That's it! I'm going to be a well adjusted homo just to piss you people off!

I found this essay interesting, with its premise that opposition to gay marriage may contribute to weakening all marriage.

Oh, and, re: the OP, I hope you set your standards a little higher than simply aspiring to be as well adjusted as most of the heteros I know.

BAD ENOUGH?

Forget well-adjusted. I could die in blissful peace if you felt me up.

After a reasonable period of time, of course. Wouldn’t want you to be traumatized, oh instable homocidal maniac.

Does anyone know of a way to force Matt and Hamish to double check what name they are logged on under before they hit submit? I keep getting confused (not that that is too difficult to accomplish).

No, you’re not recalling correctly. This would prohibit not only marriage, but also “associated benefits” from being given to gays or other unmarried people.

If it’s meant as a preemptive strike, then why not just make it a preemptive strike?

andygirl, I’m right there witcha. I, too, shall be well-adjusted and happy - and damn the lot of them! {shakes tiny fist}

:smiley: (Or, honoring matt’s tradition, :mad::cool:;):p:eek::confused: )

Take it up with the gay lobby.

Stay outta the gay lobby, dammit! I just had the marble cleaned!

And don’t sit on the couches! They’re genuine Louis XIV…

I always think of Eve as the Audrey Hepburn of the SDMB-nobody-NOBODY has more style, grace or poise than Eve.

Whoa whoa whoa. “Boston Public”? I think they’ve shown really positive examples of homosexuality. Like the character of Jeremy Peters who deals with being bisexual, even responsibly using condoms  (and yes, has many many issues, but which don’t relate to his being bi). Plus the play “Our Town II” which the administration eventually does support despite its overtones. So, say what you like about the media, I just have to support my show.

“I always think of Eve as the Audrey Hepburn of the SDMB”

—Thank you, darling. It’s nice to know that even as I look more and more like Edna Mae Oliver, there’s an Audrey Hepburn inside me fighting to get out (“what, only one?”).

Since I am celibate anyway, is it OK if I’m gay? Heterosexuals are starting to piss me off. I really like Jody Foster, and watched Xena a lot, if that helps. Oh, wait, never mind, no one is gonna buy me as a lesbian, and I look frightful in drag.

I guess I will continue to list my orientation as “retired.”

A few years ago here in Pittsburgh there was a case involving a trans-sexual named Tammy Felbaum (sp?) who was convicted of castrating her husband, a castration which led to his death, and landed her in prison for manslaughter.

Now, I am not attempting to say that all trans-sexual people are insane or have mental problems because I know quite a few well adjusted people who have had sex-reassignments. What I am wondering is if maybe this media attention to such ‘shocking’ and ‘gruesome’ and ‘ratings grabbing’ cases like that of Tammy Felbaum contribute to the perception that TS people are an ‘insane lot’.

That is, does the media attention to negative examples create and prepetuate stereotypes which the media then turns around and reports on as if this is ‘the opinion of the public’ when in fact it was the media that originally started giving people the idea that TS people are mentally ill.

This has really given me no freaking love for the media whatsoever, because I see the scenario as this:

Mentally unstable person undergoes sex reassignment.
Menally unstable person, because of mental instability and not sex reassignment does something psychopathic.
Media finds out, spins the story as ‘Trans-sexual woman slays her husband.’
Media implies that trans-sexual goes hand in hand with insanity.
Uneducated people nod and murmur agreement to what the ‘Talking Heads’ (not the band) told them on the ‘Big Shiny Box.’
Media takes lone example and soaring ratings and continues down path of ‘See, they are all crazy.’
Uneducated lazy people say ‘Yes, must be so, because $Anchor_Person would never lie to us.’
Media reports a few weeks later that ‘prevailing public opinion of trans-sexuals is that they are insane.’
Media rakes in cash while blissfully ignoring the fact that they are not reporting accurate information.
Uneducated lazy people remain blissfully unaware that they’ve been completely duped, or if aware of it, simply don’t care.

And thus, because one mentally unstable person did a horrible act, a bunch of good people have been tarred.

I hope I’m not gonna get rashed too hard for that, but I think it is a huge contributing factor to why there are so many negative stereotypes flying around.

You’ve pretty much got it down, Catsix. A few years ago a transgendered woman was arrested for something-or-other, and NY newswoman Sue Simmons led the news with “A transsexual was arrested today . . .” I call her at the station and she actually picked up her own phone. I asked her if she would have said, “A black was arrested” or “a Jew was arrested.” She—to her credit—said I was absolutely right, apologized and said she would be more careful in the future.

I wish people like Jan Morris would get more attention, and not the Springer nuts or Tammy Felbaum . . . Of course, people just going around leading normal, fulfilling lives is not “news.”

Ah, sensationalism. Remember Andrew Cunanan? I recall an obit that mentioned “the drag queens of florida” dipping their clothing in Versace’s blood after he was killed. That made my head hurt.

I’m glad you got the drift of my post, Eve, because I was afraid it’d come off like I was making an excuse for the hatred that the ignorant and lazy of the population display.

I’m just so sick of this spin spin spin reporting. Why can’t they ever report what’s core?

It’s not central to the murder that Felbaum’s trans-sexual. She’s a person who killed a person. I have to admit to one huge prejudice: I can’t stand the media. I can’t stand that the media does this shit constantly and gets away with it.

Good for you for calling that reporter on being a spin-doctoring insensitive clod.

Funny, I always thought of Eve as the Marie Dressler of the SMDB…

(crouching and waiting for Eve’s reaction before deciding whether to run away)

That’s Marie Dressler from “Dinner at Eight” of course.

As for the str8s who think they know me and my life based on how queers are portrayed at the movies, fuck 'em. I can’t change their minds and it’s not worth my energy to worry about it.

If it were Marie Dressler from Min and Bill, she’d have to slug you.

And if straight people think that TV shows and movies are an accurate guide to human behavior, they got much bigger problems than a touch of homophobia.

I would like to see heroic, decent gay folks protrayed in the media for a change. Yes, Jack form “Will & Grace” is amusing, but he is not representative of the majority of gay men. We don’t all have cabaret acts and we don’t live to shop.

Some gay men are fem, some are not.
Some love cooking and decoration, some love sports and cars, and some love both.
Some gay men are promiscuous crystal meth queens, many others are not.
some gay men are young and handsome, some are slobs, and others are average.

I’ve always thought of Eve as the Eve Arden of the SDMB.

She’s smart, and wonderfully caustic. There are worse fates.

"Funny, I always thought of Eve as the Marie Dressler of the SMDB… "

[glares at Otto through lorgnette] “We must have a nice chat about the Civil War sometime . . . Just you and I . . .”

Eve, you’re a TS?

>>blinks<<

Next thing you’re going to tell me is that Libby Waxman-Gellner isn’t really a woman, right?

Wow, I take a few months off and all the cool stuff comes out! Er . . . no pun intended.
