That's just not fair CK Haven.

Sure–and one of the two is the person originally posting the hijacking material. Why should the onus be on everybody else to ignore that person, rather than on him or her to avoid the derailment in the first place?

For violating the rules of the board. As of yet, the operators of this service have not judged that lib’s ocnduct fits that criteria.

On post cannot derail a thread. If other posters choose to answer lib instead of focusing on other elements then there are several reasonable courses of behavior one might take. Here, I’ll even suggest one that I have seen be successful in the past.
[ul]'Hey, Lib, do you mind taking that point to it’s own thread? I’d really like to focus this discussion on . . . "[/ul]

It isn’t. There is no onus on other people whatsoever.

However, they must specifically choose to both read and respond to any hijack. If other people choose that course, why should that be considered damning to Lib? If you chooose that course, then you look pretty petty asking for him to be banned simply because you cannot control your own behavior.

You’ll note that a lot of the guidelines for posting on the board would be nonissues if the posters would just hold hands, sing kumbaya, and ignore posts they didn’t approve of. After all, I could just ignore spam, I could just ignore misquoting, I could just ignore Handy’s posts on medical issues, et cetera.

True.

Yeah, and another reasonable course of behavior would be to show a bit of decorum and not hijack the thread in the first place. Sure, everybody is going to do the occasional drive-by, but engaging in a consistent, repeated pattern of hijacking is a bit excessive.

my two. (Interesting that he’s got fully 40% of my pittings of board members!)

And trolls are a figment of our imagination.

There is a difference between grinding an axe or two and being a troll. I’ve been away from the boards for a while, but at one time at least public accusations of trolldom were frowned upon. If you think that liberal’s posts are trollish, then report them privately to the mods as is appropriate. If you do not, then the parallel you draw is intentionally dishonest.

What I note is that some posters cannot conceive of gradations of behavior between open hostility and panglossian bliss. I find it immensely ironic that folks with such a limited repertoire of response have chosen to grind this particular axe with liberal.

Oh, fuck-off, you sanctimonious prick! I gave you a straight forward response to what I felt – and feel – was an asinine comment of yours.

If you want to bring Lib into the picture, that’s on you if you think he fits the bill. I wasn’t even thinking of the pin-headed asswipe at the time. Lord knows I can be direct when I want to.

Again, IMNSHO, it’s simply downright stupid to say that: “On(sic) post cannot derail a thread”, because that’s exactly what trolls do!

Not overly so. The inability to exercise self-control is not that uncommon in adults these days.

This is still going on? Holy cow, how much can you talk to a poster about the same damn thing? Apparently for seven pages and counting.

Save your breath (or finger muscles) folks. Either Lib will stop derailing threads or he won’t. Nothing you can say will influence him one way or the other, as he’ll continue to do what he wants. I just wanted to take the administration to task for dancing to Lib’s tune.

Good on you for admonishing all those folks who derailed your thread — which you had intended for the staff — to save their breath (or finger muscles). Maybe they’ll begin to take their own advice.

Sorry Spiritus, Redfury has refuted you with one simple line. You are trying to be so enlightened on this point that you are completely obtuse.

Trolls exist and books need editors. Written arguments can be derailed in a number of ways.

I think somebody needs the hijack cops over here.

I was neither the first to mention capitalists nor the first to mention right-wingers. You can’t have it both ways.

Perhaps you should go say something.

Yes, but you were the first to put the serious focus on both (as opposed to a throwaway line or joke). Do you understand the difference?

In a message board free of coercion, the market would be allowed to decide the difference.

Perhaps it is telling that no one cares.

Certainly. A serious focus allows for a genuine discussion of the issues, whereas a throwaway line is a waste of bandwidth.

Now see this, Lib, is why people are getting so pissed at you. The thread was not INTENDED to be a “genuine discussion of the issues”, at least, not THOSE issues. It was about something else entirely. And so people called you on your shit.

For a more tangible example, I could take your mention of bandwidth above and hijack this thread into a discussion about bandwidth and theft of.

Do you seriously not see WHY this annoys people?
