That's it! I'm going to be a well adjusted homo just to piss you people off!

I believe andy is refering to the episode of Northern Exposure that told the story of the founding of Cicely. Roselyn and Cicely venture to an unnamed Alaskan town in frontier days and bring culture and civility to it. When the local outlaw returns, Cicely climbs from her death bed to inspire the townspeople to fight back. Then she dies and Roselyn names the town after her.

I don’t think the story is particularly hostile to homosexuals. It is certainly tragic, but it doesn’t completely fit the pattern. The femme is the one who meets a tragic end and she never “returns” to heterosexuality. It wasn’t like lesbianism was her downfall, she was ill when the story began and was the reason they came to Alaska in the first place.

Ah ha! So that’s it! I would still be married if it weren’t for you homersexyuls.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Honestly, though, I don’t get it. What’s the big deal about “defending marriage?” Hell, heterosexuals aren’t defending it–look at the divorce rate. Maybe homosexuals can make a better go of it.

Geez.

Couldn’t I just be an honorary queer?

I am a member of the Pink Pistols and marched in the Boston Pride parade with them.

Arned.
With supersoakers.

er, armed

Side point:

If I’m recalling correctly, the amendment wouldn’t limit marriage as between a man and a woman. If I’m not mistaken, the amendment means that a state isn’t required to extend marriage to homosexuals. A state COULD limit marriage to heterosexuals without being considered in violation of the Constitution, but the amendment wouldn’t prohibit it from opening it to everyone either.

It’s basically a pre-emptive strike against the Supreme Court, if I’m reading it right.

Oh, and…I’m sorry to hear that andygirl’s so upset. Hang in there, baby.

Calming down now. Clearly I need more herbal tea in my life.

Gobear- I thank my editor on a daily basis. He caught it. I personally refuse to admit that Go Fish even is in existence, but hey. You’re right, not all of it is pain and suffering. But there’s enough of it there that it’s not a coincidence.

Just watched the season finale of Buffy- Willow was saved from her torment by the straight guy. If they make them a couple I will have a bitty Andy meltdown.

Okay, so I am bitter about willow/tara because they killed of tara (Irredeemable) after she and Willow had lots of sex (very bad thing) which caused Willow to go off the deep end. It just fit the cliche so well that it was ridiculous.

I know that the amendment won’t pass, but it doesn’t need to. Enough states have DOMA laws in effect already that it isn’t necessary. And it’s just another of a long series of slaps in the face.

Guin- perhaps the cult shall live again.

24 had a lesbian killed off in one of the early episodes. I’ll have to dig up the details. Northern Exposure I don’t remember clearly, but I thought that it fit the dead lesbians enough to list it.

I remembered what you were talking about, eventually. That said, they kill off tons of people, so I guess I just didn’t remember it. Hmmmm…

Don’t remember the Northern Exposure one at all…must have missed it. Just curious to see where it entered into two of my favorite shows. Interesting…

I agree with your OP completely andygirl, except for the Buffy part (which was previously brought up). Willow wasn’t saved in the end by the straight guy, she was saved by the guy who’s known her since kindergarten and wants to die by her side. It doesn’t matter what his orientation is, it doesn’t have anything to do with it.

The Willow/Tera romance was a wonderful part of the past few seasons, but they didn’t kill Tera off because she’s gay, that’s just the way all relationships turn out in the Buffyverse. The saddest part is, their relationship was probably the most healthy one ever portrayed on the show, and it’s in the running for the most longstanding. Give them some credit for the good they did by bringing an amazing lesbian relationship to prime time.

I think we’ll see that next season she doesn’t turn from her gayness, they’ve already established her leanings in Tabula Rosa. Everyone lost their memory in that episode, and even with a clean slate, she still had the googly eyes for Tera. And when Oz came back to see her at college, she didn’t run back to the world of boy/girl lovin either.

Andy,

sorry for the hijack, but I when I saw Jody Foster in Panic Room, a big penny dropped and I fully understood the deeper meaning of

“I only make passes at girls that wear glasses”.

I do not, can not and will not understand how two (or more) people loving each other can ever be a bad thing in any way.
I could rant a lot more here, but I think the one sentence sums it up.

Keep fighting the good fight, andy. You’ve got a lot of us straight-but-not-narrows in your corner.

