Fair warning, this thread might contain spoilers. I hope people will put the more blatant ones in spoiler boxes, but there’s no guarantee.
Let’s limit this to movies that came out in theaters, or out on DVD, in 2005. The DVD inclusion is mostly for those of us who never get to see the “limited release” movies until they’re out on DVD a few months later. It doesn’t affect my picks, but it might yours.
I think that the greater discrepancies will likely be between the movies and their 30 second TV teasers (commercial spots), but feel free to include ones who you felt were unlike their longer trailers too.
So what movies were very different from what you expected from their teaser on TV or the trailer you saw in the theater?
My nominees:
Cursed - the tv spot I saw gave every indication that this movie was going to be one of Wes Craven’s typical bloody fares. It wasn’t. I liked it quite a bit more that I imagined that I was going to.
The Skeleton Key - maybe it’s just me, but the tv spots seemed to suggest that this movie was primarily about ghosts plaguing someone. The trailer makes it far more obvious about what the plot is, but I didn’t see it until after I’d seen the movie.
I know there’s at least one more movie that really surprised me, but I can’t think of it now. Perhaps it’ll come to me later.
