The 2009 NFL free agency thread

The Denver Post is reporting:

So it looks like they got 3 picks on day 1 and gave back one pick on day two. That’s a steep price.

It is, but if the Bears pulled the trigger much earlier, the price would have been lower. Cutler’s price was getting driven through the roof, but I still like it. Orton’s limitations are Cutler’s strengths.

Really, if you can get the chance to trade prospects for proven players, I think you’ve got to generally do it.

Yeah, this price seems much higher than it was a month ago. I guess the Broncos were smart to make the trade talk official and get the market revved up.

I’m going to talk myself into this in record time. The Bears absolutely need to get Cutler a target other than Hester. If they are able to land Britt in the second round and put him alongside Hester we’ll at least have that vertical passing game thing going. If they keep signing hand-me-down WRs who lack speed and the ability to get off the bump, Cutler is going to lose his fucking mind.

Wonder if this will lead to more FA signings. Perhaps Torry Holt becomes a likelihood, and maybe they pull the trigger on Pace too now that the draft pick cupboard is bare.

As a Packer fan, this upsets me. I have greatly enjoyed Chicago’s 2 decade experimentation with lepers at QB. In Cutler, the Bears have one of the best young QB’s in the league. There’s still the question of who he’ll throw to, but a gaggle of mediocre receivers is much easier to find than a franchise QB. Steep price, but given Chicago’s nearly supernatural ability to whiff on QB draft picks, this was the best move for them.

I will be very interested to see what the Broncos are able to do with Orton. The guy never had any WR help in Chicago and with McDaniels previous work with Cassel in NE and the WR corps the Broncos have in Marshall, Royal and Stokley he might develop into something pretty good. Orton was very solid last season while never having a WR actually open.

I’m really glad the Bears got that extra 3rd round compensatory pick from the Berrian loss. At least we still have a 2nd and 3rd rounder this season, and maybe we can fill in the defensive holes with a glut of 2nd day selections.

I can’t remember the Bears doing anything that took this kind of stones in my entire lifetime. It’s a new world.

Holy crap! I say it and it happens! The Bears just agreed to terms with Orlando Pace too. There has been debate as to whether they are bringing him in as a LT or a RT, and if they’ll use the last years pick Chris Williams on the other side. Kevin Shafer was also brought in and Omiyale at G, so at the very least the Bears should be able to protect Cutler. You have to assume that this will mean they remove O-Line from their draft board.

So far no talk of Cutler asking for an extension. Hmm, if we get him at his current price for the duration of his contract that’s a bonus.

I think I’m going to throw up. Orton? KYLE FUCKING ORTON! Cutler was the best thing to ever happen to Denver. Even better than St. John of the Elway.

A friend of mine has spent the last week trying to convince me to be a Steelers fan. But I’ve been a Broncos fan for 20 years! Through thick and thin! Good and bad! Super Bowl losses and a few wins!

But fuck it.

GO STEELERS!

Give the guy a chance. He was reliable and he never had a soul to throw to in a pretty uncreative offense. He’s better than Chris Simms I promise you.

I’ll jump ship with ya. I can’t go Steeler bound, as a very messy break up with a psychotic ex who was a Steeler fan has exiled me from that realm but I’ll happily hop to my ‘team on the side’… Da BEARS!!

If we absolutely HAD to lose Cutler, I’m so glad he went there. I’m actually excited, despite knowing, as sure as I knew I should’ve used a rubber with that girl in Thailand, that my Broncos are the new Detroit Lions.

Win some, lose some, but rarely does it happen simultaneously.

You and Cutler can both hang on to most of your Orange and Blue.

There’s some Ewing Theory potential going on over here. The Broncos offense isn’t going to be that bad at all.

I’m shocked. I thought Tampa or Washington and never considered he’d end up in Chicago. If this Broncos-Cutler situation was a movie, it’d be that scene in The Untouchables where Al Capone beats the guy’s head in with the baseball bat. Pat Bowlen is Capone and Cutler is the guy who had the teamwork problem.

So Cutler getting sent to his childhood favorite team in the 3rd largest market in the country and being tabbed as the savior by the fans and having an organization and staff who essentially bet their entire careers on you is the equivalent to having your head beat in?

Where do I sign up?

The cost was pretty high. I don’t know how valuable McDaniels viewed Anderson or Quinn as. I’d have offered their pick of Quinn/Anderson, swap our #5 with their #12 pick this year, and probably some combination of our later 2nd round pick and a later pick. Probably not as appealing as what the Bears offered.

Not sure how interested Mangini was. Does Cutler qualify as a headcase? Mangini seems to be pretty adamant about rooting that stuff out.

Chicago made a good deal. They had a huge glaring need in an otherwise decent team. They gave up a lot, but young quality starters are undervalued in trades and draft picks are overvalued. Cutler will probably mean more to their franchise than the picks they gave away would.

Heh. You’re saying a 2nd and 3rd rounder and the opportunity to move up 7 spots in the first is probably less appealing than two 1st rounders, and a 3rd rounder? Going out on a limb there!

Especially since it’s almost a certainty that Angelo would have fucked up at least one of those first rounders. :smack:

Brilliant move, Burrs.

Plus a better starter then Kyle Orton.

I didn’t say it was equal, just that it was the sort of thing I would’ve been happy with.

Cutler to the Bears.

Well, that is easily the most interesting thing to happen in the NFC North this offseason. Closely followed by them signing Orlando Pace.

It’s always fun to see a team borrow against the future. Personally, I think Pace has maybe a season left in those knees, and trading two firsts and a third round pick, it certainly looks like it’s this year, maybe next year, for the Bears. Personally, I love Pace, but think he’s physically done, and I’ve never been a huge football fan (fantasy football is another story) of Cutler, and his hijinks this offseason soured me even more, so I’m happy the Bears are going for it this year.

It should be a very interesting year.