Damn, I was going to post this, but you did already. When the marriage thing came up here in this state I was all for it and a few of my friends, who have more close gay friends than I do ( I have one), were against it. I couldn’t understand it! I cannot understand why it has to be so, there are hetero couples who make a mockery of the institution of marriage. It just fucking pisses me off.

Andygirl, I feel your pain (is that considered “second base?”). According to TV, movies, commercials and books, as a transgendered person, I am one of the two following things:

a) A sad, pathetic and possibly homicidal freak who is bound to die either in a hail of bullets or as a suicide.

b) A human punchline whose very existence is cause for hilarity and merriment (especially if a man “accidentally” dates me).

Hmmm. I guess I gotta get crackin’ on one of those two . . .

I don’t object that they killed Tara. Amber Benson is a great actress, I loved the character, and I’m sorry that they chose to do that, but I can understand why they did it from a storyline perspective.

It’s the way that they did it that leaves me cold. They make up and have sex and then she is killed off immediately leaving her psycho lesbian lover to do damage. That’s the cliche, and there’s so many better ways to have her be killed. And Willow’s reaction? I wanted rage and fury and ass-kicking! She spoke in a monotone and played with CGI!

In thinking about it more, though, I do understand why on some level it had to be Xander. That part was all right. The season in general, though, has degenerated so much from how it used to be. The ratings alone can attest to this.

Marti Noxon has been throwing anvil after anvil at us, and I’m objecting to having my toes crushed.

I want to congratulate you andy on taking this first big step in admitting that IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT. It is the first step to recovery.

matt_mcl said jokingly “Marriage must be a sad, sad little thing if it can only be given value by forbidding it to a portion of the population.” but therein lies the irony. People stay in miserable marriages for any number of reasons except the right one, that is love. A neighbor actually said to me once after relating how hubby had beat her AGAIN, “sure he’s an asshole, he beats me and makes me miserable but at least I ain’t a lesbian” I had no proper reply for that.

I am married, happily so, but I am not strictly heterosexual. (not that it matters, I just want to make it clear where I am coming from)

And Eve, trangendered? Does that mean that you started out with male parts and now you don’t have them? Or you live as a woman with male parts? I had no idea. After reading most of your posts, there is no doubt in my mind that you are a woman and one with a lot more class and grace than I could ever hope to possess.

I don’t know if I want to be “well-adjusted.” I like my neuroses. They’re a part of me.

“If I exorcise my devils, my angels might leave, too.”

My passions are part of who I am. I couldn’t be Will from Will and Grace.

sigh

I’m tired of hearing how positive Will and Grace is. Yeah, Will sends the message it’s okay to be gay, alright. As long as you’re a lawyer living in a large apartment whose only meaningful relationship is with your ex-girlfriend.

Okay. I haven’t seen many episodes. But still. When we say “well-adjusted,” what do we mean well-adjusted to? This world’s got a lot of problems, and I don’t want to just sit by while they get worse.

I think it was George Orwell who said a human being can adjust to anything. Well, this one chooses not to adjust to a world where young people are still tossed out of their homes for being gay, where people still treat gay as a disease.

I plan to be poorly-adjusted.

At least until the world is better adjusted.

Yuck. Television.

I’ve given up now on all TV but animé. At least when homos die in YAOI and Yuri, it’s heroically and for their beloved.

Utena Tenjou will save us. Maybe

(This has been my Least Coherent Post™ yet)

Eve, go for the gusto and do BOTH! Why limit yourself? You are a woman of great resource, and I’d be disappointed if you couldn’t produce a comedic hail of bullets.

The only well-done film on being trans that I’ve ever seen is Different for Girls. Better than chocolate had an MTF as a subplot, which was handled all right. Any other good ones?

Well, Andy, I have found the most grounded and realistic to be, still, Glen or Glenda. I still remember going through surgery, and how scary it was when they led me down into the dungeon and Bela Lugosi waved his hand over me. But—hey!—I got a keen evening gown out of the deal!

Sorry, Eve, but I’ve got you pegged as Mrs. Madrigal from Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City, with a soupçon of Hedwig tossed in.

Bingo! I must agree with gobear.

Don’t get me STARTED on Hedwig. I don’t want to hijack Andy’s thread, anyway—it’s bad enough I’ve already felt her up.
