about every 2 hours, so I just plan a healthy meal/snack every 2 hours. I eat a lot, but I lost 70 lbs 4 years ago and I’m pretty happy with my current lifestyle.

I tend to avoid energy/snack bars as a snack (although I confess to never having tried a Fiber 1 bar since I hated Fiber 1 cereal) because “carby” foods tend to trigger a weird bingy hunger in me. I usually eat fruit or non fat greek yogurt (or a combination), string cheese, cut up veggies, or hummus.
